Do you love kids? Are you basically fluent in Spanish and English? Castaway Kids is looking for someone who is willing and able to give some love and time, on Thursdays from approximately noon until 3:00pm next school year.
You would be leading and organizing activities for 2 age groups in learning English (with the assistance of 8-10 “seasoned” volunteers!) at the Hogar (children’s home) in Guaymas.
The first class is mostly 4-5 year olds, and the second class is mostly 6-14 year olds. There is another teacher who will lead one of the older classes also, but unfortunately, we are losing our lead teacher (thanks for all you did — you’ll be missed Marg). No teaching experience is necessary. Simple preparations for learning colors, numbers and objects is all that is required, as well as the ability to communicate in Spanish (most of the volunteers do not).
Our season runs from mid-November to around mid-March. This program was started by Kaye Woodcock many years ago; later done in a team teaching approach lead by Terry Challis, and more recently by Marg Marshall, and it is as rewarding for the “teachers” as it is for the kids. We would love to see it continue. These children will melt your heart! This is the program that inspired Castaway Kids’ Adelante Estudiante sponsorship program.
If you, or anyone you know, may be a good candidate for this heartwarming volunteer work, please let Terry Challis know at firstname.lastname@example.org or 226-1235.
