- Look Up This Week: San Carlos’ dark skies get an extra boost this weekend with a new moon on Saturday. The Draconid meteor shower peaks around October 8, while Mars passes through the Beehive star cluster on October 11. Saturn is also especially well positioned for evening viewing this month.
- October 12 is Día de la Raza in Mexico, commemorating the 1492 encounter between Europe and the Americas. It is not an official federal holiday.

San Carlos Weather Outlook for the Week
San Carlos is heading into a hot and sunny start to the week followed by a noticeable cooling trend, with little or no rain currently expected. Daytime highs should reach around 35 – 36°C (95 – 96°F) Wednesday through Friday, gradually falling to about 31°C (88°F) Monday and Tuesday. Overnight lows will generally range from about 28°C (82°F) early in the week to 25°C (77°F) by Tuesday.
Humidity will continue to make the first few afternoons feel considerably hotter than the thermometer indicates. Peak feels-like temperatures could reach approximately 40 – 42°C (104 – 108°F) Wednesday and Thursday, easing to around 38 – 40°C (100 – 104°F) Friday. The combination of lower temperatures and somewhat more comfortable conditions should bring feels-like readings down into roughly the 33 – 38°C (91 – 100°F) range from Saturday through Tuesday.
Current forecasts are predominantly sunny to partly cloudy and dry throughout the seven-day period. Weather Underground shows no measurable rainfall Wednesday through Tuesday, and SailFlow is similarly dry. Some longer-range models have suggested moisture could move north later in the weekend, but that is currently an outlier compared with the more localized San Carlos forecasts.
There is nevertheless a developing tropical system in the Eastern Pacific worth monitoring. The National Hurricane Center gives a disturbance south of Mexico a 90% chance of becoming a tropical depression as it moves west-northwest to northwest. At this point, its expected heavy rainfall is focused on southern and southwestern Mexico, and current San Carlos forecasts continue to show little or no rain through Tuesday.
Winds should remain generally light to moderate. SailFlow forecasts peak winds mostly around 6 – 14 mph (10 – 23 km/h) Wednesday through Sunday, with gusts generally around 9 – 18 mph (14 – 29 km/h). Monday looks lighter, around 5 – 9 mph (8 – 14 km/h). Other current guidance indicates similarly manageable winds Tuesday, completing the Wednesday-through-Tuesday newsletter period.
Seas should also remain fairly calm for much of the week. SailFlow has waves around 1 – 1.6 ft (0.3 – 0.5 m) Wednesday and Thursday, dropping to around 1 ft (0.3 m) Friday before gradually building to 1.5 – 1.7 ft (0.5 m) Saturday and around 2.4 ft (0.7 m) Sunday. Monday is forecast around 2.1 – 2.3 ft (0.6 – 0.7 m), with current marine guidance indicating similar or easing conditions Tuesday.

9th Festival Tránsito en el Mar — through October 11
Guaymas’ 9th Festival Tránsito en el Mar continues through Sunday, October 11, with free dance, theatre, workshops and family activities at venues around the city.
This year’s festival features 36 activities with 18 participating artists and groups. In addition to events in Guaymas, the festival has expanded into nearby communities including Vícam, Pótam, Las Guásimas and La Manga.
This weekend’s public program includes:
Saturday, October 10: Dance workshops run from 10:00am – 2:30pm at the Conservatorio de Música Fray Ivo Toneck. Beginning at 5:00pm, the Conservatorio’s outdoor forum will host family activities followed by Medio Cuento at 5:30pm, the contemporary dance performance Khora: el cuerpo que no es at 6:30pm, and La Cachimba Teatro’s family production Robota at 7:30pm.
Sunday, October 11: Dance workshops continue from 10:00am – 2:30pm at the Conservatorio. The festival’s closing activities move to Plaza 13 de Julio beginning at 5:00pm, followed by Postales del Desierto by Comparsa Sonora at 5:30pm, a cultural-history walk and improvisation jam at 6:00pm, and the festival finale with live music by Guajira Son at 7:30pm.
All festival activities are free.
Sunset Margarita Cruise on No Le Hace, October 8
The boat No Le Hace is offering a Sunset Margarita Cruise on Thursday, October 8. The comfortable, air-conditioned, 53 foot yacht has ample seating and a restroom.
The cruise is from 5:00pm – 7:00pm. It leaves from the Iguana Dock (right in front of Marvida Taproom & Kitchen) at Marina San Carlos.

Hammer Down Fishing Tournament, October 9 – 11
The Hammer Down Fishing Tournament returns to San Carlos from October 9 – 11, continuing a local fishing tradition that began nearly 43 years ago when San Carlos fishing legend Bill Hammer created the original Labor Day Tournament. Now renamed in his honor, the tournament also raises money for local charities.
Tournament Boat Insurance Requirement – Important: The Port Captain requires a Certificate of Insurance for all boats participating in the tournament. Your certificate must be submitted no later than 11:59pm on Thursday, October 8. This requirement is mandatory; no exceptions will be made. Registration and a no-host cocktail party will be held at the San Carlos Yacht Club on Friday, October 9 from 5:00pm to 8:00pm. The $250 USD per angler entry fee includes Friday night’s hamburger and fries, an Awards Dinner ticket, swag bag, tournament shirt and cap. Anglers can also enter optional cash jackpots.
Fishing takes place Saturday and Sunday from 7:00am to 3:00pm, with boats departing from Marina San Carlos or Marina Real. Competition includes marlin, sailfish, dorado, yellowfin tuna and wahoo. Billfish are strictly catch-and-release, while qualifying dorado, tuna and wahoo must weigh at least 15 pounds.
There’s a particularly big incentive for the overall winning team: Hammer Down is an Offshore World Championship qualifying event. The winners receive an invitation to compete at the World Championship in Quepos, Costa Rica, plus $15,000 USD toward travel expenses.
The weekend concludes with the Awards Dinner at the San Carlos Yacht Club on Sunday at 6:00pm. The remaining 15% of optional jackpot proceeds is donated to local charities.

Guaymazo Off Road Returns October 10 – 11
The 5th annual Guaymazo Off Road returns to Guaymas on October 10 and 11, bringing 4×4, UTV and ATV enthusiasts together for a weekend of off-road adventure.
Guaymazo combines exploring the rugged desert terrain around the Guaymas area with a social weekend for the off-road community. This year’s 1,500 peso registration fee per participant includes a participant kit and mechanical assistance during the event (the catamaran party is now sold out).
The event has attracted off-road enthusiasts from Sonora, other parts of Mexico and the United States in previous years and is also included in the Government of Sonora’s 2026 tourism calendar.

Future Events in San Carlos
Baseball is Back: Naranjeros Open Their Season Next Week, October 15
Baseball season is back in Sonora. The Naranjeros de Hermosillo begin their 2026 – 27 Liga Mexicana del Pacífico season next Wednesday, October 14, on the road against the Águilas de Mexicali before returning to Hermosillo for their home opener on Thursday, October 15 at 7:30pm at Estadio Fernando Valenzuela.
The new season brings a new manager to Hermosillo. José “Cheo” Moreno takes over the LMP’s most successful franchise, which has won a record 17 championships. Moreno previously managed Cañeros de Los Mochis to the league championship in 2022 – 23.
Before the regular season begins, there’s one more interesting cross-border matchup. The Naranjeros return to Tucson this Friday, October 9 at 6:00pm to face the University of Arizona Wildcats at Hi Corbett Field in the inaugural Sonoran Series. It will be the first time the Wildcats have hosted the Naranjeros at Hi Corbett, and tickets are $10 USD.
The teams already met October 1 during the Mexican Baseball Fiesta in Tucson in a high-scoring exhibition game won by Arizona. Hermosillo finished the Fiesta on a better note Sunday, shutting out Mexicali 6 – 0.
For San Carlos baseball fans, Hermosillo’s home games make an easy trip north during the winter season. After opening night, the Naranjeros’ next home series is October 20 – 22 against the Jaguares de Nayarit.
International Billfish Tournament, October 16 – 18
The International Billfish Tournament returns to San Carlos from Friday, October 16 through Sunday, October 18. Founded by Ernesto Zaragoza 79 years ago as the Zaragoza Tournament, this long-running San Carlos tradition combines two days of fishing with support for local charities.
Competition includes Billfish (Marlin and Sailfish), Dorado, Yellowfin Tuna and Wahoo. Billfish are catch-and-release only. Fishing takes place Saturday and Sunday from 7:00am to 3:00pm, with the weigh station at Marina San Carlos open from 2:00pm to 5:00pm. The Awards Dinner is Sunday at the San Carlos Yacht Club, with the bar opening at 5:00pm and dinner at 6:00pm.
Registration is $250 USD per angler and includes the Awards Dinner, tournament shirt and cap, swag bag and Friday night’s hamburger and fries. The Captain’s Package is $85 USD, and additional dinner tickets are $35 USD. Optional jackpots are also available.
Registration and the “No Host” Cocktail Party will take place Friday from 5:00pm to 8:00pm at the San Carlos Yacht Club. Anglers can save time by registering online at the San Carlos Fishing Tournaments website.
One important rule for billfish competitors: releases must be documented using an approved video camera that is checked and synchronized to tournament time during Friday’s registration. Cell phones and dash cameras cannot be used for release verification.

Caravan por la Vida Car Rally, October 16
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the community is invited to come together for the 3rd Annual Caravan for Life (Caravana por la Vida) on Friday, October 16.
Organized by Hospital San José Guaymas, the caravan aims to raise awareness about breast cancer, encourage prevention and early detection, and show support for women and families affected by the disease.
Add some pink to your wardrobe and decorate your car, motorcycle, golf cart or bike, then join the caravan as it makes its way from San Carlos to Guaymas.
The caravan starts at 5:30pm on Blvd. Tetakawi, across from Los Arbolitos in San Carlos, and will travel to Hospital San José in Guaymas.

Fishing Report
The action is slowly picking up with more boats on the water. The water is still very warm, but the air is drying out and it’s very nice with a light breeze. We were back on the water with morning charters, but the action was pretty limited. A few nice Sierra are around, but we never found the bonita. We couldn’t even jig up a calico, and the currents didn’t help. A few small sharks gave us some excitement. We’ll keep at it, but focus more on the pelagics.
The seas were pretty nice all week. Rachel threw some big long period waves that stirred up the shorelines. I thankfully looked at the radar Monday and saw a storm moving up the coast that didn’t show on the wind app. The rain didn’t make it to us, but the wind sure did. A lot of gutter balls, with the hurricanes, being thrown out there. Things are cooling off and drying out. Pressure differences and the warm water could still bring some surprises our way.
A few boats were out today after billfish and Dorado. I heard of one 30 pound Dorado caught. They lost another good one, and some good fish were caught in close on Sunday. We lost a big sail and our friends got a small Blue. There are a few billfish coming up. Hopefully the action will pick up for the tournaments.

Diving Report
If you enjoy diving in the San Carlos area but would like to dive other locations in the midriff area of the Sea of Cortez, Mexico Liveaboards offers 8-day excursions to the midriff islands. A couple of weeks ago, a group of three women set off from Tucson, first driving to Puerto Peñasco, where they joined seventeen other guests from around the US on a dive adventure on the Rocio del Mar liveaboard (pictured left).
The boat leaves on a Saturday evening and returns the following Saturday morning for a truly unique diving experience. Divers are pampered along the way and the motto quickly becomes wake, eat, dive, eat, dive, eat, dive, sleep and repeat. The “eat” part is the best, no cooking for divers, just delicious meals every time you come back to the boat.
The journey begins by crossing the gulf overnight to Sunday morning dives in the Isla Angel de la Guarda area. Water temperatures were in the high 80’s with visibility 40 – 50 feet. The next day, the Rocio headed to Bahia de los Angeles for dives with same temps and viz. In the afternoon, pangas from LA Bay came to take divers on a snorkel with whale sharks (pictured right) that come to feast in the bay. This trip there were at least 12 of them, most young and not fully grown, but still big.
The next stop along the way south were dives at Salsipuedes islands. These islands are very near the middle of the gulf between Baja and Isla Tiburon. Strong currents can be present, but we were fortunate and had some great dives, including a very nice night dive. After leaving there, we motored all night and awoke at Isla San Pedro Martir. This island is protected and has a very nice sea lion colony, similar to San Carlos’ San Pedro Nolasco.
After several warm water dives with great visibility, we started the journey back north, this time diving the eastern side of Isla Angel de la Guarda. The variety and amount of fish did not disappoint. And, because there is less stress from fishing along that route, there are some very large fish that we don’t get to see in the San Carlos area any more. Along the way there is amazing scenery…rugged mountains of beautiful colors reaching down to the sea, stark islands covered in bird guano with giant cardons, and of course vibrant sunrises and sunsets over Baja.

Hurricane Polo: Recovery Continues After the Storm
A week after Hurricane Polo, life in San Carlos has largely returned to normal. The community escaped the widespread damage that had been feared, despite powerful winds, heavy rain and large waves along the waterfront. The picture was very different in parts of Guaymas, Empalme and southern Sonora, where Polo’s torrential rains caused serious flooding that continued even after the hurricane had moved away.
In Guaymas, a SEMAR weather station recorded an extraordinary 371.4 mm (14.6 inches) of rain on September 29. Across southern Sonora, an emergency declaration covering 13 municipalities documented more than 8,150 damaged homes and approximately 29,230 people affected. Guaymas, which was conducting a separate damage assessment, was not included in those totals.
Why was the flooding so much worse south of San Carlos? Geography played a major role.
Much of San Carlos’ runoff has relatively short routes down steep terrain toward the Sea of Cortez. The low-lying Guaymas–Empalme valleys, however, receive runoff from a vast watershed extending far into the surrounding mountains. After Polo’s torrential rains, enormous volumes of water continued flowing down normally dry arroyos and into the valleys even after conditions in San Carlos and Guaymas had begun improving.
Once the water reached the flatter agricultural areas, overwhelmed drainage structures and containment berms made matters worse. In some communities, flooding actually began after the hurricane had passed. The amount of runoff was enough to inundate several sections of Highway 15 between Guaymas and Ciudad Obregón, forcing the highway to close for more than 10 hours. The highway has since reopened. The route north from Guaymas toward Hermosillo did not experience comparable widespread flooding.
Recovery continues
Most people who sought refuge in emergency shelters have returned home, but recovery continues in some rural communities.
As of October 5, authorities were still working to restore or improve access to several communities around Guaymas, while damaged rural roads and bridges remain under repair in parts of the Guaymas – Empalme region. The needs are also changing. In addition to food and drinking water, affected families have lost mattresses, clothing, appliances and other household belongings. Cleaning supplies, hygiene products and materials for repairing damaged homes are now part of the recovery effort.
How you can help
The Diocese of Ciudad Obregón and Cáritas have launched the #EsPorEllos campaign to help communities affected by Polo. Donations can be dropped off locally at Parroquia San Fernando, Parroquia de Guadalupe and Parroquia Medalla Milagrosa in Guaymas, and Parroquia Cristo Rey in Empalme.
Requested items include non-perishable foods, canned tuna and other meats, beans and lentils, shelf-stable milk, soap, shampoo, toothpaste, bleach, buckets, brooms, mops and other cleaning supplies.
For those of us in San Carlos, the contrast is striking. Our community was fortunate. Just a short distance away, some families are still dealing with the consequences of Polo and beginning the much longer process of replacing what they lost and repairing their homes.

Unusually High Tides Flood San Carlos and Guaymas
In San Carlos, water rose around Marina San Carlos, covering portions of the waterfront and parking areas (upper photo). In Guaymas, seawater reached Avenida Serdán, Calle 20 and areas around the Malecón, prompting temporary road closures on Sunday (lower photo). Low-lying areas of Empalme were also affected.
Despite the timing, the high water wasn’t simply another storm surge from Hurricane Polo. Local authorities and oceanographer Pedro Rosales Grano of the Instituto Tecnológico de Guaymas pointed to a combination of factors, including the astronomical tide, seasonal sea-level variation, warm water and atmospheric pressure. Recent heavy rainfall and runoff also made it more difficult for water to drain from some low-lying areas. The exact contribution of each factor isn’t known.
Could it happen again?
It’s worth keeping an eye on the waterfront this week. Astronomical tidal influence strengthens as the October 10 new moon approaches, although predicted high tides in San Carlos remain around 1 metre — roughly similar to the astronomical tide during Sunday’s flooding.
That means the tide tables alone don’t predict another flooding event. However, the recent flooding demonstrated that actual water levels can rise considerably higher when several factors combine. Residents and boaters in low-lying waterfront areas, including Marina San Carlos, should watch conditions around the morning and evening high tides over the next several days
CRRIFS: Hurricane Polo
Usually during storms, we have more turtle nesting activity. But maybe an actual hurricane was just too much. It was a slow week for nesting. We hope all our nearby Olive Ridley turtles were safe as the beaches were full of waves and the water rough. If any turtles laid eggs on San Francisco beach or Algodones beach they may have been washed away with the waves before volunteers arrived.
We located one nest at the end of last week on Piedras Pintas. Piedras Pintas’ sand is coarser and not a popular beach for nesting. It is the most protected, which is why she probably came ashore. On Tuesday afternoon, right after Polo swept through, we had 59 babies that needed to go home. We released them at Piedras Pintas, as the water was much calmer.
This season has been slower for nesting. This may have to do with the increased water temperatures. Two Olive Ridley nests were found a few weeks ago in Orange County, CA. This is an event that has never happened before, and scientists are attributing it to the warmer ocean waters.
With fewer nests so far, make sure you don’t miss out in participating in our largest, most popular fundraiser – Nest Adoption. When you adopt a nest, you can follow the journey to when the babies hatch. Then, attend the release where you and your family/friends/office can release the baby turtles and help them to the sea. This is perfect for individuals, families, groups of friends, businesses, and school classes.

Fishing & Cruising with No Le Hace
The boat No Le Hace is a comfortable, 53 foot yacht. It has air-conditioning and a restroom. It leaves from the Iguana Dock (right in front of Marvida Taproom & Kitchen) at Marina San Carlos.
There’s enough room for 30 passengers so come with your family and friends to explore the Sea of Cortez and experience the beautiful San Carlos shoreline, playful dolphins, and the best sunsets in the world. We are also set up for your next fishing trip. Ask us for details.

Live the adventure at the Kite Club, where you will find water activities for the whole family. What a great way for you to connect with the Sea of Cortez, considered the world’s aquarium.
Located on the beautiful soft sands of the popular Algodones beach, Kite Club’s activity center has something for everyone!
We can teach you how to Flyboard, Kitesurf, or Wakeboard, or just rent out equipment to you. At Kite Club we also rent out Jet Skis, single and double kayaks, and paddleboards. And we also offer boat rides. So now is THE time to get in and on the water! And while you are here, enjoy some delicious food and drinks from our Snack Bar. We are waiting to serve you today!
