- In order not to scare, stress or hit it, the maritime community is asked not to approach the Grey Whale that appeared on Monday near the shores of San Francisco beach. Elsa Coria of the CRRIFS reported that notice was already given to PROFEPA, the Port Captains, and Marine Secretariat so that with all appropriate security measures, the whale can be checked. The support of the community is requested, especially the tourist yachts of San Carlos, to maintain a distance of 240 meters from the whale and transit at low speed to avoid a collision, and allow it to feed without stress. This species of whale swims slower than others and because they are in shallow waters scrubbing the bottom in search of food, they cannot maneuver quickly.

Fishing & Birding Reports
San Carlos Fishing Report
The waters have warmed up to 67- 68 F not too far out, and I bet that a number of marlin are still there. Last Wednesday we found four within a few miles, and had a couple tugging on our lines. It was exciting to see some jumping, tailing, feeding, and even in our spread. Another surprise caught an opportunistic angler. Fishing from shore at Charly’s Rock, he hooked and landed a 46 pound yellowtail. This is by far the largest yellowtail that I have seen caught in San Carlos, and maybe a record caught from shore. We find a little variety from shore, so go get out and wet a line. by Bryan Replogle, Team Margarita Sportfishing, repsilon@aol.com |
San Carlos Birding Report
We had 12 for our outing last week and headed to the fishing docks at the Empalme estuary. It’s always tricky trying to catch the tide at just the right time to see the birds the best. We were a little early but our biggest problem was the cold wind blowing from the north. The birds were fairly close in but huddled together to stay warm. We saw a number of Black Skimmers crouching close to each other as well as a flock of about 40 Black-necked Stilts hiding in a little lagoon protected by the mangroves. The highlight was a flock of about 175 Brant, also huddled together, of course. We had 20 species and gave up early to head to Cocina de Rita restaurant in San Jose for breakfast. My Bird of the Week is the Brant. As I mentioned, our birding group spotted a flock of about 175 at the Empalme estuary last Thursday. Although it is not a rare bird for our area, it is seen only during migration. Brants are small geese and should not be confused with the similar sounding name Brandt’s Cormorant. They have a very distinctive appearance with a small black head and broken white necklace. Brants breed in the arctic and migrate long distances to winter in areas such as Baja California, coastal mid-Atlantic states, and estuaries in southern Sonora and Sinaloa. There are Brants in Europe but they are called Brent Geese. Our Brants have started their long migration to the Arctic. Like other geese, the Brant mates for life and both parents share care of the young. The goslings (baby geese) stay with their parents through the first migration. Our flock was gone by the following day but there should be sporadic sightings for a couple of weeks more. Empalme and Estero Soldado would be the most likely places but I have seen them along the shore in Creston. The birding group will meet this coming Thursday, February 5 at 8:00am at the Mariscos Esterito Cafe located at the end of San Carlos Bay near the fish camp and across from the Red Cross station. You do not need to be an experienced birder to join our group. If you do not know anything except that you want to know more, our group will help you learn. If you are an experienced birder and just want to know other birders, then join us and share your knowledge. Please bring your water, sun and insect protection, and a chair. And your binoculars, of course. Outings last until around 11:00am and we go out to lunch afterwards. If you have any questions, sightings to share, or comments, please feel free to contact me at maryltannehill@yahoo.com. I wish you Happy Birding wherever you are. by Mary Tannehill |

CRRIFS: Update on Cielo
He was diagnosed with a wing neck fracture and a severe infection in one of his eyes, which could have been a reason for his accident. After a few days he was stabilized, but an x-ray showed fractures in his wing and neck. We bandaged his wing to repair the fractures. After five months of rehabilitation, he was placed in a temporary aviary to exercise. This is the last step before he can be released to return home, but the 2023 summer sandstorm destroyed his cage and affected his rehabilitation. His injuries are such that he will probably never be able to return to the wild. He has become our ambassador. He loves to listen in on people’s conversations. We are planning to get him more enrichment toys so he is not bored in his enclosure. He happily eats chicken (bones and all), and he loves dead rodents. It costs around 700 pesos a week to feed Cielo. If you would like to donate for a week, we would love to have you visit our Wildlife Center in the Ranchitos to meet him and other patients. For these stories and more, please Save The Date for Sunday evening March 8, as CRRIFS will have our first Wildlife Gala at the San Carlos Yacht Club. More information is coming soon, or you can contact us by text or phone on WhatsApp at 622-152-9934. CRRIFS – We are much more than turtles! We found a great bite on Saturday morning between Doble and San Antonio within a mile for yellowtail to 20 pounds. A few bonita were in the mix and I believe that some skipjack showed up.
