Fishing & Birding Reports
San Carlos Fishing Report
The bait moved off the shorelines, and snorkeling because a little chilly. There were some big corvina found. I think there is some action up the coast. Cool weather and rains got things on the move. Still, big Yellowtail were holding off La Manga and Doble. The water is warm enough for another round of the full moon, I think it will be a busy week! by Bryan Replogle, Team Margarita Sportfishing, repsilon@aol.com |
San Carlos Birding Report
Note: We will meet this Thursday morning even though it is Thanksgiving Day but skip the lunch afterwards. Meeting time is 8:00am – 30 minutes later than previously. I love the rain that brings green growth and beautiful flowers; but, it also causes large puddles in the roads and muddy conditions. So, with the heavy rain the night before our outing, we decided it was best to stay in town and not risk some of our group’s cars getting stuck in mud. We had seven for our outing and went to the Marina Seca slough that runs by the boatyard and the Marina Seca settlement ponds behind the boatyard. Our problem with the Marina Seca slough now is that the constant flow of water from the Marina Seca settlement ponds has made everything grow and grow and spotting birds is more difficult in the thick foliage. We have been so spoiled the past two years. However, the weather was cool and perfect and although we didn’t see a lot of birds we were able to get wonderful views of a gorgeous male Vermilion Flycatcher darting out to catch insects and then perching prettily while devouring its prey. We saw a number of Blue-winged Teals in the slough along with a lone Cinnamon Teal. Up on the ponds the highlight was a flock of the elegant Northern Pintail ducks and the sighting of 4 Common Gallinules with their bright red face plates helping them to stand out as they foraged in the reeds along the edges of the ponds. We had 20 species total and went to breakfast/lunch at the Little Cactus. Special Alert: I know of one confirmed case of Dengue here in San Carlos and have heard there are a number of others. The rains have created lots of perfect little breeding grounds for mosquitoes and they are busy taking advantage of them. Please take precautions to avoid getting bitten. My Bird of the Week is the Northern Mockingbird. I have to admit that I don’t spend a lot of time trying to find this bird as it is practically in my face at whatever location I go to. This is not a bird that flits deep in the brush. No, no, no, it prefers to perch on high shrubs, trees, poles, or utility lines. It is so easy to ignore the birds that are always here and not give them their due but the Northern Mockingbird is a very special bird. It is a year round resident all over the middle and southern parts of the United States and throughout almost all of Mexico. It is known for its song and each Mockingbird’s song is unique. This is because they incorporate and mimic phrases from other birds, mammals, and even man-made sounds like car alarms and sirens that are around where they live. The specific combination of sounds and the cadence and rhythm are unique to each bird. They are life-long learners adding to their “repertoire” throughout their life. The female sings also but the males songs are louder. They sing most day and night but the night singers are usually unmated males (trying to find a mate or bemoaning their lack of?) Northern Mockingbirds are omnivores. This means they eat both fruits and insects which probably contributes to their ability to thrive in many different locations. They are not attracted to feeders but often visit yards with fruiting trees or bushes. The birding group will meet this coming Thursday, November 27 at 8:00am at the Mariscos Esterito Cafe located at the end of San Carlos Bay near the fish camp and across from the Red Cross station. (This is 30 minutes later than our previous meeting time. It is darker in the morning and cooler so the birders are not active as early and so we won’t be either.) You do not need to be an experienced birder to join our group. If you do not know anything except that you want to know more, our group will help you learn. If you are an experienced birder and just want to know other birders, then join us and share your knowledge. Please bring your water, sun and insect protection, and a chair. And your binoculars, of course. Outings last until around 11:00am. As this is Thanksgiving Day for Americans, we will not plan on going out to lunch. If you have any questions, sightings to share, or comments, please feel free to contact me at maryltannehill@yahoo.com. I wish you happy birding wherever you are. by Mary Tannehill |

CRRIFS: Birds and more Birds
We have a dove named “Salvador” recovering from a fractured wing. He is out in the yard and is visited daily by neighboring sparrows and an occasional dove. He should be released when he is better. “Paquito” is still with us. He is a duck but thinks he is a hawk. At his release we reported that he did not want to go home. He looked around, saw the other ducks at the Country Club pond and went back to his carrier. He likes it at The Wildlife Rescue Center. He was rescued when he was two days old, so he has never been around other ducks. He spends his days imitating our two resident Red-tail Hawks. He practices sitting on a wobbly perch, squawks and flies around. He has a wading pool in his cage but doesn’t swim very often. While we hope he will want to leave, he seems happy to stay. If you would like to tour our Center to meet Paquito and the other patients, please contact us on WhatsApp by phone or text at 622-152-9934. Our desert tortoises are still awake but should enter brumation soon. We don’t charge for tours, but welcome donations. *** We just rescued a very small desert tortoise who wandered into the Rescate sale on Saturday. He is hanging out at CRRIFS. He has a number on his back, so he is a pet. If he is yours, please come claim him. |
