San Carlos Pickleball Club Christmas Posada, December 11

“Dink the balls for wow’s and glories, Fa la la la la, La la la la!”

The annual San Carlos Pickleball Holiday Posada Fundraiser is taking place on Thursday, December 11 at La Palapa Griega. The doors open at 5:15pm and there’ll be live music by Sensa Nova and lots of other surprises.

The ticket price is 600 pesos and includes your choice of meal:
* 3/4 Rack of BBQ Baby Back Ribs, baked potato and Greek salad, or
* 3 Shrimp Taco Governador with flour tortillas, guacamole and salsa
* Special dessert
* Cash Bar: La Palapa Griega is kindly offering a 20% discount on all drinks!

A portion of each ticket will help to fund our club’s construction projects.

Christmas Parade, December 12

On Friday, December 12, there will be a Christmas Parade in Guaymas starting around 5:00pm.

Dozens of school groups, dance studios, and more will start at Calle 13, and parade along Serdán to the Three Presidents Plaza for the traditional lighting of the Christmas tree by the Mayor.

It will be followed by the inauguration of the 2025 Christmas Village at Plaza Centenario (on Calle 24 and across from Three Presidents Plaza – map).

There will also be ‘mapping’ projection on the Municipal Palace on December 12 and 13 at 8:00pm.

Rescate Marketplace, December 13

Every Saturday, browse the goodies for sale at the Rescate-sponsored Marketplace in the parking lot next to the Thrift Store from 9:00am – 1:00pm.

Many vendors will be selling their wares at the Marketplace, including baked goods, fresh fruit and vegetables and handcrafted items.

There will be live music to entertain as you shop.

All vendors are welcome (artisans, cooks, crafters … no tianguis). Vendors should WhatsApp to reserve a space at 622-126-2112 or 505-236-8942.

Everyone is invited to Club Deportivo’s BBQ Ribs Dinner and Christmas Tree of Lights on Saturday, December 13.

Cabezas de Loro presents Americana Music concert, December 19

On Friday, December 19, Eric Schaeffer will be joined by his good friends Liz Cerepanya and Peter Dalton Ronstadt (aka Liz & Pete’s Sparrows) for an afternoon show hosted by Cabezas de Loro.

It will be held upstairs at Chihuahua’s restaurant. Everyone is invited to attend. This is a holiday event, so feel free to dress up or wear your Ugly Christmas Sweater or tropical attire.

Time: Doors open/Happy Hour & seating at 1:00pm. Music is from 2:00pm – 4:30pm.

4:30pm: Raffle Drawings: Ticket sales will go to purchase items needed for the Guaymas family of four that lost everything when their house burned to the ground last month.

Christmas Posada, December 19

Come to La Calaca for an authentic Mexican holiday experience and take part in a traditional Posada on Friday, December 19 starting 5:00pm.

Pianist Roberto Galvan, violinist Martin Giacoman, and soprano Valeria Quijada, and students from the Da Capo music school in Guaymas, will fill the air with Christmas carols.

There will be three authentic Christmas meals to choose from: red and green tamales, chicken mole, or pozole, all served with typical side dishes, and the traditional buñuelo dessert.

There will be an opportunity to take pictures with Santa, Mrs. Claus and their elves, a piñata, and a Mexican Loteria game with prizes!

If you’ve never heard the Obregon sibling trio with Jahn & Gaby and their little sister on percussions, take this opportunity to appreciate their talent as traditional northern Mexican music artists!

Shrimp Festival, December 20

The annual Shrimp Festival will be held on Saturday, December 20 at Hotel Sawari between 12:00pm and 6:00pm.

Mouth-watering shrimp dishes will be prepared by many different restaurants, including Mariscos el Rey and Marvida. Tickets for shrimp samples are 70 pesos and entry into the event is free.

The live music program is:

12:30pm – Ballet Folklórico
2:30pm – Vino Tinto
5:45pm – Presentation of the winner of the best plate of the Shrimp Festival 2025

Boat Parade Awards Ceremony, December 21

The Annual Lighted Boat Parade will once again conclude at the San Carlos Yacht Club, where the community is invited to join the celebration.

At 7:00pm, the Club will be serving hot soup and bread to warm up all the boaters after the parade.

Awards for the best-decorated boats will be presented, with winners receiving special embroidered event sweatshirts.

Come enjoy the festive atmosphere and celebrate this beloved San Carlos tradition!

There will be a no host bar.

Doors open at 1:00pm a dinner is served at 2:00pm at the San Carlos Yacht Club.

San Carlos Fishing Report

It was all about the yellowtail last week. A few small bonita and Sierra are still around in closer, along with smaller yellowtail. I didn’t hear of anyone trying offshore, no corvina reports, and no one trying for bottomfish. If you wanted big yellowtail though, you should have had some luck.

Some double digit catches were had, with mad boils from Doble to La Manga. The pre-dawn bite was not to be missed, but fish were caught the first couple hours past sunrise. I didn’t hear of anyone trying in the afternoon. Trolling worked well, with many caught on the surface. The yellowtail are running 14 – 20 pounds and in good numbers. They are showing no sign of letting up.

San Carlos Birding Report

After a night of rain, we had only seven join us for birding last Thursday. We decided to go to Ojo de Agua because even though much of the road is unpaved, it is rocky and usually almost puddle free after a rain. As it turns out, the La Manga / Ojo de Agua area had had no rain so all was good.

It was slow going at first but when the sun finally came out, so did the birds. We had 23 species including several Orange-crowned Warblers, a Black-throated Sparrow, and the Black-throated Gray Warbler. Afterwards, we went to Doña Rosita’s restaurant in La Manga.

My Bird of the Week is the Black-necked Stilt. Stilts are one of the easiest shorebirds to identify. Nothing else has those long, very pink legs along with a distinctive and elegant black and white plumage and long, thin black bill. They can be found in estuaries, saltmarshes, flooded fields or salt pans. Here in San Carlos we see them at Estero Soldado, at all of the settlement ponds if the water is shallow enough at the edges for wading, and at the Marina Seca slough / arroyo when water is running through it and not too deep.

Allaboutbirds.org range maps indicate that the Black-necked Stilt breeds here. I have never seen the chicks but we observed an adult on a nest in late May at the Marina Seca ponds. Unfortunately they didn’t hatch before I had to leave San Carlos. Both sexes choose the nest site and incubate the eggs. The chicks are able to leave the nests within 24 hours of hatching. Birdsoftheworld.org reports that feeding of the young has never been observed and young stilts can survive in captivity without parents.

Stilts will forage day and night and eat mainly aquatic invertebrates. We see them generally in small vocal flocks chattering and bickering with each other constantly. For courtship, Birdsoftheworld.org reports that the pair forms when a female persistently associates with one male and is eventually tolerated. Not high on the romance scale but you have to give the male points for helping with the nest and incubation. Here in San Carlos, you are most likely to spot the Black-necked Stilt at the Estero Soldado.

The birding group will meet this coming Thursday, December 11 at 8:00am at the Mariscos Esterito Cafe located at the end of San Carlos Bay near the fish camp and across from the Red Cross station. You do not need to be an experienced birder to join our group. If you do not know anything except that you want to know more, our group will help you learn. If you are an experienced birder and just want to know other birders, then join us and share your knowledge. Please bring your water, sun and insect protection, and a chair. And your binoculars, of course. Outings last until around 11:00am and we go out to lunch afterwards. Clean Up San Carlos! is a group of local volunteers who work together to beautify our surroundings.

This Saturday, December 13, the whole community is invited to help.

Volunteering is easy! Just meet a the designated spot and we give you bags, gloves and trash grabbers. It usually takes about an hour but you can come for any amount of time. It’s a great way to start the weekend!

We will meet at 8:00am at the Tetakawi Trailhead (see red Pin on map). 

Join us, outside, and help keep San Carlos beautiful! Everybody is welcome.

** Bags and gloves and safety vests will be provided. Don’t forget to bring your drinking water.
** We have a few Grabbers on hand, but please bring your own if you have one.

Glitter, Glamor and Giggles!

Here’s your chance to be a San Carlos Super Star. Dazzle your friends and be the “Toast of the Town”! We are looking for creative, fun people to join the Follies Family and become Folliespians. It’s a great way to meet new friends this winter.

This is not a scripted play or a “Talent Show”. The Follies is more Musical Comedy Theater with an emphasis on humor. We are looking for Dancers, Singers, Lip-sync acts, Celebrity Impersonators (think Elvis? Cher? etc.), Magicians, Musicians, Comedy Skits, Spoofs (Pickleball Players? Realtors? Local “News”? Game Show?) Think outside the box! We also need Emcees (Solo or Team) and of course, Chorus Line Dancers.

Not a performer but still want to help? We always need behind the scenes volunteers! Want to perform but don’t have an act? Show up, sign up, who knows where that will lead. Hope to see you there.

Fishing & Cruising with No Le Hace

The boat No Le Hace is a comfortable, 53 foot yacht is air-conditioned and has a restroom. It leaves from the Iguana Dock (right in front of Marvida Taproom & Kitchen) at Marina San Carlos.

There’s enough room for 30 passengers so come with your family and friends to explore the Sea of Cortez and experience the beautiful San Carlos shoreline, playful dolphins, and the best sunsets in the world. We are also set up for your next fishing trip. Ask us for details.

El Mar Diving Center

We are San Carlos’ Premier Scuba Diving Center, providing Adventure since 1988. We offer certification courses (Open Water; Advanced; Diver Specialties such as navigation, underwater digi-photo, night, deep, and wreck diving) representing SSI and PADI Training.

Already certified? Then come to El Mar to rent or fill your tanks or service your equipment. Come in to purchase a mask and other merchandise. We also offer a snorkeling course.
