Festival del Pitic, May 21 – 24

International Fiestas del Pitic is a celebration of Dance and Music in Hermosillo. It celebrates the founding of Hermosillo, the capital city of Sonora, on May 18, 1700.

From Thursday, May 21 to Sunday, May 24, there will be daily national and international musicians and performers in many venues throughout the historic center of Hermosillo. There will be free concerts, theater, dance, film, literature, circus, and food venues combined to offer an unforgettable experience for all ages.

This year’s lineup of more than 1,500 national and international artists includes Maná, Grupo Frontera, Carlos Rivera and El Tri.

From May 21 to 24, enjoy with your family the largest artistic and cultural event in Hermosillo. All performances are free. Check the program here.

Ladies International Fishing Tournament (LIFT), May 22 – 24

One of San Carlos’ many popular fishing tournaments, the 32nd Annual Ladies International Fishing Tournament (LIFT), takes place on May 22 – 24 (Memorial weekend).

The entry fee is $150 USD per angler. The Captain’s Package is $60 USD. Register online here. Dinner tickets cost $35 USD.

Basic Rules: Mexican law requires a fishing license. Billfish are catch and release only. Read all the rules here.

There will be a “No Host” Cocktail Party on Friday, May 22 from 5:00pm to 8:00pm at the San Carlos Yacht Club for Registration.

The Fishing Tournament will begin at 7:00am and will end at 3:00pm each day.

The Awards will be presented on Sunday, May 24 at 6:00pm at the Awards Banquet at the San Carlos Yacht Club. You are encouraged to bring your captain and guests. However, extra tickets for guests are limited to availability.

Tucson Sailing Club Spring Regatta, May 22 – 24

In the Tucson Sailing Club Spring Regatta, you can sail the warm waters of the Sea of Cortez and party with other sailors.

The Tucson Sailing Club in conjunction with the San Carlos Yacht Club presents the 45th Annual International Cup Regatta in San Carlos, Sonora, Mexico from May 22 – 24.

The annual regatta is a multi-day sailing event and includes a number of festivities. See the events schedule here.

Sailors will be racing a single distance race each day of a two-day competition around a course of islands and marks.

The fee is $70 USD for members and $75 USD for non-members. The fee includes race registration only. Regatta registration here. All sailors are invited to enter the race.

Element playing at Mariscos el Rey, May 22

On Friday, May 22, the band Element is performing live in The Attic upstairs at Mariscos el Rey in San Carlos. These classic rock titans will play all of your favorite hits.

The event starts at 8:00pm.

There are only 50 tickets available at a cost of 500 pesos. Once these are sold, tickets are 600 pesos per person.

Rescate Marketplace, May 23

Every Saturday, browse the goodies for sale at the Rescate-sponsored Marketplace in the parking lot next to the Thrift Store from 8:00am – noon.

Many vendors will be selling their wares at the Marketplace, including baked goods, fresh fruit and vegetables and handcrafted items.

There will be live music to entertain as you shop.

The Rescate / Yacht Club Fishing Tournament, May 29 – 31

Come fish the magic waters of San Carlos. The 2025 Yacht Club / Rescate Fishing Tournament will take place from May 29 – 31.

It promises to be a fun time, as always, with lots of prizes including new daily angler awards. This is an event where a lone angler could enter and for no more than the entry fee, walk off with several thousand dollars in prize money. There are Daily Angler Awards and both Fun Fish Jackpots and regular Jackpots.

The entry fee is $250 USD per angler, which includes tournament swag and awards dinner (there’s no boat fees). The Captain’s Package is $85 USD and includes the Awards Dinner and tournament shirt. Other buy-in jackpots are available. Register here.

Read the rules here. Mexican law requires a valid fishing permit for each angler.

There will be a “No Host” Cocktail Party from 5:00pm to 8:00pm on Friday, May 29 at the San Carlos Yacht Club for Registration and Jackpot Entries. Bring all video cameras that will be used. You are encouraged to bring your Captain and guests to this event. Extra dinner tickets cost $35 USD.

The Awards Dinner will be Sunday, May 31 with doors open at 6:00pm at the San Carlos Yacht Club.

Fishing will take place Saturday and Sunday from 7:00am to 3:00pm.

Farewell Celebration for Moon Shadow, May 31

On Sunday, May 31, Colibri is hosting a special Farewell Celebration for Moon Shadow (aka Bridget), as she begins a new chapter in her life.

This final show and special gathering of music and friendship will include in the line-up the following musicians: Moon Shadow, Luis Villa on the sax, Brendon William and DJ B Lit.

The event will take place from 6:00pm – 9:00pm.

Marinaterra Dorado Derby: June 12 – 13

The 12th annual Marinaterra Dorado Derby will take place from June 12 – 13.

The registration fee is 4,000 pesos. Proceeds from this tournament will be donated to local charities.

This prestigious sport fishing tournament, known for being one of the largest in the state, brings together anglers to compete for great prizes, including ATVs for the winners.

Participation is on an individual basis and the winner is the participant who presents the heaviest male dorado fish, in accordance with the tournament rules.

Fishing Report

The Dorado are moving in. Some are making it to the shorelines, but the better fish are farther out. One angler had a spectacular catch, almost going to the middle. One little jackpot floater was found with a school under it. Many fish are in the 20 pound range, with some up to 40 pounds. There are some smaller fish, but the average size is very impressive.

Marlin too were spotted only a mile out. They are scattered all over, and as usual early in the season, they were finicky at times. I heard of a couple sailfish caught, but the numbers have yet to arrive. Bait still seems very minimal out there. You do need to put in the time, as one boat did and caught nice Dorado all week.

Some boats scraped out some bottom fish, while we found some decent ravenous predators. The client was talking about jacks, when we then proceeded to catch the first of the year. We also were surprised by a couple good bonita. The Sierra started to bite better as well. Yellow snapper started to show in close, and many small Sierra were caught from shore.

Tropical life is starting to show, as well as hydroids, string-of-pearls, and I even saw blue sailor jellyfish. The ocean is warming up.

Birding Report

Hola Birding Enthusiasts,

This past week we once again went to the natural water seeps at Ojo de Agua north of La Manga. My original plan was to go to the settlement ponds at El Palmar, a place we have not visited in some time. However, the weather was hot and El Palmar requires some walking and is somewhat overgrown which would require clipping, a task none of the 8 of us wanted to do in hot weather. When I mentioned the Varied Buntings had returned for the summer and I had seen three beautiful males the day before, the vote was universal to return to Ojo.

It turned out to be a good choice and we had a glorious birding day. It was non-stop birds with great views of two male Western Tanagers, 4 Varied Buntings, Northern Yellow Warblers, Western Warbling Vireos, Ash-throated and Brown-crested Flycatchers, 8 Gambel’s Quail surrounding us and chatting to each other, and a pair of Canyon Towhees. When we started to feel too warm, we called it a successful day and headed to the air-conditioning at El Mar Restaurant for breakfast.

My Bird of the Week is the Groove-billed Ani. This is one of our most entertaining birds in San Carlos and in past years we have seen them in various locations. My bird in the photo was at the Marina Seca slough next to the boatyard.

Anis are large and black and have huge chunky bills and tails that seem to never end. Sonora is about as far north as these neo-tropical birds go although there are isolated sightings in southern Arizona. They are common in Central and South America. In the US, southern Texas is the only area in which they are seen regularly. While they are part of the Cuckoo family just like the Greater Roadrunner, the only thing in common seems to be the toe arrangement: two set forward and two back.

You will see them foraging in tall leafy trees in small flocks of up to about 10 birds or thrashing through grass using their large tails to flush insects and small lizards. During the breeding season, they break into pairs but the pairs return to the flock to create one large nest where all eggs are deposited. Then each member of the flock takes turns sitting on the nest for incubation. All is not always hunky dory; however, as females have been known to remove another bird’s eggs before laying their own.

The sexes are similar in both size and plumage. Even if you see them getting affectionate, like I have in the past, you can’t assume the one on top is the male because reverse mounting is common according to birdsoftheworld.org. Preening each other is also common and I have witnessed this behavior both before and after mating. Their sound is as unique as their looks and can often be heard before you see them. Click here for their song.

The birding group will meet this coming Thursday, May 21 at 7:30am at the Mariscos Esterito Cafe located at the end of San Carlos Bay near the fish camp and across from the Red Cross station. 

You do not need to be an experienced birder to join our group. If you do not know anything except that you want to know more, our group will help you learn. If you are an experienced birder and just want to know other birders, then join us and share your knowledge. Please bring your water, sun and insect protection, and a chair. And your binoculars, of course. Clean Up San Carlos, May 23

Clean Up San Carlos! is a group of local volunteers who work together to beautify our surroundings.

This Saturday, May 16, the whole community is invited to help.

Volunteering is easy! Just meet a the designated spot and we give you bags, gloves and trash grabbers. It usually takes about an hour but you can come for any amount of time. It’s a great way to start the weekend!

We will meet at 8:00am at San Francisco beach 2 parking area close to the street (see Red Pin on map). There is lots of roadside trash in this immediate area.

Join us, outside, and help keep San Carlos beautiful! Everybody is welcome.

** Bags and gloves and safety vests will be provided. Don’t forget to bring your drinking water.
** We have a few Grabbers on hand, but please bring your own if you have one.

The boat No Le Hace is a comfortable, 53 foot yacht is air-conditioned and has a restroom. It leaves from the Iguana Dock (right in front of Marvida Taproom & Kitchen) at Marina San Carlos.

Kite Club

Live the adventure at the Kite Club, where you will find water activities for the whole family. What a great way for you to connect with the Sea of Cortez, considered the world’s aquarium.

Located on the beautiful soft sands of the popular Algodones beach, Kite Club’s activity center has something for everyone!

We can teach you how to Flyboard, Kitesurf, or Wakeboard, or just rent out equipment to you. At Kite Club we also rent out Jet Skis, single and double kayaks, and paddleboards. And we also offer boat rides. So now is THE time to get in and on the water! And while you are here, enjoy some delicious food and drinks from our Snack Bar. We are waiting to serve you today! Or just come and check out the kiteboarding show while sipping on a refreshing cocktail and enjoying our music at the beach.

Specials: With a minimum consumption of 650 pesos, your 100 pesos entrance fee will be reimbursed by the restaurant.
