Semana Santa, March 29 to April 5
The week leading up to Easter sees an influx of thousands of people into Sonora’s beach-side towns. This is a popular time for family vacations. And what better place to spend it than on a sandy palm-lined beach?
Semana Santa, or Holy Week, goes from Palm Sunday to Easter Monday (March 29 to April 5, 2026). It is Mexico’s second most important holiday season, after Christmas.
School children have a two week holiday, and many companies close-up shop during that time so that their employees can spend time with their families.
For some, it is time to spend in church, but many Mexicans will also take advantage of the holiday to go on vacation. And, for their vacation, half of Mexico flocks to the beaches looking to play in the surf, camp on the beach, spend time with family and friends and to dance, drink and have a fiesta.
Yes, Semana Santa is noisy and crowded and the traffic can be horrible, but it’s a fantastic Mexican celebration that should be experienced at least once. You will not regret or soon forget sharing in the excitement of a whole town celebrating together.
By day the beaches are overflowing with tourists and locals alike, flying kites, swimming and soaking up the beautiful weather. Enjoying fun in the sun and a couple cervezas. If you need to drive anywhere, this is the time to do it, because by late afternoon, the roads are bumper to bumper with trucks, cars, ATVs and motor bikes cruising up and down the strip. The vehicles are loaded to overflowing with people. Whole families ride on ATVs. And, speakers and plastic Tecate chairs in the back of pick-up trucks convert them into parties on wheels.
From one end of the town to the other, celebrants, young and old, families and friends fill the streets. Thirsty revelers guzzle Pacifico and Tecate. The already raucous atmosphere is pumped up even higher with roving musicians who add to the cacophony coming from hundreds of vehicles’ sound systems turn up to the max. People dance in large groups anywhere and everywhere that the feeling moves them.
Vendors line the street selling everything from souvenirs and sunglasses to local crafts. The mouth-watering smell of BBQ wafts through the air. All the local food specialties are available, from ceviche to carne asada. In addition to all the regular restaurants, there are dozens of temporary stalls set up to sell these tasty eats.
Yes, Semana Santa is noisy and crowded and the traffic can be horrible, but it’s a fantastic Mexican celebration that should be experienced at least once. You will not regret or soon forget sharing in the excitement of a whole town celebrating together.

Fishing & Birding Reports
San Carlos Fishing Report
There was plenty of action in close mid-week, but I haven’t heard of many reports lately. Some massive boils were around Deer Island, but I think barracuda and other small predators have taken over. I saw a few photos of large yellowtail caught from shore down around Guaymas. The yellowtail are around, and some snapper and cabrilla are in close too. The weather has continued to be calm and warm. I wouldn’t be surprised if we start to see Dorado within a week. We saw a few Humpbacks roaming around last week, along with lots of dolphin. I spotted many triggerfish and one big corvina while snorkeling. Trolling and jigging worked at the Island, but the afternoon popper bite has been phenomenal. It has been so good that you will appreciate not catching too many. by Bryan Replogle, Team Margarita Sportfishing, repsilon@aol.com |
Birding Report
We had 8 for our outing on the 19th and headed to the Esterito Road watering hole which is getting increasingly smaller. For bird watching, this is a good thing (until the water disappears) because it consolidates the birds into a smaller area for viewing. We were hoping to see the Rose-breasted Grosbeak which a couple of us had seen on March 16th and 18th. That didn’t happen but it was a glorious day anyway. The weather was warm but with a cooling breeze and the birds were plentiful. We had 21 species including the female Painted Bunting, the Rufous Hummingbird, male and female Common Yellowthroats, and almost non-stop views of the beautiful male and female Lazuli Buntings. Besides the Orange-crowned Warbler which has been delightfully common this winter, we also had a good view of the striking MacGillivray’s Warbler. We ended the day at the Cactus Garden restaurant. My Bird of the Week is that beautiful Rose-breasted Grosbeak I mentioned earlier (pictured left). If you drew a line vertically through the US and Mexico, this bird would be on the eastern side. So, to see it this far west is a rarity. We saw it in 2018 and then not until December of 2025. The first time we only saw the female and from a great distance. These last times we had the beautiful male and he gave us good looks so I have a photo to share. The Rose-breasted Grosbeak is a medium-sized finch but with a much larger seed-eating bill. It is closely related to the Black-headed Grosbeak (pictured right) which is an uncommon treat here but not considered rare. Since I just saw the Black-headed a couple of days ago, I am including photos of both for comparison. In general, the Black-headed Grosbeak is in the west and the Rose-breasted is in the eastern part of the US. When the two species find themselves in the same area (like the midwest of the US), they will often hybridize. Both the male and female Rose-breasted sing and both share incubation, brooding, and feeding duties at the nest according to Birdsna.org. The song is somewhat similar to that of the American Robin. It primarily lives in mixed forests and thickets but will take advantage of food to be found in parks and gardens of humans. So much so that, Birdsna.org says, “Historically, the species has been considered both a pest, due to its fondness for tree buds, flowers, cultivated peas and fruits, and a beneficial species, as it eats potato beetle larvae, scale insects, and other insects injurious to crops.” Here we consider it a rare delight. The birding group will meet this coming Thursday, March 26 at 8:00am at the Mariscos Esterito Cafe located at the end of San Carlos Bay near the fish camp and across from the Red Cross station. You do not need to be an experienced birder to join our group. If you do not know anything except that you want to know more, our group will help you learn. If you are an experienced birder and just want to know other birders, then join us and share your knowledge. Please bring your water, sun and insect protection, and a chair. And your binoculars, of course. Outings last until around 11:00am and we go out to lunch afterwards. If you have any questions, sightings to share, or comments, please feel free to contact me at maryltannehill@yahoo.com. I wish you Happy Birding wherever you are. by Mary Tannehill |
