San Carlos and Guaymas Photos
Mexican Independence Day was celebrated throughout San Carlos and Guaymas as people donned their best green, white and red. Parties, boat parades, fireworks, a gallery opening, and the Guaymas Mayor’s “El Grito” all commemorated Mexico’s Independence from Spanish rule. ¡Viva México! San Carlos Weather Forecast
This week, we’ll have mostly sunny skies. The daytime highs will be 33 C (92 F) on Wednesday, rising daily until it’s 36 C (96 F) on Sunday. Nighttime highs will be 28 – 29 C (82 – 85 F). The daytime humidity will be low 60% until Sunday when it drops a bit to the mid 50%. There’s a small chance of scattered showers Thursday afternoon through Sunday.
According to the National Hurricane Center, a broad area of low pressure is located a few hundred miles off the coast of southwestern Mexico that is producing a large area of showers and thunderstorms. Gradual development of this system is expected, and a tropical depression is likely to form in a couple of days while it moves west-northwestward.
Keep an eye on the weather at our San Carlos Weather page with satellite images and live weather feeds.
Exciting News for San Carlos: Lakeside Medical Group & San Jose Hospital
We are thrilled to announce, that after over a year of negotiations, Lakeside Medical Group has now partnered with the new San Jose Hospital! This is great news, because now it will only be minutes to the best hospital in Sonora, instead of having to transport to Hermosillo an hour and half away. Many lives will be saved by this new partnership.
If you get a chance, be sure to thank Elizabeth Hovey for successfully negotiating this arrangement with the hospital for Lakeside — it wouldn’t have happened without her tireless efforts.
Lakeside Medical Group is Mexico’s largest network of private hospitals. Your free membership gives you access to the best private care with zero out-of-pocket costs for medical emergencies and urgent care. Lakeside will even cover your deductible, coinsurance and copays — you just show your Lakeside card, get treated immediately, and never even see a bill. Lakeside has over 12,000 members in Mexico, and about 500 currently here in San Carlos. You can learn more about Lakeside at lakemedicalgroup.com.
So to be absolutely clear — if you are a member of Lakeside and have any kind of medical emergency, you can now use the San Jose Hospital and pay nothing. The only catch is you need to have insurance Lakeside accepts, and I am happy to help you find the best no cost or low cost plan.
We will be facilitating live seminars at the new San Jose Hospital in San Carlos every FRIDAY at 10:00am, starting this Friday, September 19, so you can tour the facilities and learn about Lakeside Medical Group, and the types of insurance plans they accept, including certain Medicare plans, expat major medical and travel medical plans.
Contact me, Greg Hovey, to RSVP for this Friday. We have limited seating. I will bring the dragon fruit lemonade.

Fishing & Diving Reports
Fishing Report
The shorelines in the middle of town were loaded with small bait. The skipjack were tearing through the bait into a foot of water. I caught a couple on a 9wt fly rod, which was fun. I didn’t get any more big corvina, but plenty of small ones. I must have caught ten different species on a small spoon lure. The water cleared at times for some great snorkeling. There are a lot of big snapper around. Look for the birds, and you will find the fish. by Bryan Replogle, Team Margarita Sportfishing, repsilon@aol.com |
Diving Report
When we arrived at the first dive site, La Ventana Sur (South Window) on the westside, we looked down into the water and could see the bottom in detail…about 35 feet down! Visibility in a dive makes all the difference between seeing a few / no fish in the water column to huge schools of fish. Same goes for your dive buddies…in low viz you are constantly looking for your buddy, but with good viz you can spread out and find interesting things to share. At this site, divers saw two Green turtles (pictured left), the ever playful sea lions, Bluespotted jawfish popping out of their tube homes, and large schools of Scissortail damsels, King angelfish, and Sargent majors. The second dive of the day was Punta Norte (North Point), again with great visibility, at least 60+ feet. Free swimming Green moray eels were not shy, coming out from under the boulders to chase fish. There were many juveniles in the 1″ to 3″ range – Yellowtail surgeonfish, Bluechin parrotfish, and Pacific creolefish. Juveniles in fish are often very different looking than the adult. The immature Mexican hogfish (pictured right) is very brightly colored compared to the drab grey of the adult. Water temperatures are still in the mid to high 80’s and with this visibility you have to go diving or snorkeling now! Stop by El Mar Diving Center San Carlos and see what trips are coming up. by Annette Felix and Feliza Rios, El Mar Diving Center; photos by Ignacio Gonzales Trejo |

CRRIFS: A Special Turtle Nesting
CRRIFS volunteers retrieved the eggs from the nest cavity. Normally, it takes time to figure out from the turtle’s tracks where the nest bed would be. Volunteers poke the sand with a thin tool to see where it goes into the sand easily. Since everyone saw where the nest was, it was not long before the eggs were located. The beach goers were fascinated to see this process and asked lots of questions and helped count the eggs. We put the eggs in a Styrofoam cooler with a layer of sand at the bottom and around the sides. The cooler was taken carefully to our Incubation Center to protect the nest and help the babies hatch. This nest will be ready to be released out on Los Algodones beach in about 45 -60 days. If you would like to adopt this nest or any of the others we have located on almost every beach in San Carlos, call or text our nest hotline at 622-172-9176 on WhatsApp. More information is on our Facebook page. Please like us @CRRIFS. Centro de Rescate Rehabilitación e Investigación de Fauna Silvestre A.C. on Facebook and Instagram. |
