Starry Sonora Sky, by Tomas Abarca

All levels of government are working together to ensure that Semana Santa 2026 is safe and fun for all residents and tourists alike. To that end, some roadblocks and barricades will be set up around town. Give yourselves extra time to get anywhere this week.
The last game of the series was pure excitement and ended with the victory of La Familia (Sunset, Calaca and Soggy Peso) in the Softball Championship. Pride, passion and community in every play.

Fishing & Birding Reports
San Carlos Fishing Report
The first Dorado was caught by the boat that I expected it to. Marlin are not far out, and one was released. There’s a little wind is in the forecast for the holiday weekend, but summer is here. I am seeing some tropical fish showing up along the shorelines. There are a lot of cabrilla and triggerfish. A friend reported some good early morning corvina catches. The bass lake should be prime after the spawn. There are some big Sierra around, and kayakers were casting into boils of yellowtail. Enjoy it before it gets any hotter! by Bryan Replogle, Team Margarita Sportfishing, repsilon@aol.com |
Birding Report
Note: We will begin our outings at 7:30am starting this week — April 2nd. We had 6 for our outing last week. The human migration north before Semana Santa has begun. We went to the new development at El Rincón del Ensueño on the west side of San Carlos. It has lots of shade and I wanted to check out the Least Grebe nests. There are two nests with Leasts sitting on them but no chicks. On the east pond, we spotted a chick that appeared to be about a month old. This nest had completely eluded us and this was our first spotting of the chick. It still has its baby striping on the face but is almost the size of the parents and foraging well on its own. However, we did not see it straying more than a few feet from the adults. We also spotted a Western Kingbird, the first of the season. These birds with bright yellow bellies migrate north through our area from mid March to mid April. This one is right on time. We ended the day with 37 species and had lunch on the shaded patio at El Mar. My Bird of the Week is the Crested Caracara which we spotted on Monday on the road to Kino. Its Spanish name in Mexico is Caracara Quebrantahuesos. Allaboutbirds.org sums it up perfectly stating “the Crested Caracara looks like a hawk with its sharp beak and talons, behaves like a vulture, and is technically a large tropical black-and-white falcon.” We spotted it on the highway eating a bit of carrion. While the Crested Caracara will never turn down a bit of carrion (dead stuff), it actually has a very diverse diet. In addition to feeding on carrion, the Crested Caracara consumes a wide array of live prey, including mammals, birds and their eggs, turtles, lizards, snakes, frogs, crabs, earthworms, scorpions, insects, and other invertebrates. It sometimes hunts from perches or on the wing (for carrion) but mostly forages on the ground. It is the only falcon that collects material to build a nest. Other falcons lay their eggs in old nests built by other species. Another interesting fact considering that the Caracara is a falcon, is that it will take part in social grooming with the Black Vulture. Social grooming is technically called allopreening and is when one bird grooms another. Normally, it is between mated birds or among flocks but it has been documented previously between Black Vultures and the Crested Caracara. We have occasionally seen this fascinating behavior at Ojo de Agua where a large flock of Black Vultures congregates and the Caracara sometimes swoops in. In the US, the Crested Caracara is only found in a few southern states. We only occasionally see it here in San Carlos. However, if you venture south of Empalme, you will begin to see it quite often, usually perched on utility poles. The birding group will meet this coming Thursday, April 2 at 7:30am at the Mariscos Esterito Cafe located at the end of San Carlos Bay near the fish camp and across from the Red Cross station. This is a new time. Days are warmer and birds are earlier. While it is Semana Santa week, we have had no problems birding in the morning in past years. We will probably skip lunch to make sure birders can avoid heavy traffic. You do not need to be an experienced birder to join our group. If you do not know anything except that you want to know more, our group will help you learn. If you are an experienced birder and just want to know other birders, then join us and share your knowledge. Please bring your water, sun and insect protection, and a chair. And your binoculars, of course. Outings last until around 11:00am. If you have any questions, sightings to share, or comments, please feel free to contact me at maryltannehill@yahoo.com. I wish you Happy Birding wherever you are. by Mary Tannehill |
