Fishing & Birding Report
Fishing Report
Southern swell has appeared with the warmer weather and fogs to free some amazing quantities of seaweed. I have never seen so much. Hopefully it will harbor some Dorado sometime. At the moment it is making trolling difficult for the few yellowtail boils we are seeing. We jigged up one 22 pound grouper, and there could be some good fishing for them soon. Calico fishing should also be decent. The water was swarming with tiny Myopic Shrimp, but no whales were around. The Island produced nearly no yellowtail reports, but a few cabrilla were still found. The Sierra were fairly absent inshore. I did find a corvina from shore that provided a legendary battle. The moon is entering a good phase this week. Massive bait balls are down deep, so hopefully they will leave that small bait and the predators will want something bigger. Fish in warmer waters can work up an appetite. by Bryan Replogle, Team Margarita Sportfishing, repsilon@aol.com |
Birding Report
For our last outing there were four of us and we headed to the Marina Seca settlement ponds. This is the primary treatment plant for San Carlos sewage and was enlarged two years ago. As a result of the construction, all the foliage that provided protection for birds that used the ponds was destroyed. However, it is amazing how quickly that greenery returns when there is water chock full of nutrients. But, while there are plentiful Castor Bean plants and reeds are growing higher by the minute, there is still very little shade. Since the forecast was for a cloudy morning, it seemed like a perfect time to check out what is happening there. The ducks that winter on settlement ponds have left to go north but we spotted two Black-bellied Whistling Ducks. These will stay for the summer and breed here. We also saw numerous Black-necked Stilts with at least two pairs on nests along the path between the ponds. There were Least Sandpipers, American Coots and, at least, two Common Gallinules. We then went to what I call the Marina Seca slough. This is an area of water (from the Marina Seca ponds) that runs along the arroyo by the Marina Seca boatyard. It also has had tremendous growth in the past two years with reeds at least 15 feet high and numerous little shallow pond areas. It is a great place for birds to hide but many of them like to go back and forth between the slough and the ponds and we had great views of small flocks of Snowy Egrets, Great Egrets, Black-necked stilts, and Black-bellied Whistling Ducks flying at low altitude. We also had a great view of a male Lazuli Bunting feasting on the seeds of the Buffalo Grass that has sprung up in the arroyo / slough. The clouds cleared early making it warm without shade so we ended our outing with breakfast at the always excellent Las Capitanas. The Bird of the Week is the Varied Bunting. It is one of the most beautiful birds we see here in San Carlos. Allaboutbirds.com describes it well when it says it is a “stunning mosaic of rich plum, crimson, cherry red, and lavender-violet.” The females are a warm brown color with subtle blue streaking. Most of you miss seeing the Varied Bunting because it does not arrive in San Carlos until mid to late May. It also migrates to only a very few southern US locations in Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. Males usually arrive one to several days before the females and we are seeing both now. However, this season, for some unknown reason, we have had several sightings of both the male and female Varieds all winter and mid April is definitely early for them to be here but here they are and we birders are delighted. Like our desert sparrows, the Rufous-winged and the Black-throated, the Varied Bunting will often delay breeding until there is rainfall. After the rainfall there is food to feed the chicks. They eat insects and seeds and we often see them foraging for seeds in plants near the edges of the settlement ponds. In fall, the Varied Bunting will migrate to further south in Mexico and Guatemala to spend the winter. Its name in Mexico is Colorín Morado. The birding group will meet this coming Thursday, April 23 at 7:30am at the Mariscos Esterito Cafe located at the end of San Carlos Bay near the fish camp and across from the Red Cross station. You do not need to be an experienced birder to join our group. If you do not know anything except that you want to know more, our group will help you learn. If you are an experienced birder and just want to know other birders, then join us and share your knowledge. Please bring your water, sun and insect protection, and a chair. And your binoculars, of course. Outings last until around 11:00am and we go out to lunch afterwards. If you have any questions, sightings to share, or comments, please feel free to contact me at maryltannehill@yahoo.com. I wish you Happy Birding wherever you are. by Mary Tannehill |

CRRIFS: Bird Traps at Sea, Part 1
This has been the case of several reported birds we have attended. Last week we went on a call at Delfin Condos where a brown pelican was reported with a fishing lure caught in its back. It was evident he had been struggling with it for a while. We think he probably inhaled water into his lungs in this fight, as he had a bad respiratory infection. We brought him back to CRRIFS to start treatment but sadly he didn’t survive. This also happened to a cormorant we rescued last month. We were called in by a worker at Triana Condos as it had swallowed two fishing hooks. Its wounds were too great for him to survive surgery to remove them. CRRIFS veterinarians humanely euthanized him and performed a necropsy before burial. We just rescued a gull who seems promising to recover and be released. An update will follow next week. Not all cases are successful, but every patient tells us what is happening in the ocean right now and it prepares us for the next one that might come in with similar conditions. If you see any birds or animal affected by fishing gear or that need immediate help, please contact us by calling or texting us on WhatsApp at 622-152-9934. And report to Mexican authorities “PROFEPA” at 662-217-5453 any ghost or abandoned fishing nets / gear. CRRIFS – We are much more than turtles!
