Hurricane Polo Made Landfall Near Guaymas
After reaching Category 5 strength over the Pacific, Hurricane Polo weakened before crossing Baja California Sur and the Gulf of California, then made its second landfall just east of Guaymas on Tuesday morning, September 29.
At 11:00am, the National Hurricane Center placed Polo’s center about 30 km (20 miles) east of Guaymas. It was a Category 1 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 120 km/h (75 mph), moving northeast at 28 km/h (17 mph). Polo weakened rapidly after moving inland over Sonora.
Polo brought exceptionally heavy rain to the Guaymas area. Updated measurements reported Tuesday afternoon showed 371.4 mm (14.6 inches) of rain at the Secretaría de Marina RN-2 station in Guaymas as of 11:25am, substantially higher than earlier reports. The same station recorded a maximum wind gust of 104 km/h (65 mph). Empalme recorded 80.4 mm (3.2 inches) of rain. A reliable measured rainfall total specifically for San Carlos was not available before newsletter deadline.
The rainfall caused widespread street flooding in Guaymas and Empalme, with particularly significant flooding reported in central Guaymas, along Avenida Aquiles Serdán and near the malecón. Vehicles were stranded in floodwater, and fallen trees and utility poles were reported. The Mexican Army activated Plan DN-III-E in Guaymas and Empalme to assist residents and support recovery efforts. Strong winds also caused damage and power outages. Several CFE poles reportedly fell in the Las Villas area of Guaymas, damaging vehicles, while a utility pole and transformer fell onto a home in Empalme. CFE deployed crews to repair damaged electrical infrastructure throughout the affected region.
San Carlos experienced heavy rain, strong winds and rough seas, although conditions varied considerably around the area. Local reporting indicated wind gusts of approximately 90 km/h (56 mph) in San Carlos. Large waves affected exposed coastal areas, including Los Algodones and the malecón, where damage to portions of the pedestrian structures was reported.
Despite the flooding and property damage, no fatalities had been reported in the Guaymas/San Carlos/Empalme area as of Tuesday afternoon. Damage assessments and cleanup are continuing as conditions improve.
Polo was an exceptionally powerful hurricane earlier in its life, reaching Category 5 strength with maximum sustained winds of 285 km/h (180 mph). Fortunately, it weakened substantially before reaching Sonora. While the Guaymas rainfall was severe, it remained well below the extraordinary rainfall recorded during Hurricane Jimena in 2009, when Guaymas received approximately 672 mm (26.5 inches).
For San Carlos and Guaymas, the worst of Polo has now passed. Cleanup and damage assessments will continue, while the weather is expected to turn mostly sunny and dry beginning Wednesday.
San Carlos Weather Outlook for the Week
After Hurricane Polo’s passage through the Guaymas area Tuesday, San Carlos should see a rapid return to much quieter weather. Mostly sunny skies and little to no rain are expected throughout the week, with daytime highs generally around 32 – 35°C (90 – 95°F) and overnight lows around 25 – 29°C (77 – 84°F). Wednesday should be one of the cooler days before temperatures return to the low-to-mid 30s for the remainder of the week.
Humidity will remain noticeable, generally around 50 – 80%, with the highest levels overnight and during the early morning and lower humidity during the afternoon.
Rain chances are very low. Weather Underground currently forecasts no measurable rain from Wednesday through Tuesday.
Winds should settle considerably following Polo. SailFlow forecasts generally light winds of around 5 – 9 mph (8 – 14 km/h) Wednesday through Monday, with no significant gusts indicated.
Local waters should also calm quickly. SailFlow has waves around 2.5 ft (0.8 m) Wednesday morning, dropping to around 1.4 ft (0.4 m) Wednesday afternoon. Waves are generally forecast around 1 – 2.4 ft (0.3 – 0.7 m) Thursday and Friday and mostly around 1 ft (0.3 m) or less over the weekend.
Hurricane Polo made landfall just east of Guaymas Tuesday and will rapidly weaken as it moves inland, so it should no longer be a significant weather factor for San Carlos this week. National Hurricane Center Tropical Storm Rachel remains active well south of Mexico and is strengthening, but its current track keeps it well south of San Carlos. There is currently no indication that Rachel will affect San Carlos during this forecast period, although we’ll continue monitoring it.

Tuka Sawa Festival de Parrilla y Bacanora, October 3
The 4th Annual Tuka Sawa Festival de Parrilla y Bacanora returns to San Carlos on Saturday, October 3. The popular barbecue and Bacanora festival will be held at Sawari Hotel starting at 2:30pm, with many participating restaurants, live entertainment and family activities.
Dozens of restaurants will serve their signature grilled specialties and regional dishes, with more than 40 different tastings available. The festival will also feature some of Sonora’s best-known Bacanora brands. Bacanora is a traditional agave spirit produced in Sonora and is one of the state’s signature regional products.
Tickets: 700 pesos beginning September 1. Admission includes unlimited food tastings from participating restaurants, including regional dishes such as mango habanero ribs, rib eye aguachile, pork belly, lamb burgers, chicken and more. Tickets are available at Hotel Sawari or by WhatsApp at 52-644-114-0357. This event SOLD OUT last year, so pick up your tickets early.
Drinks are available for purchase separately, including Bacanora, craft and commercial beer, cocktails and soft drinks.
There will be live entertainment throughout the day, starting at 3:00pm with Mark Mulligan followed by Gabriel Felix (5pm – 7pm), The Dudes (7pm – 9;30pm) and El Compa Fito (9.30 – midnight). The festival is family-friendly, with games and activities for children.

Future Events in San Carlos
Hammer Down Fishing Tournament, October 9 – 11
The Hammer Down Fishing Tournament returns to San Carlos from October 9 – 11, continuing a local fishing tradition that began nearly 43 years ago when San Carlos fishing legend Bill Hammer created the original Labor Day Tournament. Now renamed in his honor, the tournament also raises money for local charities.
Registration and a no-host cocktail party will be held at the San Carlos Yacht Club on Friday, October 9 from 5:00pm to 8:00pm. The $250 USD per angler entry fee includes Friday night’s hamburger and fries, an Awards dinner ticket, swag bag, tournament shirt and cap. Anglers can also enter optional cash jackpots.
Fishing takes place Saturday and Sunday from 7:00am to 3:00pm, with boats departing from Marina San Carlos or Marina Real. Competition includes marlin, sailfish, dorado, yellowfin tuna and wahoo. Billfish are strictly catch-and-release, while qualifying dorado, tuna and wahoo must weigh at least 15 pounds.
There’s a particularly big incentive for the overall winning team: Hammer Down is an Offshore World Championship qualifying event. The winners receive an invitation to compete at the World Championship in Quepos, Costa Rica, plus $15,000 USD toward travel expenses.
The weekend concludes with the Awards Dinner at the San Carlos Yacht Club on Sunday at 6:00pm. Fifteen percent of the optional jackpot proceeds goes directly to local charities.

International Billfish Tournament, October 16 – 18
The International Billfish Tournament returns to San Carlos from Friday, October 16 through Sunday, October 18. Founded by Ernesto Zaragoza 79 years ago as the Zaragoza Tournament, this long-running San Carlos tradition combines two days of fishing with support for local charities.
Competition includes Billfish (Marlin and Sailfish), Dorado, Yellowfin Tuna and Wahoo. Billfish are catch-and-release only. Fishing takes place Saturday and Sunday from 7:00am to 3:00pm, with the weigh station at Marina San Carlos open from 2:00pm to 5:00pm. The Awards Dinner is Sunday at the San Carlos Yacht Club, with the bar opening at 5:00pm and dinner at 6:00pm.
Registration is $250 USD per angler and includes the Awards Dinner, tournament shirt and cap, swag bag and Friday night’s hamburger and fries. The Captain’s Package is $85 USD, and additional dinner tickets are $35 USD. Optional jackpots are also available.
Registration and the “No Host” Cocktail Party will take place Friday from 5:00pm to 8:00pm at the San Carlos Yacht Club. Anglers can save time by registering online at the San Carlos Fishing Tournaments website.
One important rule for billfish competitors: releases must be documented using an approved video camera that is checked and synchronized to tournament time during Friday registration. Cell phones and dash cameras cannot be used for release verification.

Fishing Report
The boats all got a good cleaning from Polo. We’ll see soon what the fish thought of the storm and full moon. Be careful, as I saw a lot of debris floating around. Keep an eye on the weather, as storms look to be predicted every four or so days for the next couple of weeks. It’s going to be an interesting Fall.
I really didn’t hear of any offshore reports. I saw that a few bonita were jigged up, along with skipjack and Sierra. The shorelines had a lot of skipjack, snapper, and ladyfish. We had a lot of small rooster fish and bonefish in our nets when we were shrimping. That is some tough work!
The fishermen are coming back, so we’ll be on the water this week. On a side note, get up and hike below Nacapule on either side of the wash. The wildflowers were absolutely amazing!

Oasis has a Sunset Cruise on Saturday evenings. Contact us for the departure time. This 2-hour cruise takes you along the bay of San Francisco beach, hitting the highlights for optimum picture taking and a beautiful sunset. The cost is 600 pesos per person.
For your Personal Charter, we have several sizes for your every need – here are the boats and capacities:

Fishing & Cruising with No Le Hace
The boat No Le Hace is a comfortable, 53 foot yacht is air-conditioned and has a restroom. It leaves from the Iguana Dock (right in front of Marvida Taproom & Kitchen) at Marina San Carlos.
There’s enough room for 30 passengers so come with your family and friends to explore the Sea of Cortez and experience the beautiful San Carlos shoreline, playful dolphins, and the best sunsets in the world. We are also set up for your next fishing trip. Ask us for details.

Kite Club
Live the adventure at the Kite Club, where you will find water activities for the whole family. What a great way for you to connect with the Sea of Cortez, considered the world’s aquarium.
Located on the beautiful soft sands of the popular Algodones beach, Kite Club’s activity center has something for everyone!
We can teach you how to Flyboard, Kitesurf, or Wakeboard, or just rent out equipment to you. At Kite Club we also rent out Jet Skis, single and double kayaks, and paddleboards. And we also offer boat rides. So now is THE time to get in and on the water! And while you are here, enjoy some delicious food and drinks from our Snack Bar. We are waiting to serve you today! Or just come and check out the kiteboarding show while sipping on a refreshing cocktail and enjoying our music at the beach.
Specials: With a minimum consumption of 650 pesos, your 100 pesos entrance fee will be reimbursed by the restaurant.

Castaway Kids Thrift Store: The Castaway Kids Thrift Store is open Thursdays and Saturdays from 9:00am to 12:00pm. Our Student Coordinator, Kristian Vizcaino, is also in the office at the Castaway Kids Education and Donation Center every Wednesday and Thursday between 9:00am and 3:00pm. San Carlos Borromeo Mass schedule: Sunday at 8:00am in English and 11:30am and 5:00pm in Spanish and a Spanish Catholic mass at 9:30am, at Capilla Nuestra Señora de Lourdes, across from Playa Algodones. Also, there is bilingual rosary at 9:30am on Tuesdays in the main church.
