Christmas Bonuses are Due by December 20
Under Mexican law, all employees (including maids, gardeners, cooks) deserve a Christmas bonus (it is called an Aguinaldo). It also creates and keeps a good, healthy relationship with your employees.
Christmas Bonuses are due by December 20, 2025, according to the Ley Federal del Trabajo, Articulo 87. The law states that the minimum bonus must be the equivalent of 15 days of base daily salary.
For part time employees, the equation is: (number of days worked in the year / 365) x 15 x daily salary.
So, for example, a gardener who works 1 day per week and earns 200 pesos, would be entitled to (52 / 365) x 15 x 200 = 428 pesos. To simplify, if you have a worker who works 1 time per week and has worked for you all year, use a multiplier of 2.14 times the salary (using the previous example, 2.14 x 200 = 428 pesos).

Fishing & Birding Reports
San Carlos Fishing Report
Many boats and freezers have had their fill. Fishermen may need to move onto mowing the still flowering bike trails in the desert, cross train some local hikes, or hit the pickleball court. There is more to life than just slaying large yellowtail daily, although we’d love the charters. I was able to handline my first whale last week. We came across a Humpback sitting on the surface just outside the marina. We circled and realized that it was caught on a net hooked onto the Seamounts. We drifted across with the anchor to latch onto the net to pull it up. I could get it to the surface, but not close enough to cut it away from the motors. A friend quickly returned on his panga to help. Before I could coordinate someone to safely pull up the net and be ready to reverse the boat, my experienced abalone diver friend jumped in and swam down 15 – 20 feet to the whale. A few cuts and it was completely free. While we retrieved 3 – 400 feet of net, my buddy returned and was thanked by a flick of the tail in front of them. Not my first whale entanglement, but this one was a complete success. I’m sure we could have made a complete media spectacle and some YouTube coin, but the tired possibly pregnant female was on her way! by Bryan Replogle, Team Margarita Sportfishing, repsilon@aol.com |
San Carlos Birding Report
My Bird of the Week is the Least Flycatcher, one of the rarest birds we have seen in San Carlos. This is a bird that migrates through the midwest and eastern part of the US to breed in all of Canada and the northern parts of the east and midwest US. It winters along the Gulf of Mexico and west coast of Mexico south of Mazatlán and in Central America. It has never been seen in our area but we recently spotted one at the El Palmar settlement ponds and Rancho Nacapule. My theory is that the severe storms up north caused at least two to veer to the west and continue their migration south. The Least Flycatcher is one of the grayish olive flycatchers in the Empidonax group, often referred to as Empids. Empids can be very similar and I thought we were seeing a Western Flycatcher until I was working on my photos at home. The experts on the Facebook group What’s This Bird confirmed its ID as Least. Its name in Mexico is Papamoscas Chico. The birding group will meet this coming Thursday, December 18 at 8:00am at the Mariscos Esterito Cafe located at the end of San Carlos Bay near the fish camp and across from the Red Cross station. You do not need to be an experienced birder to join our group. If you do not know anything except that you want to know more, our group will help you learn. If you are an experienced birder and just want to know other birders, then join us and share your knowledge. Please bring your water, sun and insect protection, and a chair. And your binoculars, of course. Outings last until around 11:00am and we go out to lunch afterwards. If you have any questions, sightings to share, or comments, please feel free to contact me at maryltannehill@yahoo.com. I wish you happy birding wherever you are. by Mary Tannehill; photo by Laura Flores Sánchez |

We had 12 for our outing last week and headed to the docks in Empalme. It is always tricky to predict the perfect tide for viewing the birds and I was a little off so the tide was too high for really close viewing. Fortunately, most shorebirds are medium sized and we were able to spot Marbled Godwits, Whimbrels, Black-necked Stilts, and numerous Gulls and Cormorants. We had 27 species total. As always, we went to Cocina de Rita restaurant in San Jose afterwards and sat in their new outside patio area in the back.
