A hidden gem among the rocks is spotted: Mammillaria boolii. This cactus is not only endemic to Sonora, it is only found in the area of Guaymas and San Carlos. It is very small and goes unnoticed buried in rocky soils, until with a good rain it swells and rises above the ground, and in a few days its pink-lavender flower appears, often larger than the cactus itself, by Rada SC
The ex-ARM Ángel Ortiz Monasterio has a new mission beneath the Sea of Cortez. The 67-metre former Mexican Navy patrol vessel was deliberately sunk off San Carlos this week, becoming the 14th structure in the Sistema Arrecifal Artificial Sonorense.
The ship will provide new habitat and refuge for marine life while adding another attraction for San Carlos’ growing diving and underwater tourism scene. The artificial reef system already supports more than 52,000 marine organisms representing 37 species.

San Carlos Weather Outlook for the Week
Another hot, humid and mostly dry week is forecast for San Carlos, with sunshine mixed with periods of cloud. Daytime highs will range from 34 – 36°C (93 – 97°F) and overnight lows from 29 – 31°C (84 – 88°F). The humidity will make afternoons feel considerably hotter than the thermometer suggests: current apparent-temperature forecasts indicate the hottest periods could feel like roughly 44 – 48°C (111 – 119°F), particularly during the first half of the week. Weather Underground currently forecasts 0 mm of measurable rain each day, although brief precipitation probabilities occasionally rise into the low range, so an isolated shower cannot be completely ruled out.
Humidity: Expect another muggy week, with humidity generally lowest during the afternoon and climbing substantially overnight and during the early morning. Current forecasts support humidity reaching around 80% or higher during the more humid periods.
Wind: SailFlow forecasts generally light to moderate winds. Wednesday should see winds around 10 – 11 mph, with gusts up to 14 mph. Thursday ranges from 5 – 11 mph, Friday 5 – 6 mph, Saturday 7 – 10 mph, Sunday around 9 mph, and Monday 4 – 11 mph. The supplied SailFlow forecast ends Monday, so no Tuesday marine wind value has been estimated.
Waves: Marine conditions should remain fairly calm overall. SailFlow forecasts waves around 1.2 ft (0.4 m) Wednesday; 0.8 – 1.2 ft (0.2–0.4 m) Thursday; 2.0 – 2.5 ft (0.6 – 0.8 m) Friday; 1.0 – 1.3 ft (0.3 – 0.4 m) Saturday; around 1.1 ft (0.3 m) Sunday; and 0.9 – 1.4 ft (0.3–0.4 m) Monday. Friday currently looks like the roughest marine day of the week, although waves remain modest. Tuesday marine conditions are not being estimated because they aren’t included in the supplied SailFlow forecast.
Monsoon and Rain Outlook
The Mexican monsoon remains active across northwestern Mexico, but the current point forecast for San Carlos is considerably drier than the broader regional pattern. CONAGUA/SMN’s latest national forecast continues to identify monsoon-related showers and thunderstorms across northwestern Mexico, while the Weather Underground forecast for Guaymas/San Carlos shows no measurable rainfall through Tuesday.
That doesn’t eliminate the possibility of an isolated monsoon thunderstorm developing nearby, but widespread or sustained rain is not currently forecast for San Carlos.
Eastern Pacific Tropical Outlook
There are currently two named tropical storms in the Eastern Pacific — Iselle and Julio — but neither is a direct threat to San Carlos.
Tropical Storm Iselle is well west of Baja California and is moving west-northwestward. The National Hurricane Center expects Iselle to gradually weaken during the next few days. Swells associated with the storm are affecting portions of the Pacific-facing coast of Baja California, rather than the Sea of Cortez.
Tropical Storm Julio is also well offshore southwest of Baja California and poses no threat to land. The National Hurricane Center expects Julio to be absorbed into Iselle’s larger circulation.
For San Carlos, the important point is that no tropical cyclone is currently forecast to directly affect the area during the coming week. The combination of intense heat, high humidity and the continuing monsoon pattern is more relevant locally than either tropical storm at this time.

Future Events in San Carlos
Tuka Sawa Festival de Parrilla y Bacanora, October 3
The 4th Annual Tuka Sawa Festival de Parrilla y Bacanora returns to San Carlos on Saturday, October 3. The popular barbecue and Bacanora festival will be held at Sawari Hotel starting at 2:30pm, with many participating restaurants, live entertainment and family activities.
Dozens of restaurants will serve their signature grilled specialties and regional dishes, with more than 40 different tastings available. The festival will also feature some of Sonora’s best-known Bacanora brands. Bacanora is a traditional agave spirit produced in Sonora and is one of the state’s signature regional products.
Tickets: 500 pesos through August 31; 700 pesos beginning September 1. Admission includes unlimited food tastings from participating restaurants, including regional dishes such as mango habanero ribs, rib eye aguachile, pork belly, lamb burgers, chicken and more. Tickets are available at Hotel Sawari or by WhatsApp at 52-644-114-0357. This event SOLD OUT last year, so pick up your tickets early.
Drinks are available for purchase separately, including Bacanora, craft and commercial beer, cocktails and soft drinks.
There will be live entertainment throughout the day, starting at 3:00pm with Mark Mulligan followed by more music including The Dudes and other special bands. The festival is family-friendly, with games and activities for children.

Diving Report
There has been no change in water temperatures (89 – 90 degrees) locally or at Isla San Pedro Nolasco from the last few weeks. And visibility is also unchanged — 20 – 30 feet locally and 60+ at the island.
This past weekend I joined a group of divers from El Mar Diving Center in Mesa for three dives at the island…The Caveran, Lighthouse North, and Little Waterfall. All three sites had a variety of fish life, with an abundance of juveniles of many species. Often fish in their juvenile or initial phase have completely different coloration from their adult or terminal phase. Two examples are shown below.
A Beaubrummel (pictured left) is a small, shy fish in the damselfish family. Normally it is about 3 – 5 inches in size. Similar to the Cortez damselfish in its brown coloration of the body, the beaubrummel differs by having fins that stand out with a bright yellow color. It blends in quite nicely among the rocks and algae. Not so for the juvenile…it is two-toned, bright blue on the upper half of the body and bright yellow on the lower half. When they flash out from their hiding spots, they are very visible and very striking in color.
Panama graysbys (pictured right) are a mid-size fish in the sea bass family. Their maximum size is about 12 inches. As an adult they can be grayish to greenish brown with many orange dots in the head area. Along their sides they have 9 to 10 dark bars. But as a juvenile they are bluish with faint bars from the pectoral fin to the tail and orangish on the top of the body and first part of the dorsal fin. They also have a very distinct white line that runs from the tip of the nose to just between the eyes on the forehead.
There are many more juvenile-to-adults that are seen in the San Carlos area besides these two. Some families that have the greatest color changes as they mature are Parrotfishes and Wrasses. It is fun to try to guess which babies belong to which adults. A good online source for Fish ID of this area is put out by the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute.

Look Up! A Partial Lunar Eclipse is coming Thursday Night
Skywatchers in San Carlos and Guaymas have a good reason to look up Thursday night, August 27. A deep partial lunar eclipse will take place as the full moon passes through Earth’s shadow — and from our part of Sonora, almost the entire eclipse will be visible.
This is an unusually deep partial eclipse. At its peak, about 96% of the moon will be inside Earth’s dark central shadow, leaving only a thin portion directly illuminated by the Sun. Much of the eclipsed moon may take on a coppery or reddish-orange color, giving it an appearance similar to a total lunar eclipse.
The moon will rise in the east-southeast around 6:45pm, with the early, subtle penumbral phase already underway. The more obvious partial eclipse begins at approximately 7:33pm.
Maximum eclipse will occur at about 9:12pm Thursday, when the moon will be roughly 28° above the horizon. The partial phase ends at approximately 10:51pm, with the final faint penumbral shading disappearing around 12:01am Friday.
For the early part of the show, choose a spot with an unobstructed view toward the east and southeast. As the evening progresses, the moon will climb higher into the southeastern sky.
No telescope, special glasses or other equipment is required — lunar eclipses are completely safe to watch with the naked eye. Binoculars can make the changing colors and the edge of Earth’s shadow even more impressive.
The weather may cooperate for Thursday night’s eclipse. The current forecast for San Carlos calls for partly cloudy to mostly clear skies during the evening, with little or no chance of rain during the main viewing hours. Some passing clouds could occasionally obscure the moon, but at this point conditions look promising for seeing the eclipse from San Carlos and Guaymas.

Oasis has a Sunset Cruise on Saturday evenings. Contact us for the departure time. This 2-hour cruise takes you along the bay of San Francisco beach, hitting the highlights for optimum picture taking and a beautiful sunset. The cost is 600 pesos per person.
For your Personal Charter, we have several sizes for your every need – here are the boats and capacities:

* La Vikina: 6 adults and 2 children
All of our boats are equipped with restrooms, lounge chairs and tables, snack & drinks bar, music/ Bluetooth for you to listen to your favorite music. For your safety, the boats have life preservers and first aid kits. Our Captains are certified and the staff are bilingual. Oasis and Oasis II have paddle boards, floats, and marine mats available for you or the kids to play with when anchored.

Fishing & Cruising with No Le Hace
The boat No Le Hace is a comfortable, 53 foot yacht is air-conditioned and has a restroom. It leaves from the Iguana Dock (right in front of Marvida Taproom & Kitchen) at Marina San Carlos.
There’s enough room for 30 passengers so come with your family and friends to explore the Sea of Cortez and experience the beautiful San Carlos shoreline, playful dolphins, and the best sunsets in the world. We are also set up for your next fishing trip. Ask us for details.

Kite Club
Live the adventure at the Kite Club, where you will find water activities for the whole family. What a great way for you to connect with the Sea of Cortez, considered the world’s aquarium.
Located on the beautiful soft sands of the popular Algodones beach, Kite Club’s activity center has something for everyone!
We can teach you how to Flyboard, Kitesurf, or Wakeboard, or just rent out equipment to you. At Kite Club we also rent out Jet Skis, single and double kayaks, and paddleboards. And we also offer boat rides. So now is THE time to get in and on the water! And while you are here, enjoy some delicious food and drinks from our Snack Bar. We are waiting to serve you today! Or just come and check out the kiteboarding show while sipping on a refreshing cocktail and enjoying our music at the beach.
Specials: With a minimum consumption of 650 pesos, your 100 pesos entrance fee will be reimbursed by the restaurant.
Over the course of the year, we have lots of additional activities such as our bonfire nights and boarding competitions. Explore the freedom of the wind and the sea at Kite Club! We are San Carlos’ Premier Scuba Diving Center, providing Adventure since 1988. We offer certification courses (Open Water; Advanced; Diver Specialties such as navigation, underwater digi-photo, night, deep, and wreck diving) representing SSI and PADI Training.

Castaway Kids Thrift Store: The Castaway Kids Thrift Store is open Thursdays and Saturdays from 9:00am to 12:00pm. Our Student Coordinator, Kristian Vizcaino, is also in the office at the Castaway Kids Education and Donation Center every Wednesday and Thursday between 9:00am and 3:00pm. We also continue to expand the items that we are featuring on the shopping page on our website.
Sports, Outdoor Activities & Clubs:
Pickleball: There’s open play for members at the San Carlos Pickleball Club Courts from Monday – Saturday mornings and plenty of organized play to choose from. For more information, including membership, click here.

San Carlos Community Church: We are an international and non-denominational church. We have public worship services on Sundays at 9:00am. All are welcome to join us.
San Carlos Borromeo Mass schedule: Sunday at 8:00am in English and 11:30am and 5:00pm in Spanish and a Spanish Catholic mass at 9:30am, at Capilla Nuestra Señora de Lourdes, across from Playa Algodones. Also, there is bilingual rosary at 9:30am on Tuesdays in the main church.
