More than 700 bikers participated in the San Carlos Beach and Desert Rally this past weekend.
The community came out in full force on Sunday to support Seguro y Sano – Sana y Protegida’s run & walk “to End Domestic Violence,” by Gabriela Bauchwitz. Tony Smith captured the middle photo of the San Carlos Pickleball Club, who proudly took first place for the highest participation with an impressive 103 registrants. A huge Thank You to all donors, organizers, and participants.
The Mardi Gras event organized by Rotary San Carlos was held with great success thanks to the participation of the community and the strong interest of those who joined in support of the scholarship program for students from the Ranchitos community. SBPA Luncheon: February 25
Make sure to get your ticket today. Individual tickets are available for 700 pesos which includes lunch, entertainment, a dog walk, and a wonderful time. This is a great way to meet new people while supporting a great cause as each ticket you buy helps to support approximately one surgery. El Gran Tour de Guaymas – San Carlos bike tour, March 1

Rotary Carne Asada, March 14
This event will be held at the Ranchitos Primary School (turn off Tetakawi Blvd at Coralitos, go past Athleticlub San Carlos and follow the signs). There will be special musical and dance presentations in beautiful costumes including folklorico dancing and mariachi music. An authentic Mexican carne asada meal will be prepared and served by the parents of the children who attend this school. The bar opens at 11:00am and that includes the famous San Carlos Rotary Margaritas and Bloody Mary’s along with other refreshments. Don’t miss out on this special event! Come for the food (Carne Asada), entertainment, drinks and fun. It’s the cutest show in town. The food is tasty and plentiful and there is excellent entertainment. But the show stoppers are always the brightly costumed students from the Ranchitos school who perform several traditional dances. The cost is 500 pesos per person. Fishing & Birding Reports
San Carlos Fishing Report
We took a quick trip to Lake Oviachic and found a decent amount of water. The water was warm and the bass are probably going to spawn on this lunar cycle. They were all nice and fat, taking a variety of baits in 5 – 9 feet of water. The Island has been producing some good bites for large yellowtail. A number of them are roaming the coast from La Manga to past the fish farm. I haven’t heard of any good reports from in close or down to Haystack. Shoreline fishing seems pretty quiet, but we did find decent fishing for calicos. It should be a great week around the quarter moon. by Bryan Replogle, Team Margarita Sportfishing, repsilon@aol.com |
San Carlos Birding Report
We had 18 for our outing last week and headed to the fishing docks at the Empalme estuary just across the causeway between Guaymas and Empalme. This is a great place to see shorebirds when the tide is right: not too high and not too low. We tried it a few weeks ago but the tide was too high and the wind strong and cold. This time it was perfect. We could see the birds easily and the weather was cool but sunny and calm. We ended the day with 41 different species but the highlight for many was seen just after arriving. In the tiny lagoon beside the estuary we spotted 30 Roseate Spoonbills clustered together in the early morning light. It was like a giant bouquet of dark pink roses. We had various gulls, herons, egrets, Willets, Marbled Godwits, tiny little sandpipers – both Western and Least, Brown and White Pelicans, Double-crested and Neotropic Cormorants, and the tiny Mangrove Swallow. We finished the outing as we always do when we go to the Empalme estuary: at the wonderful Cocina de Rita restaurant in San Jose. My Bird of the Week is that tiny Mangrove Swallow. I think that Swallows are one of the most difficult birds to identify. That is because they are almost always FLYING. Our lovely flycatchers perch, giving us good views, and then dart out after their prey. Birds like warblers forage in the trees and can be tricky but we can usually get a look as they move from branch to branch. Swallows, however, fly and fly and catch insects while diving, looping, and soaring upwards. The Mangrove Swallow is no different. It’s a relatively small swallow and is not found in the US or Canada. It is a common resident from Mexico to south Panama, predominantly along the coast (including the Sea of Cortez), and becomes rarer moving inland. Like its name would suggest, it is associated with areas of mangroves but may be found near rivers, lakes, ponds, marshes, coastal beaches, and wet meadows. Its Spanish name in Mexico is Golondrina Manglera. While Swallows are usually in the air, they do occasionally perch on wires or posts and that is the best time for a good view and a chance to see their species characteristics. We have seen the Mangrove on posts at the El Palmar and Country Club settlement ponds; but, it is a rare occurrence. Although the Empalme estuary is our most likely place to spot it, we have been disappointed the last few visits so I was thrilled when two perched on the wires not far from where we were sitting. The Mangrove Swallow when not in the bright light closely resembles the Violet-green Swallow which is common here. But the Violet has a comma-like white mark on the face and the Mangrove’s upper face is dark except for two tiny white streaks that extend vertically above the bill. Both the Violet and Mangrove have white patches on the rump which easily distinguish them from other swallows. The Mangroves’ patch is larger. In the light is where this little bird literally shines. The color is a brilliant turquoise / teal color unlike anything I have seen in any other birds around here. It reminds me of a sequined dress. During the breeding season, they are socially monogamous and breeding pairs are highly territorial of their nests. They nest in crevices in partially submerged snags and logs. The best viewing of this little sparkler is right where we were at the fishing docks at the Empalme estuary just after you cross the causeway. Look for them sitting on the wires above the road or, if you are very lucky, on that low post in the water just south of the little chapel at the end of the docks. The birding group will meet this coming Thursday, February 26 at 8:00am at the Mariscos Esterito Cafe located at the end of San Carlos Bay near the fish camp and across from the Red Cross station. You do not need to be an experienced birder to join our group. If you do not know anything except that you want to know more, our group will help you learn. If you are an experienced birder and just want to know other birders, then join us and share your knowledge. Please bring your water, sun and insect protection, and a chair. And your binoculars, of course. Outings last until around 11:00am and we go out to lunch afterwards. This Saturday, February 28, the whole community is invited to help. Volunteering is easy! Just meet a the designated spot and we give you bags, gloves and trash grabbers. It usually takes about an hour but you can come for any amount of time. It’s a great way to start the weekend! We will meet at 8:00am just before the entrance to the Soggy Peso (see red Pin on map). CRRIFS: Our Aviary is Fully Booked
Paquito was released last fall but since he arrived when he was only two days old and all alone, he got very comfortable at the Wildlife Rescue Center and wanted to stay. Rocco was rescued when he was just one month old. We found him underneath a car in Playa Blanca. Staff fed him with small syringe and then a bottle. Three months later, he has been eating on his own and has good instincts to survive in the wild. We are planning a release soon. The aviary was built with funds raised from the Dancing with the Stars 2024 fundraiser, which covered about half of the costs. Last month, we had the crew from Dancing with the Stars and Colibris come out to tour the aviary. They were very impressed with our facility, and we couldn’t have done it without their help. San Carlos offers outstanding sport fishing year-round and our Team Margarita charter boats can adapt to whatever fishing style you prefer. We practice “catch and release” on all billfish, but other varieties can be excellent food for the table. Light tackle or fly-fishing enthusiast? We can set you up!

The boat No Le Hace is a comfortable, 53 foot yacht is air-conditioned and has a restroom. It leaves from the Iguana Dock (right in front of Marvida Taproom & Kitchen) at Marina San Carlos.

Rescate Treasures Thrift Store: Open Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 9:00am – 1:30pm. Rescate Treasures is seeking donations – small appliances, furniture, clothing, tools – any and all donations. Thank You!
SBPA’s Book Shoppe & CRRIFS gift shop. The shop is located between HammerHead’s and Barracuda Bob’s. Open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00am – 2:00pm. Please do not leave donations outside the store. Please drop them off inside when we’re open. Learn more about SBPA (providing spay & neuter services for local animals) and CRRIFS (local turtle conservation and wildlife rescue program).
Castaway Kids Thrift Store: The Castaway Kids Thrift Store is open Thursdays and Saturdays from 9:00am to 12:00pm. Our Student Coordinator, Kristian Vizcaino, is also in the office at the Castaway Kids Education and Donation Center every Wednesday and Thursday between 9:00am and 3:00pm. We also continue to expand the items that we are featuring on the shopping page on our website.
Tecalai Library is open to the public every Friday from 9:00am to noon. The library operates on a leave-one, take-one basis or you can make a donation.
Sports, Outdoor Activities & Clubs:
Pickleball: There’s open play for members at the San Carlos Pickleball Club Courts from Monday – Saturday mornings and plenty of organized play to choose from. For more information, including membership, click here.
Monday Yoga at Loma del Mar. Joanne Hader is leading a yoga class on Mondays at 10:00am at the Loma del Mar palapa. It is open to everyone. The cost is 100 pesos and all the money raised goes to charity. More info here.
Everyone is invited to join in the volleyball, badminton and bocce ball games every Wednesday from 4:00pm – 6:00pm. The courts are 400 yards north of Bahia Delfin Condos – turn left at the Jayco trailer.
Club Deportivo
- Bridge. Mondays at 12:30pm.
- Quilting group. Tuesdays, 9:00am. For more info contact JoAnne McVaigh at 622-122-2156.
- Ping Pong. Tuesdays from 3:00pm – 4:30pm.
- Bingo. Tuesdays, 6:00pm. Cash prizes & free popcorn. No door entry fee.
- Ceramics. Mondays and Thursdays from 9:00am – 1:00pm.
- Quilting and sewing session. Wednesdays from 9:30am to 2:30pm. There’s no one needs to sign up, just bring your quilting, sewing, needlework or craft project and spread out on the tables. Sewing machines and ironing board will be available. Hosted by Joanne McVagh.
La Liga de Arte; the oldest art league in San Carlos. The Art League is a casual, judgment-free place where artists from beginner to advanced of all mediums are welcome to share and enjoy information and techniques. Meet at the Tecalai Clubhouse (Beltrones KM 8.5) on Mondays at 9:00am.
Free Spanish & English Classes. These are free to all attendees. All levels welcome. Times and Locations:

Church:
San Carlos Community Church: We are an international and non-denominational church. We have public worship services on Sundays at 9:00am. All are welcome to join us.
San Carlos Borromeo Mass schedule: Sunday at 8:00am in English and 11:30am and 5:00pm in Spanish and a Spanish Catholic mass at 9:30am, at Capilla Nuestra Señora de Lourdes, across from Playa Algodones. Also, there is bilingual rosary at 9:30am on Tuesdays in the main church.
Agape Christian Fellowship. A vibrant, non-denominational fellowship serving the diverse and international community of San Carlos with God’s love. Weekly Sunday worship service 10:00am. 161 Paseo Dichoso, San Carlos. Find us on FaceBook. All are welcome.
