Fishing, Birding & Diving Reports
San Carlos Fishing Report
Arturo had clients out on Monday for nine fish caught. The yellowtail are staying nice and big. It should be another solid week of fishing into the quarter moon. Seas look nice, but may be picking up after Christmas. For those looking for a Christmas miracle, the Dorado, tuna, and marlin may be only 15 – 20 miles out. San Carlos Birding Report
We had 12 for our last outing and went to the settlement ponds in the newish but not very developed Rincón del Ensueño. We have been going here for years and for years it had no name so we just called it the new development ponds and still do most of the time. It is a great place with lots of space and shade. We always enjoy watching the Least Grebes. All but one of the chicks we observed in late October have lost their striped plumage and now look like the adults. We had Blue-winged Teals, a lovely Redhead duck, a couple of Lesser Scaup and Ruddy Ducks in the ponds. Outside the water we had Ash-throated Flycatchers, a Belted Kingfisher, Sora (inside and outside the water) and our highlight of the day: a Virginia Rail. It is not a rare bird here but it is rarely seen. We finished the day with 27 species and went to lunch at the excellent Mazateño restaurant. My Bird of the Week is the Cedar Waxwing. I spotted the one in the photo at Rincón del Ensueño settlement ponds not on our birding day but the day after. Cedar Waxwings on range maps are not considered rare here and they winter in a large swath of the US and all of Mexico. In the US in areas where they don’t winter, they live year round. However, range maps can be wrong and here they are rarely seen. My last sighting was in June of 2022. They specialize in eating fruit, especially in the summer, and can survive on fruit alone for several months. The tip of the tail is a beautiful yellow and looks like it was dipped in paint. If you spot a Cedar Waxwing with an orange tail tip, it is because the bird has picked up red pigment from an introduced species of Honeysuckle. If the bird eats enough of this plant while the tail feather is growing, the tip of the feather will be orange instead of yellow. Because they eat so much fruit, allaboutbirds.org reports that they occasionally become intoxicated or even die when they devour overripe fruit that has started to ferment and produce alcohol. In the winter, Cedar Waxwings glean insects from vegetation or fly out from exposed perches and snatch them from the air. My bird in the photo was probably trying to do the latter as it was perched high up in a tree at the edge of one of the ponds. The birding group will meet this coming Thursday, December 25, even though it is Christmas Day, at 8:00am at the Mariscos Esterito Cafe located at the end of San Carlos Bay near the fish camp and across from the Red Cross station. You do not need to be an experienced birder to join our group. If you do not know anything except that you want to know more, our group will help you learn. If you are an experienced birder and just want to know other birders, then join us and share your knowledge. Please bring your water, sun and insect protection, and a chair. And your binoculars, of course. Outings last until around 11:00 and we go out to breakfast / lunch afterwards but not this week since it is Christmas Day and restaurants will not be open. If you have any questions, sightings to share, or comments, please feel free to contact me at maryltannehill@yahoo.com. I wish you Happy Birding and Wonderful Holidays wherever you are. by Mary Tannehill; photo by Laura Flores Sánchez |
Diving Report
The cooler waters can bring in different species to enjoy. On the Ex-Santos, four different kinds of nudibranchs were seen, including a Mexican dancer, a California dorid and a Trinchesia sp (pictured left). Along the railings of the wreck hiding in holes or cracks, blennies and gobies, octopus and a variety of crabs were found. Bay blennies (pictured right) are rarely seen out of their hiding homes, but they have a very colorful face and eyes that are watching the diver’s every move. The Ex-Santos has been underwater the longest and is now covered in all kinds of beautiful organisms attached to the boat itself. It has also become home to a large variety of fish species that patrol the boat, some in large schools like, Graybar grunts, Threebanded butterflyfish and Cortez rainbow wrasse. Tres Marias, three large vertical rock formations, has lost one of its “Marias” to a storm a while back. Now it is only Dos Marias! It is between the wrecks and Piedras Pintas along the shore, “under” the Tetas. It is not a frequently visited dive site, but it has rocky and sandy areas that make it nice to see a great variety of fish and invertebrates. In the sandy patches Cortez and Reef stingrays, Bullseye pufferfish and Spotted sandbass were seen. And, on the rocky reef areas Blue and yellow chromis, Green and Argus eels, Bluechin parrotfish and many kinds of wrasses were spotted. A Green / Black Sea turtle did a swim by the divers checking them out. No need to stop diving in the winter, just add a little thicker wetsuit. If you don’t have one or didn’t bring your dive gear, El Mar Diving Center in San Carlos has some for rent. Stop by to check their schedule for upcoming dive trips and enjoy finding new adventures underwater in the winter. by Annette Felix and Feliza Rios, El Mar Diving Center; photos and dive info by Pat Hartshorne |
