This Week’s Special Events
Semana Santa, April 13 – 21
Semana Santa, or Holy Week, goes from Palm Sunday (April 13, 2025) to Easter (Monday, April 21, 2025). It is Mexico’s second most important holiday season, after Christmas. School children have a two week holiday, and many companies close-up shop during that time so that their employees can spend time with their families. For some, it is time to spend in church, but many Mexicans will also take advantage of the holiday to go on vacation. And, for their vacation, half of Mexico flocks to the beaches looking to play in the surf, camp on the beach, spend time with family and friends and to dance, drink and have a fiesta. Semana Santa San Carlos: By day the beaches are overflowing with tourists and locals alike, flying kites, swimming and soaking up the beautiful weather — while enjoying fun in the sun and a couple of cervezas. If you need to drive anywhere, this is the time to do it, because by late afternoon, the roads are bumper to bumper with trucks, cars, ATVs and motor bikes cruising up and down the strip. The vehicles are overflowing with people. Whole families ride on ATVs. And, speakers and plastic Tecate chairs in the back of pick-up trucks convert them into parties on wheels.
Vendors line the street selling everything from souvenirs and sunglasses to local crafts. The mouth-watering smell of BBQ wafts through the air. All the local food specialties are available, from ceviche to carne asada. Yes, Semana Santa is noisy and crowded and the traffic can be horrible, but it’s a fantastic Mexican celebration that should be experienced at least once. You will not regret or soon forget sharing in the excitement of a whole town celebrating together. |

CRRIFS: Seagull Release & Juvenile Whale Update
We were planning a semi-public release for her last weekend. Before we could let everyone know, Afortunada decided she could not wait. She sneaked out and was ready to leave. Her feathers were healed, and she flew away. We realize we need to prioritize a security fence that will cover our four medium-sized cages, the area where Afortunada was located, to prevent these situations. Juvenile Whale Update: While several people posted about the juvenile gray whale that was close in and looked in trouble, please realize that this is their natural feeding behavior. Adults can feed in 2 meters of water and juveniles in less than that. She probably is ok. Remember 1) Do not scare her or push her to deeper waters. 2) Keep your dogs on a leash and away from the whale. Click here for a video of similar behavior from a whale in Puget Sound. As always, if you see any wildlife in distress, please call or text CRRIFS on WhatsApp at 622-152-9934. CRRIFS – We are much more than turtles! Center for Rescue, Rehabilitation, Investigation of Fauna Silvestre (Wildlife). |
The Fariseos in San Carlos
There are two groups of Fariseos: 1) the Yaqui that come from the small towns along the Yaqui River in Sinaloa, and 2) the Mayo that come from the towns along the Mayo River in Sonora. Based on their costumes, the ones in San Carlos pictured are the Mayo Fariseos. They are dressed in masks made of goatskin. Their shirts are made of carrizo (a type of bamboo reed). Mayo Fariseos are covered with blankets and often in white robes. They have leg bracelets made of dried butterfly cocoons and filled with small stones that make noise while walking and dancing around San Carlos. They wear Huaraches sandals and carry wooden sticks, rattles and drums. Sometimes their hands are painted red to represent the blood of Christ. So, with this costume, they go from place to place, and city to city, dancing for money in order to buy food for themselves during their 40 day travels, and to use to celebrate Resurrection Sunday in their hometown. On that Sunday, they also burn the mask. The unique thing about this ritual is that they never speak when they are traveling about. They wear a rosary and place the small wooden cross in their mouths, to remind them of the cultural and religious significance of their journey. So the next time you see the Fariseos coming around, why not give them a donation and wish them well. |
Fishing & Birding Reports
Fishing Report
The yellowtail were tough at the Island, but bit at times. There are a few along the coast, but the seaweed is everywhere. One 20 pound fish gave me quite the battle on a light outfit. I woke up one morning to find a huge school of mullet and then 4″ anchovies swim by. They netted a bunch of 7 – 9 pound Sierra , which would have been quite the fight from shore. We found some great calico bites, with many 4 – 5 pound fish. I saw one small Mako, a sea ray, lots of interesting jellyfish, caught one squid, and we were treated to a dozen breaches by a young Humpback. There’s lots of life out there as the seasons change. by Bryan Replogle, Team Margarita Sportfishing, repsilon@aol.com |
Birding Report
We had seven in our group last week and headed to the Rincón del Ensueño development located just before the paved road ends and the dirt road to La Manga begins. I picked these settlement ponds because we had spotted a Least Grebe chick on the back of a parent two days prior. We also saw two eggs still in the nest and thought there might be a couple of additional babies. No luck but we had great views of the one chick. It can swim but prefers to ride on the back of a parent. It is still being fed. In addition, we had good views of a pair of Great Kiskadees and more difficult viewing of a mixed flock of warbler migrating through our area on their way north. The group included Orange-crowned, Wilson’s, Townsend’s and a MacGillvray’s. We had 31 species in total. Afterwards we went to The Little Cactus Restaurant. My Bird of the Week is the Hooded Oriole. The Spanish name in Mexico is Calendria Dorso Negro Menor. This is the most commonly seen Oriole in San Carlos and they are now arriving from their winter residency in southern Mexico. They will breed here during the summer. It is not unknown to have small resident populations that have become habituated (used to humans being around) stay in an area year round. This used to be the situation here in San Carlos but in recent years the winter resident population has disappeared. Hooded Orioles begin their northern migration in mid-March and we are now spotting males and females in various locations around San Carlos. I took my photo near the parking lot of Delfin Condos. They will start building their nests soon. They hang them from the undersides of palm fronds. Orioles are members of the blackbird family (Icteridae), along with meadowlarks and cowbirds. Birds in this family all have super strong, long, and pointed bills. They use these bills to get at food other birds can’t reach. They can pry apart thick patches of grass, open up flowers, enlarge holes in tree bark, and dig into ripe fruits for their juice. Or partake at your hummingbird feeders. Hooded Orioles love to drink nectar from hummingbird feeders and it is amusing to watch them try and drink while precariously hanging onto a feeder designed for tiny hummingbirds. Amusing that is until their heavy bodies cause the feeder to swing and the sticky liquid goes all over your patio (speaking from experience here.) You can also attract them to your yard by attaching a halved orange to a post or platform. Males can be identified by their brilliant yellow plumage and black face and throat. Females are a drabber yellow with a grayish back. The birding group will not be deterred by Semana Santa festivities and will meet this coming Thursday, April 17 at 8:00 am at the Mariscos Esterito Cafe located at the end of San Carlos Bay near the fish camp and across from the Red Cross station. We will, however, skip lunch so people can avoid crowds in getting home. You do not need to be an experienced birder to join our group. If you do not know anything except that you want to know more, our group will help you learn. If you are an experienced birder and just want to know other birders, then join us and share your knowledge. Please bring your water, sun and insect protection, and a chair. And your binoculars, of course. Outings last until around 11:00am. If you have any questions, sightings to share, or comments, please feel free to contact me at maryltannehill@yahoo.com. I wish you Happy Birding wherever you are. by Mary Tannehill |
