Visiting Juvenile Grey Whale

The juvenile gray whale (Eschrichtius robustus) that is visiting San Carlos is looking for food and a quiet place to stay.

This species is protected by law.

Please, don’t chase her, disturb, or follow her.

That can cause her stress, lost energy, even her death.

Here are some guidelines for viewing the whale.

CRRIFS is working with the authorities to help protect her from boats and kayaks.

CRRIFS: Meet Dawn & Diego

CRRIFS volunteers are having fun with our new guests, the greasy pelicans. Meet Dawn and Diego. When Dawn arrived, we thought she was the feisty one as she fought her bath and took a bit to adjust. She is still not eating very much, which is probably due to the oil she ingested that is slowly leaving her body. She is very calm compared to Diego. She had a few abrasions, so we are waiting for them to heal to release her.

Diego came to us very quiet and reserved. Now that he is clean from the sardine oil, he is very feisty and scratched a staff member. They were moved a few days ago to new larger cages with small wading pools which they are using for grooming. Diego is eating all his fish and sardines and looking for more. Both had another bath this week as they are still a bit greasy.

They eat 1.5 grams of fish or sardines a day. Thank you to Claudio in Empalme and the Bahia fisherman for helping us with extra fish. If you have extra fish, please consider donating some, or making a cash donation to help feed these birds. We are happy to give you a tour of our facility and introduce you to Diego and Dawn. Please call or text us on WhatsApp at 622-152-9934 to make sure we are there and not out on a rescue call.

Fishing & Birding Reports

Fishing Report

The water is starting to turn over. I have seen readings from 58 to 65 F degrees. There are lots of jellyfish and brown water, to clearer water at times. The squid are out there, and I still saw dorado in the reports far to the south. Mature fish are swimming around looking for the action.

The yellowtail seemed absent in close, but found themselves at the Island for the weekend. Most of the action was in tight to the rocks trolling, yet there was a decent bite for those jigging. The largest fish were pushing 23 pounds. I haven’t seen a fish on the surface lately, but that should change The bottomfishing has been decent, so you should find something to eat. We’ve got nice forecasts and the possibility of whale sightings out there!

Birding Report

Hola Birding Enthusiasts,

Our group had dwindled to 8 this past week and we went to the Capilla Nuestra Señora de Lourdes on the west side of San Carlos. I had made arrangements with the caretaker in advance as the chapel and its grounds are closed except for a Sunday mass. It is a lovely area and the highlights were a female Anna’s Hummingbird feeding her two chicks and several Rufous Hummingbirds posing for teeny, tiny little periods on branches.

From there we continued a short distance to the El Palmar settlement ponds. They are very close (as a bird flies) to the capilla but had far more birds. The highlight for many were the views of the Common Yellowthroat with its bright yellow body and black face mask. It is a little skulker that is more often heard than seen so spotting it is always a treat. We also had numerous White-crowned Sparrows, and Yellow-rumped and Orange-crowned Warblers.

I spotted my Bird of the Week, the Semipalmated Plover, near the mouth of Estero Soldado this past week. This small shorebird winters in San Carlos. In the US and most of Canada, it can only be seen during migration as it makes its way to the arctic tundra where it breeds. Plovers are my favorite shorebirds. While they are similar to sandpipers, they are rounder in appearance and have shorter, thicker bills. Most plovers have a “necklace” or band around the neck, unlike sandpipers. Their roundness and large eyes give them that “oh, isn’t it adorable” quality that I can’t resist.

Plovers are visual foragers unlike sandpipers and other long-billed shorebirds who forage by touch using their longer bills to probe. Their foraging process is called the “run and peck” process. They will stand in one spot (not more than a second or two) on the beach and keep an eye out for movement. Once spotted, they then run over and grab the unsuspecting arthropod or marine worm. Because they need room to spot prey, the plovers tend to forage singly while sandpipers can be seen foraging in small to large groupings. Sandpipers go about their business but plovers entertain us.

Plovers will freeze in place as a form of protection using their brown and white plumage to blend perfectly into their surroundings while sandpipers will fly into the air and flee when threatened. The Semipalmated Plover can be differentiated from other Plovers such as the Wilson’s and Snowy by its yellow legs and the yellow on its short and stubby bill. The semipalmated in its name means it is only partially palmated and palmated refers to the webbing between the toes of birds. So our Semipalmated Plovers have webbing between the toes but not completely.

The birding group will meet this coming Thursday, March 27 at 8:00am at the Mariscos Esterito Cafe located at the end of San Carlos Bay near the fish camp and across from the Red Cross station. You do not need to be an experienced birder to join our group. If you do not know anything except that you want to know more, our group will help you learn. If you are an experienced birder and just want to know other birders, then join us and share your knowledge. Please bring your water, sun and insect protection, and a chair. And your binoculars, of course. Outings last until around 11:00am and we go out to breakfast/lunch afterwards. If you have any questions, sightings to share, or comments, please feel free to contact me at maryltannehill@yahoo.com. I wish you Happy Birding wherever you are.
