The Rescate / Yacht Club Fishing Tournament, May 29 – 31

Come fish the magic waters of San Carlos. The 2026 Yacht Club / Rescate Fishing Tournament will take place from May 29 – 31.

It promises to be a fun time, as always, with lots of prizes including new daily angler awards. This is an event where a lone angler could enter and for no more than the entry fee, walk off with several thousand dollars in prize money. There are Daily Angler Awards and both Fun Fish Jackpots and regular Jackpots.

The entry fee is $250 USD per angler, which includes tournament swag and Awards Dinner (there’s no boat fees). The Captain’s Package is $85 USD and includes the Awards Dinner and tournament shirt. Other buy-in jackpots are available. Register here.

Read the rules here. Mexican law requires a valid fishing permit for each angler.

There will be a “No Host” Cocktail Party from 5:00pm to 8:00pm on Friday, May 29 at the San Carlos Yacht Club for Registration and Jackpot Entries. Bring all video cameras that will be used. You are encouraged to bring your Captain and guests to this event. Extra dinner tickets cost $35 USD.

The Awards Dinner will be Sunday, May 31 with doors open at 6:00pm at the San Carlos Yacht Club.

Fishing will take place Saturday and Sunday from 7:00am to 3:00pm

Rescate Marketplace, May 30

Every Saturday, browse the goodies for sale at the Rescate-sponsored Marketplace in the parking lot next to the Thrift Store from 8:00am – noon.

Many vendors will be selling their wares at the Marketplace, including baked goods, fresh fruit and vegetables and handcrafted items.

There will be live music to entertain as you shop.

All vendors are welcome (artisans, cooks, crafters … no tianguis). Vendors should WhatsApp to reserve a space at 622-126-2112 or 505-236-8942.

Marinaterra Dorado Derby: June 12 – 13

The 12th annual Marinaterra Dorado Derby will take place from June 12 – 13.

The registration fee is 4,000 pesos. Proceeds from this tournament will be donated to local charities.

This prestigious sport fishing tournament, known for being one of the largest in the state, brings together anglers to compete for great prizes, including ATVs for the winners.

Participation is on an individual basis and the winner is the participant who presents the heaviest male dorado fish, in accordance with the tournament rules.

Fishing Report

The season is shaping up to be one of the best ever. San Carlos has an excellent report card. Marlin: A, Dorado:A+, sailfish: A++.

The weather has been pretty good. It’s staying a perfect temperature on the water, and I’ve often seen 77.7 for the water temp. Tons of flying fish are in the area and the fish are full of squid. Now we just need tuna.

There are other options too. Yellowtail were caught up the coast. I’ve seen photos of grouper and big cabrilla coming in from afar – Tortuga, San Marcos, Martir, and up the coast. We picked up Sierra, some jacks, and even bonita in the Bay. There are fish around.

The shorelines have been stuffed with bait in areas. I saw massive schools of small snapper. Big snapper, triggers of all sizes, cabrilla, pompano, and many more were seen snorkeling. I swam over a school of large corvina and came back and caught a number. I saw some massive sting rays that I haven’t seen in year.

The blue water and pelagics are just a couple miles out. The action has been hot all over. Hot areas stretched for over ten miles. A 40 pound  wahoo was caught farther out. Some of the marlin are close to 200 pounds, and there are some big sails. A good team could release up to 20 – 30 sails a day. The Dorado are mostly 20 – 30 pound bulls.

We also spotted Fin Whales and some big pods of Bottlenose and Common Dolphin. The sea is alive!

Birding Report

Hola Birding Enthusiasts,

We had 5 for our outing last week and headed to the Marina Seca slough. At least that is what I call the area that carries run off from the Marina Seca settlement ponds to the sea. It is filled with tall reeds and various plants and very attractive to many birds. We saw numerous White Ibis, two rare White-faced Ibis, Black-bellied Whistling Ducks, and, most importantly, two tiny Black-necked Stilt chicks. We had 25 species in total. It was quite warm in the sun and there was no shade so we quit after 1.5 hours and went to the always delicious Las Capitanas Restaurant.

I chose my Bird of the Week: The Tropical Kingbird because it has now arrived in San Carlos for the summer and I always receive a number of inquiries each spring wanting to know who that pretty but noisy yellow bird is. If you haven’t yet seen it, you probably will and you most certainly will hear it.

Most of our birds in the winter are migrants from the north and they return north in the spring. In the summer we have three colorful migrants from the south: The Varied Bunting – purple, red, and blue; the Brown-crested Flycatcher with its bright yellow belly; and, the even brighter yellow Tropical Kingbird.

The Tropical Kingbird is a permanent resident in the coastal regions of most of Mexico, Central America, and vast areas of South America but here it only comes for the summer. In the United States, the species summers just into southernmost Texas and Arizona. It is a flycatcher and, like all flycatchers, perches and then darts out to grab and devour insects. Unlike many birds, they are very habituated (comfortable) in human habitats. You may see it on a utility line, fence post, or exposed tree singing away in its buzzy voice. It likes to be near water and we see it at all the settlement ponds. I took my photo at the Marina Seca slough that runs by the boatyard.

Allaboutbirds.org says the Tropical Kingbird will often build its nest near the nests of Blackbird species (here that means Oriole nests) because Blackbird species nest in colonies which provide additional protection from predators. Orioles will often build their nests near wasp nests to deter predators and they all join together to chase away nest parasites like the Bronzed and Brown-headed Cowbirds (also starting to appear in San Carlos and here for the summer) eager to deposit their eggs in another bird’s nest. Keep your eyes and ears open for this lovely bird.

The birding group will meet this coming Thursday, May 28 at 7:30am at the Mariscos Esterito Cafe located at the end of San Carlos Bay near the fish camp and across from the Red Cross station. 

You do not need to be an experienced birder to join our group. If you do not know anything except that you want to know more, our group will help you learn. If you are an experienced birder and just want to know other birders, then join us and share your knowledge. Please bring your water, sun and insect protection, and a chair. And your binoculars, of course. Diving Report

Although diving occurs year round in San Carlos, it seems that the Memorial Day Weekend kicks off the summer diving season.

Last Friday, divers from El Mar Diving Center San Carlos did 3 dives at Isla San Pedro Nolasco. Dive sites included Cascadita (Little Waterfall), Roca Grande (Big Rock), and El Faro (Lighthouse). They reported visibility of about 50 feet and water temperatures between 76 to 79 F at all three sites.

At this time of the year there are great schools of grunts – Spottail, Greybar, Cortez, and most prolific on this day were Wavyline. Triggerfish of all ages and sizes were also quite abundant. As the water temps are still on the cool side, four types of nudibranchs were seen as well as two Guitarfish. Other sightings were Blue-spotted Jawfish in their nuptial colors trying to attract a female, Spotted shapenose puffers with their white spots on black bodies and bright green eyes, and two Hawksbill sea turtles.

As Spring is happening on land, it also happens underwater. The ever-popular Sargent Majors were busy laying their eggs on the rocks, while the males change to a deep purple color and guard them from a variety of hungry fish trying to steal a snack. Spring dives are also a time to see many juvenile varieties of fish. The Pacific highhat (pictured on left) is a very drab brown fish as an adult found hiding under rocks in dark spaces. But the young are very bright black and yellow, also hiding in dark cracks and crevasses. Chub juveniles (pictured right) can be seen in shallow waters near shore on dives or snorkels. Chubs can quickly change from a silvery color to their camouflage dots. Both of these juveniles are only about 1” to 1 1/2.”

Clean Up San Carlos, May 30

Clean Up San Carlos! is a group of local volunteers who work together to beautify our surroundings.

This Saturday, May 30, the whole community is invited to help. As a lot of our amazing volunteers leave San Carlos this time of year, this will be the last official clean up of this season.

Volunteering is easy! Just meet a the designated spot and we give you bags, gloves and trash grabbers. It usually takes about an hour but you can come for any amount of time. It’s a great way to start the weekend!

We will meet at 8:00am in the vicinity of the entrance to the Tetakawi Trail. It might be a bit closer to the OXXO — just look for the orange cones and the supply truck (see Red Pin on map). 

Join us, outside, and help keep San Carlos beautiful! Everybody is welcome.

** Bags and gloves and safety vests will be provided. Don’t forget to bring your drinking water.
** We have a few Grabbers on hand, but please bring your own if you have one.

The boat No Le Hace is a comfortable, 53 foot yacht is air-conditioned and has a restroom. It leaves from the Iguana Dock (right in front of Marvida Taproom & Kitchen) at Marina San Carlos.

Kite Club

Live the adventure at the Kite Club, where you will find water activities for the whole family. What a great way for you to connect with the Sea of Cortez, considered the world’s aquarium.

Located on the beautiful soft sands of the popular Algodones beach, Kite Club’s activity center has something for everyone!

We can teach you how to Flyboard, Kitesurf, or Wakeboard, or just rent out equipment to you. At Kite Club we also rent out Jet Skis, single and double kayaks, and paddleboards. And we also offer boat rides. So now is THE time to get in and on the water! And while you are here, enjoy some delicious food and drinks from our Snack Bar. We are waiting to serve you today! Or just come and check out the kiteboarding show while sipping on a refreshing cocktail and enjoying our music at the beach.

Specials: With a minimum consumption of 650 pesos, your 100 pesos entrance fee will be reimbursed by the restaurant.
