Fishing & Birding Report
Fishing Report
A handful of 20 – 30 pound Dorado were landed in the last week. We picked up one seven miles out, where two were found the day before. I can’t recall ever catching Dorado in April. Many marlin were seen throughout the week, and we released one off a lure on Tuesday. I saw a few whales and Thresher Sharks. Summer life is moving in. I didn’t hear a lot of reports, but some good fish were caught. A nice White Seabass was landed, along with a number of yellowtail and one big grouper at Isla Martir. The pangas were out there hunting for red snapper. The bait along the shoreline is bigger, and I saw more triggerfish, cabrilla, and yellow snapper while snorkeling. I think this latest push may deposit more tropical fish into the area. We should be able to put those wetsuits away and maybe feel a touch of warmth this week by Bryan Replogle, Team Margarita Sportfishing, repsilon@aol.com |
Birding Report
We had 6 for our last outing. We chose the settlement ponds at the Rincón del Ensueño development across from the old Paradiso Hotel. We picked that spot because the Sunday before I had spotted 3 brand new Least Grebe chicks riding on their parent’s back. The chicks will ride on the back of a parent for only about a week even though they are able to swim within 24 hours of birth. To our surprise, we had not only one group of new chicks but three. One is slightly older and swimming independently although still being fed by the parents. This one had been well hidden and we only just spotted it. The third brood was only a few days old and still being carried by the parents. We had 33 species in all including Great Kiskadees, Western Warbling Vireos, Killdeer, Hooded Orioles and a close-up view of the Ladder-backed Woodpecker. We went to Buena Onda Bakery and Restaurant for a late breakfast. My Bird of the Week is the Warbling Vireo. Its Spanish name is Vireo Gorjeador Occidental. You may never have heard of Vireos. I had not until I started to seriously bird. They are small to medium-sized passerine birds found in the new world and Southeast Asia. Passerines are perching birds which includes about 50% of all species. Within that huge category, Vireos are in the family Vireronidae. They are about the size of warblers but with thicker bills, shorter tails and a rather plain gray / green coloring. But, as you can see from the photo, they are quite subtly quite lovely. Males and females are alike in plumage. Several species of Vireo winter in our area. The Western Warbling Vireo, however, winters to the south of us and migrates through our area in the spring. We are seeing it at all the settlement ponds right now. They spend the summer throughout most of the United States and Western Canada and forage for insects high up in deciduous forest habitat, usually near water. Since our trees are shorter, they are easier to spot here. If you have trees in your yard, I encourage you to look for them while they are still here. The birding group will meet this coming Thursday, April 30 at 7:30am at the Mariscos Esterito Cafe located at the end of San Carlos Bay near the fish camp and across from the Red Cross station. You do not need to be an experienced birder to join our group. If you do not know anything except that you want to know more, our group will help you learn. If you are an experienced birder and just want to know other birders, then join us and share your knowledge. Please bring your water, sun and insect protection, and a chair. And your binoculars, of course. Outings last until around 11:00am and we go out to lunch afterwards. If you have any questions, sightings to share, or comments, please feel free to contact me at maryltannehill@yahoo.com. I wish you Happy Birding wherever you are. by Mary Tannehill |

CRRIFS: Bird Traps at Sea, Part 2
Our latest patient Oscar is a yellow-footed gull, native to our Gulf of California. We were contacted by a family in Miramar. He was seen at their house entangled in a lure. One end was stuck in its beak and the other in its foot. When the CRRIFS rescue team went to attend to him at their house, he was still able to fly. It required some chasing by the team, but they were able to get him safely to CRRIFS. After the disentanglement and treatment of antibiotics and analgesics, he is now resting in one of the cages awaiting to go back home. We hope to release him next week. On another happy note, Mateo, the pelican who was rescued from a sardine waste pond and bathed in Dawn has recovered nicely. After 2 weeks of eating fish and getting the grease out of his system, he was released Saturday morning in front of Delfin Condos and quickly took a high flight back to his home. If you see any birds or animal affected by fishing gear or that need immediate help, please contact us by calling or texting us on WhatsApp at 622-152-9934. And report to Mexican authorities “PROFEPA” at 662-217-5453 any ghost fishing nets / gear. CRRIFS – We are much more than turtles!
