Fishing & Birding Reports

San Carlos Fishing Report

Great weather and the water continues to warm up. The bait is everywhere with birds diving all over. A lot of tiny bait is out there attracting a few whales. The ocean is full of life.

The yellowtail in close are pushing 20 pounds, with some at the Island going even larger.

Surface bites were had at times, with trolling and jigging working.

Yellowtail were caught up and down the coast. A few Sierra were caught, and one marlin was spotted.

The bite should be solid for a couple more weeks.

Birding Report

Hola Birding Enthusiasts,

We had seven for our outing last week and headed to the fishing docks just off the causeway between Guaymas and Empalme. This area can be great if the tides are at the right level – not too high and not too low. Fortunately, for us, the level was almost perfect and the warm sun was offset by a pleasantly cool breeze. It was full of birds, we had 43 species total. A highlight for many was the bright pink Roseate Spoonbills foraging in close proximity. There were also a number of Black-bellied Plovers in various stages of plumage: some beginning to get their summer black bellies, others totally blotchy with old and new plumage, and a few still in their winter plumage white bellies.

There were also Marbled Godwits, a large flock of Western Sandpipers, a few Least Sandpipers, and numerous Willets foraging in the mud. In the shallow waters we had Blue Herons, Great Egrets, a Tri-colored Heron and an all white (juvenile plumage) Little Blue Heron. The Laughing Gulls were there with their heads changing to the summer plumage black and among them were the Hermann’s, Ring-billed, and Yellow-footed Gulls. A couple of the Mangrove Swallows sat for a bit on a wire above us and both the Brown and White Pelicans were easily spotted. We finished the outing with lunch at Cocina de Rita restaurant in San Jose.

My Bird of the Week is the Common Yellowthroat. I call this bird the yellow Lone Ranger because of its black mask and bright yellow body. It is a tiny warbler that, like all warblers, flits from branch to branch foraging for insects. Yellowthroats prefer thick, tangled vegetation just above the water. We most often spot it at settlement ponds, often seeing its bright yellow reflection in the water before catching sight of the actual bird. It can also be found at the estuaries. However, my photo was taken at an area just off the Esterito Road where a few large puddles of water from the summer rains are still around.

Its call reminds me of a wren – very harsh, fast, and loud. Birdsna.org calls it a “chittering” sound. Its Spanish name is Mascarita común. The Common in the Yellowthroat’s name is appropriate for it spends summers in almost every state in the US and throughout Canada and then winters in all of Mexico and Central America. Birdsna.org reports that on breeding grounds up north, Common Yellowthroats are active from sunrise to sunset. However, on wintering grounds (like here), they forage in the late morning and late evening. They act like they are on vacation. Good for them!

The birding group will meet this coming Thursday, March 19 at 8:00am at the Mariscos Esterito Cafe located at the end of San Carlos Bay near the fish camp and across from the Red Cross station.

You do not need to be an experienced birder to join our group. If you do not know anything except that you want to know more, our group will help you learn. If you are an experienced birder and just want to know other birders, then join us and share your knowledge. Please bring your water, sun and insect protection, and a chair. And your binoculars, of course. Outings last until around 11:00am and we go out to lunch afterwards. If you have any questions, sightings to share, or comments, please feel free to contact me at maryltannehill@yahoo.com. I wish you Happy Birding wherever you are.

CRRIFS: Ghost Nets Take More Sea Turtle Lives

At CRRIFS, we have a number of different programs for the conservation of our beautiful wildlife. Our least favorite is to attend animal strandings on our beaches and in the ocean. Thank you to the beach goers on San Francisco beach for reporting to us a deceased sea turtle and sea lion in the waters. Since the turtle was entangled in a ghost net (a piece of gillnet), it could not wash ashore.

On Friday evening CRRIFS, along with PROFEPA and SEMAR (the navy), went by panga to release it. It takes time for CRRIFS to coordinate these recoveries. Many thanks to SEMAR for conducting the retrieval.

CRRIFS is part of the Strandings Network program of PROFEPA, the Mexican authority that we make the reports to for any wildlife in danger or stranding. If the animal on shore is too big for us to dispose, we contact them to take care of it. Remember good fishing practices. In recent weeks, we have found several sea turtles, birds and a dolphin entangled in ghost nets.

Besides strandings, last Thursday CRRIFS staff of veterinarians and biologists took part in an oil spill simulation led by SEMAR which was attended by many state and municipal agencies. As part of this, CRRIFS simulated the rescue and care of affected wildlife, such as birds and sea turtles.

If you see endangered wildlife either deceased or in need of help, please continue to contact CRRIFS by WhatsApp at 622-152-9934 so we can attend to them.

The Fariseos in San Carlos

Easter in Mexico is steeped with tradition. One unique ritual in San Carlos, Mexico is the arrival of the Fariseos (in English, Pharisees), starting on Ash Wednesday. In the Christian religion, the Pharisees were the ones who brought Jesus to the cross to be crucified. The Fariseos we see today are indigenous men who make a sacrifice during Lent by traveling throughout the region for 40 days, in order to ask for forgiveness from God or to receive a favor from Him.

There are two groups of Fariseos: 1) the Yaqui that come from the small towns along the Yaqui River in Sinaloa, and 2) the Mayo that come from the towns along the Mayo River in Sonora. Based on their costumes, the ones in San Carlos pictured are the Mayo Fariseos.

They are dressed in masks made of goatskin. Their shirts are made of carrizo (a type of bamboo reed). Mayo Fariseos are covered with blankets and often in white robes. They have leg bracelets made of dried butterfly cocoons and filled with small stones that make noise while walking and dancing around San Carlos. They wear Huaraches sandals and carry wooden sticks, rattles and drums. Sometimes their hands are painted red to represent the blood of Christ.

So, with this costume, they go from place to place, and city to city, dancing for money in order to buy food for themselves during their 40 day travels, and to use to celebrate Resurrection Sunday in their hometown. On that Sunday, they also burn the mask.

The unique thing about this ritual is that they never speak when they are traveling about. They wear a rosary and place the small wooden cross in their mouths, to remind them of the cultural and religious significance of their journey. So the next time you see the Fariseos coming around, why not give them a donation and wish them well.
