Meet Celia, the juvenile sea lion who arrived alone at San Francisco beach in need of rest. She interacted with beachgoers along the shore until discovering a floating pad, which became her sanctuary. For a couple of weeks, Celia has been resting on the pad, having figured out how to forage for fish in her surroundings. As she swims and rests, Celia appears to be healing and regaining her health. Story by Melanie Lessard Ryan, photo by Christa Thomas

VW Fest 2026 in Guaymas, by Estaban Ibarra Ramirez

In a historic milestone for biodiversity, the first American bison calf was born in the state of Sonora in April 2026, marking the species’ return to the region after roughly 200 years. The calf, born in the Cuenca Los Ojos reserve in Agua Prieta, is part of a newly reintroduced herd of 29 bison. The American bison is a key “ecosystem engineer” that helps restore native grasslands, improve soil health, and enhance water infiltration. The return is viewed as a restoration of both ecological balance and cultural heritage for the region.

Fishing & Birding Report

Fishing Report

Afternoon and morning winds have been fairly prevalent, but some summer fish are hanging in there. I am not sure what bait they are finding, which is probably why the numbers are low. Still, it only takes one good one to make the day!

The winter fish seem to be absent, so many boats have been trolling for pelagics. We tangled with one small Mako last week. We tried briefly for bonita and did see birds and the sardine boats working hard just up the coast. I didn’t hear of any Island catches, but I’m not counting out the yellowtail reappearing.

While I never saw ballyhoo or sardines, I saw two flying fish and some skipjack. The water was speckled with a billion larvae and I’ve seen some bait from shore. We released a double marlin hookup on Saturday, but very few Dorado were caught from a good fleet of boats. There was a decent catch ratio from boats the other days, but usually just one. The sizes of Dorado were 15 – 30 pounds though!

The bottomfishing seemed to be nothing to write home about. I caught some good numbers of smaller fish jigging off the kayak. I picked up a couple decent corvina casting from shore. A few pods of dolphin graced the area, and two juvenile Humpbacks put on an exhausting and extensive display for us. We witnessed multiple breaches and easily a hundred tail slaps and waves. If you can’t find appreciation with our Sea, then maybe you should just stay home.

Birding Report

Hola Birding Enthusiasts,

We had 6 for our last outing and headed back to one of our favorite birding spots: Ojo de Agua. This little oasis just off the road to the Rancho Ojo de Agua is a series of natural seeps. The ranch has built a concrete, partially submerged, tank for the livestock that wander through the area. The water from these natural springs has allowed for a number of trees to grow providing protection for birds along with fresh drinking water. It is our birdiest location right now and I practically live out there taking photos and making e-bird lists of the many different species that can be spotted.

We saw male and female Western Tanagers, a Varied Bunting, a newly arrived Brown-crested Flycatcher who will summer here as well as its almost identical cousin, the Ash-throated. There were numerous and varied doves, Gambel’s Quail, Northern Cardinals, Pyrrhuloxia, a few sparrows (most have migrated north), and a Warbling Vireo. In all, we saw 32 species. Afterwards we, of course, headed to Doña Rosita’s in La Manga for lunch.

I saw my Bird of the Week, the Northern Parula, also at Ojo de Agua but not until this past Monday. This is a rare bird for this location and the first sighting of a male in breeding plumage.

The Northern Parula is a small, migratory warbler that was initially thought to be in the Titmouse family (Genus Parus). The name, Parula, meant little Titmouse. Many, many years ago, it was called the Blue Yellow-backed Warbler which actually describes it perfectly but the naming authorities were trying to give birds names close to their scientific identity and it was changed. Ironically, current naming authorities are in the process of renaming birds to match their appearance so perhaps it will be renamed again.

It gleans for insects and spiders mostly in the upper canopy of tall trees. Fortunately for me, the trees are shorter here and even more fortunately, it came down to one of the seeps for a drink of water providing an excellent view and photo opportunity. They prefer to breed in forests draped with long, wispy plants such as Spanish Moss. It can be found breeding mostly in the eastern US and Canada. It winters in eastern Mexico and on islands of the West Indies. I have no idea how it ended up here but feel very fortunate to have been able to see it.

The birding group will meet this coming Thursday, May 7 at 7:30am at the Mariscos Esterito Cafe located at the end of San Carlos Bay near the fish camp and across from the Red Cross station.

You do not need to be an experienced birder to join our group. If you do not know anything except that you want to know more, our group will help you learn. If you are an experienced birder and just want to know other birders, then join us and share your knowledge. Please bring your water, sun and insect protection, and a chair. And your binoculars, of course. Outings last until around 11:00am and we go out to lunch afterwards. If you have any questions, sightings to share, or comments, please feel free to contact me at maryltannehill@yahoo.com. I wish you Happy Birding wherever you are

CRRIFS: Getting Ready for Turtles

As part of our ongoing efforts to protect and maintain sea turtle nesting beaches, CRRIFS staff and volunteers recently put up seven new signs on San Francisco beach to alert beach goers of the nesting area. Although we have a bit of time before the first mamma turtle comes ashore to lay her eggs, we made it a World Earth Day project. We are expecting a busy season. It usually starts in June, but we do have an occasional early nest in May that may or may not be viable.

With 60% of the nests in San Carlos laid on this beach, it is important to educate the public. We separated into three groups to get the job done. We will be putting up a few more signs, as others have asked about them for their piece of paradise on San Carlos beaches.

CRRIFS volunteers have many jobs. We put up signs and clean the beach before nesting season. We walk the beaches each morning at sunrise looking for tracks from June – November. We monitor the nests in our incubation center and when ready, help the babies reach the sea. Besides this, we have a Wildlife Rescue Center where volunteers help feed and care for the patients twice a day. Plus, another group volunteers at the Gift Shop at the marina.

If you are here this summer and want to join our fun group of volunteers, our yearly training class starts with an informational meeting on Thursday, May 21, in person or by zoom. Please contact us by phone or text on WhatsApp at 622-152-9934 or our turtle hotline at 622-172-9176 to get more information, and to save your spot.

Savor the tastes of Italy at San Carlos’ premier Italian restaurant, Piccolo.

We are one of the first restaurants established in town celebrating almost 30 years in business! Under new ownership, we have added some delicious new menu items, while preserving those dishes that have been the favorites of our clients for the past three decades. On Sundays from 7am – 1pm, we are now serving a Breakfast Buffet!

Our popular appetizers are breaded fried zucchini and the garlic mushrooms. Then feast on our many tender chicken or beef options, cooked to perfection and served with pasta and a house salad. Or try the lasagna or Italian-flavored pasta dishes — the Pasta Combination platter gives you a variety of three types. In the mood for fish? Check out our Weekly Specials for delectable meals that include fish or shrimp. We also have a fully stocked bar and serve the best margaritas in town.

Piccolo Restaurant is located along the main street in San Carlos, across from Santa Rosa’s grocery store. We have plenty of parking next to the restaurant. With both indoor and outdoor seating for over 60 people, we can accommodate your group, large or small.

Two of our most popular meals that you have to try are the Baked Pork Chamorra accompanied with Spaghetti aglio e olio and sun-dried tomatoes or for the really hungry meat lovers, a 400 gr Rib Eye Lasagna!

Hours: Open Monday, and Wednesday to Saturday: 2pm – 10pm. Sunday Buffet from 7am – 1pm; Sunday regular menu from 2pm – 9pm. Closed on Tuesday. Follow us on Facebook.
