Cinemex, the movie theater in Guaymas, shows movies in Spanish and oftentimes in English.

This week, How To Train Your Dragon, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, and Ballerina are playing in English.

Pride Yacht Parade and Drag Race, June 21

On Saturday, June 21, celebrate Pride in San Carlos with two special events:

1. Yacht Parade in San Carlos. The Don Arturo Yacht will be hosting several Drag Queens who will be celebrating with you during the boat cruise. The cost to participate is 550 pesos or $30 USD and includes 1 Free beer and complimentary access to Colibrí’s Drag Show afterwards. Drinks will be available for sale on the boat. The parade is from 5:00pm to 8:00pm. Meet at Dock L at Marina San Carlos at 4:30pm.

2. Pride Party at Colibrí’s, including a Pride Weekend Drag Show, hosted by Melania Blonde. The cover is 150 pesos (this cover fee is waived if you took part on a boat in the afternoon parade). Cruce de Bahia Algodones, June 22

On Sunday, June 22, swim 5k, 2k or 1k in beautiful Bahia Algodones in the Cruce de Bahia Algodones Swim Competition. Beginners and kids can swim 300 meters.

With calm waters and unparalleled scenery, this crossing tests your endurance in the heart of the Sea of ​​Cortez.

The cost is 650 pesos until June 15, then 700 pesos from June 16 – 21. Register here.

Pick up your race kit on Saturday, June 21 between 3:00pm and 7:00pm at the San Carlos Plaza Hotel.

The Cruce de Bahia Algodones is the first event in the open water swim series. The Mi Amigo Fit Open Water Swim Series is a competition that brings together three of San Carlos’ bay crossings: Algodones, Miramar, and San Carlos. You can compete is 1 or 2 races or try to win the series by competing in all 3.

Even if you are not participating, come out and enjoy the morning races. The race starts at 6:30am at Hotel San Carlos Plaza and ends at the Kite Club.

Tequila Mixed Drink Tasting, June 24

Come join your friends at the San Carlos Yacht Club on Tuesday, June 24 for another tasting event. This time we are sampling 7 of the most popular mixed drinks made with Tequila. Think Paloma, Margarita, Bandito etc. You’ll get a shot glass of each drink & a 3 taco plate dinner with rice and beans! Special pricing on full-sized versions of the Lucky 7 drinks.

San Carlos Beerfest, July 5

Tickets are now on sale for the 4th Annual San Carlos Beerfest.

On Saturday, July 5, dozens of craft beers will be available to sample from 4:00pm to 1:00am at Marinaterra’s Club Duo.

There will be live music and food for sale and Bacanora tasting stands.

Tickets cost 400 pesos in advance and can be purchased at Hotel Marinaterra or online at marinaterra.com/tienda. The price at the door will be 450 pesos.

CRRIFS: Turtle Signs

Last week 15 CRRIFS volunteers and staff put up signs along San Francisco beach to remind locals and visitors alike that our beaches are prime areas for the Olive Ridley turtle nesting. The turtle season starts mid-June with the mamma turtles laying their eggs on our beaches until mid-November. The babies hatch 6-8 weeks later.  With all the dangers on the beaches, we usually remove the nests and take them to our incubation center where they are checked many times a day.
We would love to leave the nest intact on the beach but with the ATV’s driving over them or their nearby vibrations, the chances of survival are diminished. Racoons, along with other predators can rip the eggs apart. Dogs can dig them up, and building a fire on top of an unidentified nest can kill the chances of the eggs hatching.

Please do not drive ATVs on the beach, make fires, or let your dogs run wild and dig up a nest. Help us increase the survival of the endangered Olive Ridley turtles.  We are so fortunate to have them laying their eggs in San Carlos.

Soon we will have information available on how you can adopt a nest release. If you see turtles laying eggs in the early morning or see tracks, please call or text CRRIFS at 622-152-9934.

Fishing Report

Well, just like that, the tuna are gone. There were not many boats out at all early this week, and maybe they aren’t missing much. There are still a lot of sails and marlin around. The Dorado are thin, but maybe everything is full. We filled some bags with Sierra though.

The Dorado Derby had a good turnout with a winner of about 37 pounds. A few better fish were lost and caught earlier in the week. Some decent numbers of Dorado were found farther out. It seems like a few are all around. We found our only Dorado on Tuesday at the Seamounts. We even saw a sail there. The fish are scattered.

Some big marlin are around. Friends landed a Black about 250 pounds. One 400 pound Blue was caught, and a similar one lost. Some smaller Blues were caught. A friend was bitten off and lost a second Wahoo. Unfortunately, no tuna were reported this last week. They are out there though and the season is still in progression.

Diving Report

Every trip to San Pedro Nolasco is different. Sometimes on the way to the island you might see a pod of dolphins, flying mobulas, or jumping sailfish. My last trip, a passing whale was seen. Once at the island, the boat Capitan checks conditions and sees which site might be best for diving. The west side of the island is not always available due to wind and surge, but there are many favorite spots on the east side.

Roca Grande was our first stop recently, and as sometimes happens around the island there was a weak current. A decision was made to dive it as a drift dive, going with the current and being picked up by the boat at the end of the dive, rather than swimming against the current to return. With some maneuvering, it was possible to take photos, even hovering for awhile to catch the nuptial Blue-spotted jawfish (pictured left) advertising for a lady! We also saw a large group of Rainbow wrasses come together, racing up in the water column to spawn.

Our next dive site was Lighthouse. There are always interesting things to find in the sand that starts at about 50 feet. Divers have to move slowly and look for movement. We found another nuptial male out advertising…it was an Orange-throated pikeblenny (pictured right). Beautiful, red Cushion stars were sprinkled along the bottom. Many schools of fish were taking advantage of a few leftover strands of sargassum for hiding and eating.

Both dive sites had very good visibility at 30 – 40 feet with 80 – 82 degree temperatures. It is only going to get better out there…book a trip and enjoy!

At La Zurda, you will find a dozen or more craft beers — you must try our own Rooster Crow and Ezequiel. Oasis has a Breakfast with Cruise on Sundays at 9:30am. This 2-hour cruise includes a selection of your favorites — hot cakes, omelets, chilaquiles, sweet rolls and fruit, with coffee, milk, orange juice, and mimosas. The cost is 650 pesos per person.

Live the adventure at the Kite Club, where you will find water activities for the whole family. What a great way for you to connect with the Sea of Cortez, considered the world’s aquarium.

Located on the beautiful soft sands of the popular Algodones beach, Kite Club’s activity center has something for everyone!

We can teach you how to Flyboard, Kitesurf, or Wakeboard, or just rent out equipment to you. At Kite Club we also rent out Jet Skis, single and double kayaks, and paddleboards. And we also offer boat rides. So now is THE time to get in and on the water! And while you are here, enjoy some delicious food and drinks from our Snack Bar. We are waiting to serve you today! Or just come and check out the kiteboarding show while sipping on a refreshing cocktail and enjoying our music at the beach.
