Southern Mexico is a world away from San Carlos. This tour has become one of our favorites and will become one of yours too. We visit one of southernmost states in Mexico, exploring major archaeological sites as well as the history, culture, cooking, and the people of this region.

The archaeological sites of Monte Alban and Mitla will be featured. We fly to the city of Oaxaca, named for several years as one of the 15 Top Cities in the World, and spend seven days exploring not only Monte Alban, but the local arts and crafts famous in this area: alebrijes, the colorful wooden animal figurines; the black pottery of Coyotepec, unique to this town; Teotitlán and its weaving; walking tours of Oaxaca City and a cooking experience of regional foods you will never forget.

And although this trip is not about shopping, you will have a hard time passing up incredible values on fabrics, clothing, leather goods, pottery, and carved figures. All the while, we will be sampling the local flavors of food and beverages in a very different culture.

This tour is 7 days long, fully escorted by a bilingual host, assisted by knowledgeable locals. Included is private transportation San Carlos/Airport/San Carlos, round trip air, airport transfers, six nights lodging (double occupancy), day tours, private coaches, a welcoming dinner and breakfasts every day. CRRIFS – We Have Pelicans in Need of Cages

CRRIFS has been very busy attending to the injured wildlife found on our beaches and lands. We have been rescuing a large number of pelicans, as it is their breeding season. We are in need of extra-large dog kennels in which to house them as they heal from their injuries.

Our Wildlife Rescue Center is currently at maximum capacity treating 2 pelicans, a Peregrine Falcon, 2 Red Tail Hawks, a Bobcat and a Horned Owl all in large cages, plus a plethora of desert tortoises.

If you have an extra-large dog crate you are willing to donate or let us borrow, the pelicans would love to use it while recuperating. We are happy to show you around our Wildlife Rescue Center. Call or text us at 622-152-9934.

Thank you to Randy and Barbara who donated a large terrarium they no longer needed. It is now home to 10 baby tortoises who were rescued a few months ago.

Fishing & Birding Reports

Fishing Report

The winds are up, but you don’t need to go far. We started to hit them at the Seamounts all within a mile of the harbor. Some fish are pushing 20 pounds too. There was a bit of seaweed at times, but trolling on all sizes worked. It’s nice to be able to do well on four hour trips.

The bottomfishing has seemed to have been slow, so putting on some real meat was appreciated.

There have been very few boats fishing in close, but a few more ventured out to the Island. The fishing was fair to good there at times for both sides of the Island both trolling and jigging. I saw a few ballyhoo and a big Hammerhead, but the winds and tides have held off the warmer water.

Shorelines have been stirred up and I haven’t caught a corvina yet. There’s lots of bait around and the yellowtail bite should hold through the full moon.

Birding Report

Hola Birding Enthusiasts,

We had 11 for our Thursday outing including my precious 13 year old granddaughter. I have not turned her into a birder yet but she was a good sport about coming and a great spotter with those young eyes. We went out to the Ojo de Agua watering hole which has been consistently birdy all season. We had three species of warblers: Black-throated Gray, Orange-crowned, and Nashville. There were lots of Black Vultures, Ash-throated Flycatchers and one Western Flycatcher. There seem to be six Northern Cardinals living out there and we saw all of them. In all we had 24 species. I left early as my granddaughter had reached her limit and needed to be fed. Nancy Norton took over and the group later went for lunch at Las Capitanas Cocina Económica.

The Bird of the Week is the Rufous-backed Robin which a couple of us spotted at the Country Club pond for only the second time this season.

The Rufous-backed is endemic to Mexico. This means found only in Mexico, and only in the western and central areas of the country. There are rare sightings in Arizona but not enough for Allaboutbirds.org to add it to their website. This is a bird that range maps say is not found in our area. However, we know from past sightings in various years that it is, indeed, here although not seen often. Whether it lives here and is a skulker or only visits on occasion, we do not know. I suspect that some birds visit us from the mountains to the east where they can be found year round. Its Spanish name in Mexico is the Mirlo Dorso Canela.

It is more secretive than its relative, the American Robin, and tends to stay hidden in brush. Our Rufous-backed Robin appeared from the brush and came down to the edge of the pond for a drink.

It is pretty easy to identify as it is American Robin size and the rusty colored back stands out as does the white throat with black streaks. The bill is bright yellow.

The birding group will meet this coming Thursday, April 18 at 8:00am at the Mariscos Esterito Cafe located at the end of San Carlos Bay near the fish camp and across from the Red Cross station.

You do not need to be an experienced birder to join our group. If you do not know anything except that you want to know more, our group will help you learn. If you are an experienced birder and just want to know other birders, then join us and share your knowledge. Please bring your water, sun and insect protection, and a chair. And your binoculars, of course. The outing will last until about 11:00am and we go out to lunch afterwards. If you have any questions, sightings to share, or comments, please feel free to contact me at maryltannehill@yahoo.com. I wish you happy birding wherever you are.

Come in and try one of our delicious and affordable breakfasts including scrambled and fried eggs, pitas and bagels, bacon, ham and sausage, hash browns and your favorite Chilaquiles salad.

Ready for lunch or dinner? Embrace the tastes and flavors of traditional Mexican cuisine by choosing a torta — a Mexican sandwich filled with a plethora of different ingredients and toppings. Each ingredient adds a particular flavor to the torta, leading to our distinct Oréganoo’s taste. For example, La Sonora torta is filled with Rib eye steak, Ures cheese, panela cheese, beans, guacamole, cabbage, tomatoes and mayonnaise. La Cubana is filled with breaded beef steak, pork, Argentinian sausage, ham, Monterrey cheese, pickles, lettuce, tomatoes and mayo.

We also serve traditional sandwiches — the Chicken Ranch being one of our most popular. We’ve also got Roast Beef, Italian and Philly sandwiches, as well as Pulled Pork. All our tortas and sandwiches are accompanied by French fries. For a lighter fare, try our Greek or Florida salads.

Oreganoo’s is located along the main street in San Carlos, in the Seascape Plaza (heading out of town, just past the new condo tower being built along the beach). There is plenty of free parking in the plaza.

Tuesday Special: Buy one Chicken Ranch Sandwich and get the 2nd one for half price!

Hours: Open daily from 8:30am – 6:00pm — closed on Wednesdays. Follow us on Facebook and Instagram. We have FREE WIFI and we do “Take-out”. For reservations or your take-out order, call 622-113-3721. Click here for the menu, more information, and a map.

Club Londres Restaurants

Club Londres Restaurants is the latest food-offering concept in San Carlos where multiple restaurants share a common space. The location is the former Captains Club restaurant, just up the street from Marina San Carlos. The two new restaurants, Barba Roja and Pasillo Londres, share this space.

Originally the first food truck in Hermosillo, Barba Roja has expanded its business to include 2 restaurants in the capital city, and is NOW OPEN in San Carlos. While popular for their Tostadas – they are especially famous for the special homemade sauces that you must try on your meals. The name-sake dish, Barba Roja, combines Shrimp ceviche, marinated fresh tuna, octopus in black sauces, mango, and avocado with a touch of chipotle aioli. The Bucanera and Tostitos Juan Pedro are also must. They use the freshest seafood in town! Several Aguachiles and Cocteles dishes are available, as well as delicious flavored ice cream. They’re also offering wood-fired Pizzas — using the same recipe from Mike of the former Captains Club. All your old favorites are back!

Pasillo Londres also started in Hermosillo and has expanded with a second restaurant in San Carlos. Here you will find the best breakfasts in town with dozens of options to start the day off right. From classic favorites like the Lupita Omelet or the Nayeli Eggs Benedict, to the delectable Red Velvet Waffles with Oreo cookies, pecans and hazelnut butter, their innovative dishes will surprise and delight every palate. The fluffy, melt-in-your-mouth pancakes come in a variety of flavors such as chocolate, mixed berry, corn pancakes with chile verde sauce, or lemon pancakes. To drink, enjoy a velvety cappuccino, a smooth latte, chai or just a regular coffee — all are sure to please.

For breakfast or later in the day, indulge in our new Fish & Chips dish, or one of 7 types of Chilaquiles, bagels, sourdough bread sandwiches, croissants, and healthy yogurt bowls. There are also several smoothies and juices available. Ask about the Secret Menu for more specials!

Specials: Saturday: Enjoy 2 x 1 mimosas from 9am – 1pm.

Hours: Pasillo Londres: Open Monday to Friday from 8am – 3pm; Saturday & Sunday from 8:30am – 4pm. Follow us on Facebook and Instagram. Call: 662-256-9643.
Barba Roja: Open every day from 9:00am – 6:00pm. Follow us on Facebook and Instagram. Call: 622-226-0932.
