All levels of government are working together to ensure that Semana Santa 2024 is safe and fun for all residents and tourists alike. To that end, some roadblocks and barricades have been set up around town. Give yourselves extra time to get anywhere this week. This Week’s Special Events
Semana Santa, March 24 – 31The week leading up to Easter sees an influx of thousands of people into Sonora’s beach-side towns. This is a popular time for family vacations. And what better place to spend it than on a sandy palm-lined beach. Semana Santa, or Holy Week, goes from Palm Sunday (March 24, 2024) to Easter (Sunday, March 31, 2024). It is Mexico’s second most important holiday season, after Christmas. School children have a two week holiday, and many companies close-up shop during that time so that their employees can spend time with their families. For some, it is time to spend in church, but many Mexicans will also take advantage of the holiday to go on vacation. And, for their vacation, half of Mexico flocks to the beaches looking to play in the surf, camp on the beach, spend time with family and friends and to dance, drink and have a fiesta. Semana Santa San Carlos: By day the beaches are overflowing with tourists and locals alike, flying kites, swimming and soaking up the beautiful weather — while enjoying fun in the sun and a couple of cervezas. If you need to drive anywhere, this is the time to do it, because by late afternoon, the roads are bumper to bumper with trucks, cars, ATVs and motor bikes cruising up and down the strip. The vehicles are overflowing with people. Whole families ride on ATVs. And, speakers and plastic Tecate chairs in the back of pick-up trucks convert them into parties on wheels. From one end of the town to the other, celebrants, young and old, families and friends fill the streets. Thirsty revelers guzzle Pacifico and Tecate. The already raucous atmosphere is pumped up even higher with roving musicians who add to the cacophony coming from hundreds of vehicles’ sound systems turned up to the max. People dance in large groups anywhere and everywhere that the feeling moves them. Vendors line the street selling everything from souvenirs and sunglasses to local crafts. The mouth-watering smell of BBQ wafts through the air. All the local food specialties are available, from ceviche to carne asada. Yes, Semana Santa is noisy and crowded and the traffic can be horrible, but it’s a fantastic Mexican celebration that should be experienced at least once. You |

Birding Report
Hola Birding Enthusiasts, We had 14 for our outing last week. We went west and north to the Ojo de Agua watering hole. The natural springs here attract birds as well as cows, horses and an iguana that we have seen here for several years. It is not a place with a huge number of different species but it does provide close views of the birds we spot and an opportunity to observe their behavior. We had at least 6 Northern Cardinals flying in and out the whole time we were there as well as their close relative, the Pyrrhuloxia. The differences between the two are subtle so the group had a good chance to practice identification. We also had two of our desert sparrows: the Black-throated and the harder to identify Rufous-winged Sparrow. We worked on identification of the Ash-throated Flycatcher since its close cousin, the Brown-crested, will be arriving soon to spend the summer here. For some of our group, it was the first time seeing the Black Vulture and we had good opportunities to view it on the ground and flying in the air with the Turkey Vultures. In all we had 21 species and 9 of us went to lunch at Doña Rositas in La Manga. My Bird of the Week is the Hooded Oriole. The Spanish name in Mexico is Calandria Dorso Negro Menor. This is the most commonly seen Oriole in San Carlos and they have just started to arrive from their winter residences. They winter to the south of us and breed here during the summer. It is not unknown to have small resident populations that have become habituated (used to humans being around) stay in an area year round. This used to be the situation here in San Carlos but in recent years the winter resident population has disappeared. Hooded Orioles begin their northern migration in mid-March and we are now spotting males in various locations around San Carlos. The lovely bird in the photo taken by Ross Bloom is atop an Aloe Vera plant in Estero Soldado. The females should begin to arrive this coming week. They will then build their nests and hang them from the undersides of palm fronds. Orioles are members of the blackbird family (Icteridae), along with meadowlarks and cowbirds. Birds in this family all have super strong, long, and pointed bills. They use these bills to get at food other birds can’t reach, such as prying apart thick patches of grass, opening up flowers, enlarging holes in tree bark, and digging into ripe fruits for their juice. Or partaking at your hummingbird feeders. Hooded Orioles love to drink nectar from hummingbird feeders and it is amusing to watch them try and drink while precariously hanging onto a feeder designed for tiny hummingbirds. Amusing that is until their heavy bodies cause the feeder to swing and the sticky liquid goes all over your patio (speaking from experience here.) You can also attract them to your yard by attaching a halved orange to a post or platform. You can identify the males by their brilliant yellow plumage and black face and throat. Females are a drabber yellow with a grayish back. The birding group will not be deterred by Semana Santa festivities and will meet this coming Thursday, March 28 at 8:00am at the Mariscos Esterito Cafe located at the end of San Carlos Bay near the fish camp and across from the Red Cross station. We will, however, skip lunch so people can avoid crowds in getting home. You do not need to be an experienced birder to join our group. If you do not know anything except that you want to know more, our group will help you learn. If you are an experienced birder and just want to know other birders, then join us and share your knowledge. Please bring your water, sun and insect protection, and a chair. And your binoculars, of course. The outing will last until about 11:00am. If you have any questions, sightings to share, or comments, please feel free to contact me at maryltannehill@yahoo.com. I wish you happy birding wherever you are. by Mary Tannehill; photo by Ross Bloom |
