Saturday Market, April 13

The Saturday Market begins April 6 from 8:00am until noon in the Church Square, between Bonifacio’s and Tortuga’s.

Every Saturday, you can shop for fresh produce, homemade goodies and crafts, like tamales, chili rellenos, key lime pie, cinnamon rolls, cookies, bread, jewelry, dog treats, sea glass jewelry, and more.

Live Entertainment with Kevin Terry, April 16

Come join your friends at the San Carlos Yacht Club on Tuesday, April 16 to enjoy local musician, Kevin Terry. Kevin plays popular music that he magically puts together by layering instruments while you watch.

The music starts around 5:30pm, but come early to meet friends, enjoy drinks & the meatloaf dinner. This event is Open to the Public and is a great opportunity to check out the club and meet members.

The Club & Bar open at 3:30pm, and the kitchen begins serving around 5:00pm. The music starts around 5:30pm.

The cost for the meatloaf, mashed potatoes & gravy is 250 pesos for members and 300 pesos for non-members

World Art Day at Colibrí’s, April 16

In celebration of World Art Day, Colibrí restaurant is showcasing art made by the students of Guaymas’ Casa de La Cultura for the whole week, starting on Tuesday, April 16.

Come in and see the talented and creative works of local artists. The theme is “animals”. Colibrí will have a special Happy Hour all day on Tuesday to support the event.

The work will be on display each day, from Tuesday through to Sunday (for the monthly community Art Walk). Some of the art will also be available for purchase.

Mosaics Class, April 17

Club Deportivo will be hosting a Mosaics Class on Wednesday, April 17 from 9:30am to 1:00pm.

Gather your favorite shells to use in decorating beautiful mosaic plaques.

International Art Day, April 20

On Saturday, April 20, there will be a special show featuring all genres of “art” on the patio at Colibri restaurant.

To promote International Art Day, local artists, dancers, and musicians will be on hand and performing their craft during the day.

Mark Mulligan at Cochorit Beach, April 23

Mark Mulligan will be performing at Cochorit Beach on Tuesday, April 23.

Tickets are on sale at Seaside Realty, where just 500 pesos gets you a round-trip bus from San Carlos, Mark’s show, all the beer you’d like, and seating under a shaded beach palapa!

There’s room for only 38 people to join Mark on this fun annual Cochorit Beach event, so get your tickets now.

The bus departs San Carlos at 10:45am, and gets back by 3:15pm.

Pickleball Tournament, April 26 – 28

Don’t miss out on the last Grandes Ligas de Pickleball Weekend Tournament of the winter season!

It will be held from Friday, April 26 – Sunday, April 28.

This is a team-based event — no need to select a partner. It’s for all ages and all skill sets. The teams will be divided evenly (2 men, 2 women — where possible) and you will play against other teams at your level. Your captain will help with logistics. We play rally scoring. It’s a super fun experience.

Registration ends on Thursday, April 25.

Clean up San Carlos, April 13

Clean Up San Carlos! is a group of local volunteers who work together to beautify our surroundings.

This Saturday, April 13, the whole community is invited to help.

At 8:00am, we will meet at the parking lot of San Francisco beach, nearest to the road (see map).

In partnership with Colibrí restaurant, our goal is to do the main boulevard and the walking path along the street.

** Bags and gloves and safety vests will be provided. Don’t forget to bring your drinking water.
** We have a few Grabbers on hand, but please bring your own if you have one.

SBPA Needs your Help

Hello Snowbirds…Please, before you leave, check your bodegas and storage closets for items you no longer need. We at the SBPA  are preparing for our Annual Tianguis and need your help with donations. We can arrange private pick up of your donations by request.

The SBPA has an extended schedule for donation drop offs for the. Please see the flyer for drop off times for your donations. Here is a map to Club Deportivo.

We are seeking: furniture; jewelry; toiletries; luggage; bedding & towels; sports equipment; art & home decor; small kitchen appliances; and  tools. Sorry but no clothing, please, although shoes are OK. We can also provide the heavy lifting as needed with some notice.

The Tianguis will take place on Saturday, April 20 from 8:00am to 4:00pm.

Thank you for your consideration in supporting the SBPA’s mission to offer free sterilizations to as many cats and dogs as we can.

Fishing Report

There’s lots of fish out there to be caught, although not a lot of boats are fishing. One boat said they easily filled up on Tuesday at the Island. I saw some good schools a mile out, but they were very skittish and didn’t bite. We picked up one good cabrilla on the Seamounts. Some yellowtail schools may be going on the spawn soon, but there should still be good fishing on this waxing moon.

I’ve tried a bit for corvina, but I still don’t think that they have shown up yet. There was tons of bait not too far out, that could move in along the shorelines. There seemed to be plenty of bait for bottomfish, but their bite seemed to be off last week.

Lake Oviachic was productive for one San Carlos team to win the local club tournament with six bass just under a 4 pounds average.

Get out there with the nice weather and find the bite!

Birding Report

Hola Dear Birding Enthusiasts,

We had only four for our outing this past week and headed to the Empalme estuary at the docks. We always have to plan this trip around tides or the birds will be too far away. We were just right for an outgoing tide and had great views of 20 Roseate Spoonbills, Marbled Godwits, Black-necked Stilts, Mangrove Swallows, Western Sandpipers, Black Skimmers, and the Reddist Egret. In all, we had 32 species. We went to San Jose for lunch at the always excellent Cocina de Rita restaurant.

I picked my Bird of the Week: the Nashville Warbler, because we had our first sighting this past week. It is known as the Chipe de Cabesa Gris in Mexico and is easy to identify. It has a gray head, bright yellow throat and breast as well as a thick white eye ring. If you have trees in your yard, you may be able to spot it.

Nashville’s winter in Mexico and then migrate north to summer in the northeastern US and Canada. A lesser contingent summer in areas of northern California, eastern Oregon, Washington and British Columbia.

We see some of our migratory warblers for barely two days and then they are gone; but, in the past, we have seen Nashville’s for a couple of weeks. Migrating warblers are often found in mixed flocks and we have found that to be true here in San Carlos. We often see them mixed in with migrating flocks of sparrows as well. At Ojo de Agua this past week, our Nashville’s were seen with Wilson’s and Black-throated Gray Warblers.

The birding group will meet this coming Thursday, April 11 at 8:00am at the Mariscos Esterito Cafe located at the end of San Carlos Bay near the fish camp and across from the Red Cross station. 

You do not need to be an experienced birder to join our group. If you do not know anything except that you want to know more, our group will help you learn. If you are an experienced birder and just want to know other birders, then join us and share your knowledge. Please bring your water, sun and insect protection, and a chair. And your binoculars, of course. The outing will last until about 11:00am and we go out to lunch afterwards. Oréganoo’s Tortas, Subs & Salads is Now Open in San Carlos!

Oréganoo’s is the newest restaurant in the Seascape Plaza and has you covered for all your favorite homemade sandwiches, subs, salads and desserts. Come in and try one of our delicious and affordable breakfasts including scrambled and fried eggs, pitas and bagels, bacon, ham and sausage, hash browns and your favorite Chilaquiles salad.

Ready for lunch or dinner? Embrace the tastes and flavors of traditional Mexican cuisine by choosing a torta — a Mexican sandwich filled with a plethora of different ingredients and toppings. Each ingredient adds a particular flavor to the torta, leading to our distinct Oréganoo’s taste. For example, La Sonora torta is filled with Rib eye steak, Ures cheese, panela cheese, beans, guacamole, cabbage, tomatoes and mayonnaise. La Cubana is filled with breaded beef steak, pork, Argentinian sausage, ham, Monterrey cheese, pickles, lettuce, tomatoes and mayo.

Club Londres Restaurants

Club Londres Restaurants is the latest food-offering concept in San Carlos where multiple restaurants share a common space. The location is the former Captains Club restaurant, just up the street from Marina San Carlos. The two new restaurants, Barba Roja and Pasillo Londres, share this space.

Originally the first food truck in Hermosillo, Barba Roja has expanded its business to include 2 restaurants in the capital city, and is NOW OPEN in San Carlos. While popular for their Tostadas – they are especially famous for the special homemade sauces that you must try on your meals. The name-sake dish, Barba Roja, combines Shrimp ceviche, marinated fresh tuna, octopus in black sauces, mango, and avocado with a touch of chipotle aioli. The Bucanera and Tostitos Juan Pedro are also must. They use the freshest seafood in town! Several Aguachiles and Cocteles dishes are available, as well as delicious flavored ice cream. They’re also offering wood-fired Pizzas — using the same recipe from Mike of the former Captains Club. All your old favorites are back!

Pasillo Londres also started in Hermosillo and has expanded with a second restaurant in San Carlos. Here you will find the best breakfasts in town with dozens of options to start the day off right. From classic favorites like the Lupita Omelet or the Nayeli Eggs Benedict, to the delectable Red Velvet Waffles with Oreo cookies, pecans and hazelnut butter, their innovative dishes will surprise and delight every palate. The fluffy, melt-in-your-mouth pancakes come in a variety of flavors such as chocolate, mixed berry, corn pancakes with chile verde sauce, or lemon pancakes. What a unique experience. Take a Boat Tour from Marina San Carlos to Guaymas — enjoy a 2-hour scenic cruise and then have a tour of the one-of-a-kind Pearl Farm (Perlas del Mar de Cortez).
