Fishing & Diving Reports
Fishing Report
We found some very nice Sierra this week, but no bonita. I heard of a few caught. The skipjack were biting at times, and there are a million out there. The smaller Dorado are more towards the Reef, and there are some larger ones around. The sailfish were the same, and a few decent numbers were seen. A few marlin are out there, along with some better ones. A big one found us Saturday. I was being asked and explaining how they aren’t that shy of the boat, when my second wave lure got taken for a ride. The fish was screaming line and diving deep. I put some drag on as the marlin came across the spread. It then surfaced and started charging the boat. It made a good run, but was on 100 pound line with a mile of line. The angler quickly tired the fish with the chest and seat harness on my boat and we were able to release our second biggest fish in my lifetime of fishing here, and our biggest Black Marlin. Shorelines were packed with bait and birds. I didn’t snorkel the waters, but I bet that the usual suspects were there. A few corvina were landed. Look for the birds in the middle of town to Charly’s Rock. They all fed well this full moon. by Bryan Replogle, Team Margarita Sportfishing, repsilon@aol.com |
Diving Report
Some of the sites visited for local diving were San Antonio Point, Deer Island, Window Rock, and the Aquarium. Visibility locally was not the best due to all the recent storms…10 – 20 feet. Water temperatures were still in the high 80’s. Isla San Pedro Nolasco was also a destination for all of the groups with sites like South Point reporting excellent visibility, between 60 – 70 feet and water temperatures of 88 degrees. They also dove the Sonoran Artificial Reef System – the wrecks. Most all of the divers enjoyed several Green sea turtle sightings at the various dive sites. Divers also saw a Pacific seahorse, free swimming Green moray eels, and Cortez rainbow wrasse spawning (pictured left) in the water column, along with large schools of Grunts, King angelfish, Yellowtail surgeonfish and so many more. The spawning of many kinds of fish involves males and females coming together in large groups and all at the same time swimming rapidly towards the surface releasing eggs and sperm to mix in the water column. It appears as a puff of smoke, seen in the left photo. A rare sighting this weekend (and a few of the past weekends in September) at one of the wrecks was a Scrawled filefish (pictured right). This fish is more common farther south in the gulf down to Panama. They are a strange shape and a relative of triggerfishes. Filefish have a first dorsal fin that can be raised and lowered like triggerfish. Their colors vary from brown / tan to blue darkening and lightening depending on the background. Stop by El Mar Diving Center in San Carlos to see what trips are coming up in October. There is plenty of great diving and snorkeling yet to be done. And, uncommon species are being seen locally and at the island. Go find something you have never seen before! by Annette Felix and Feliza Rios, El Mar Diving Center; Trip summary information by Leslie Nichols |
Other News Around Town
CRRIFS: Cowbirds Released During the Storm
CRRIFS staff and volunteers took them to Delfín Condos and released them under a hibiscus bush. Unfortunately, it started raining harder than we predicted. The birds were no dummies. They waited out the storm under a patio and then dried themselves off on the stairs. Volunteers watched as they ventured out to the wet grass looking for worms and bugs. The food was great at the Wildlife Rescue Center. It consisted of a combination of dead bugs, fruit and seed. They also received treats of beetle larvae, but they seemed happy to be released and begin their best lives. If you see a distressed bird or wildlife, please call or text us on WhatsApp at 622-152-9934 and CRRIFS can help. |
