3 CRRIFS Patients are Going Home

CRRIFS is excited to be able to release our bobcat, cacomixtle and baby tortoise this week with the help of PROFEPA. Quique, our bobcat, was hit by a car and had a fractured leg. After consulting with Orthopedic Veterinarians, it was decided to wait for it to heal itself with help of medicine, since he also had an open leg wound and bandaging would have been futile. He has healed nicely.

Coco, our one-eyed Cacomixtle, has been at CRRIFS since December 2023. He is doing well, and we believe can survive with one eye, so he will be released at the beginning of this week!

While our baby tortoise has enjoyed his stay, the vegetation has grown enough for him to survive on his own. Returning our patients to their homes is the most rewarding part of our work.

If you see injured or deceased wildlife, please call or text us at 622-152-9934; do not try to touch them. CRRIFS staff are trained to transport injured wildlife. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, training for our beach patrols will be starting mid-May in Zoom and in person.

Fishing & Birding Reports

Fishing Report

We are fully headed into summer this week. Marlin and dorado have been spotted and warm south winds are in the forecast. The bottomfishing and grouper catches are decent. A friend spotted a ‘meter-long’ corvina while snorkeling. We caught our first Sierra and barracuda this week. I saw a flying fish and there are tons of ballyhoo around.

Half day trips were successful for us in close, although we had to weed through a lot of seaweed. We hit the yellowtail good at times on the Seamounts. They were around, but chasing a lot of small bait. Doble produced some 8 – 9 pound yellow snapper for us, and we released one 6 pound cabrilla. Two very large grouper are wearing my Rapalas. The cold water popped up in the mornings, with clear water pushing in later. They had a lot of great topwater action at the Island.

It time to get that summer gear out, as dorado will be within 12 – 15 miles by Wednesday, and they were reporting 50 pound fish off Loretto already.

Birding Report

Hola Dear Birding Enthusiasts,

Note: We will be meeting at 7:30am instead of 8:00am this Thursday.

We had only 8 for our outing last Thursday as our human migrants continue to head north. With favorable tides, we headed to the Empalme estuary. Many shorebirds also migrate north but we still had our full time herons: Little Blue, Great Blue, Tri-colored, Reddish, Snowy and Great Egrets – and most were in their colorful breeding plumage. A few Marbled Godwits are still hanging around and there were good views of the Roseate Spoonbills and Black Skimmers. We also saw Caspian Terns, a Forster’s and a Gull-billed Tern. A nice breeze kept us cool. We then went to San Jose and the Cocina de Rita Restaurant for lunch.

My Bird of the Week is the Indigo Bunting. Its name in Mexico is Colorín Azu. Rada captured the lovely bird in the photo on April 26 not far from a water leak near the old Ruth & Rudy’s Bakery. As much as leaks are bad, this one has created a colorful little oasis filled with wildflowers and the birds are taking full advantage of it.

The Indigo has only been recorded here twice prior and, before Rada saw it, was last seen at the Country Club pond in 2019. However, a couple of us spotted another one at the Rincón del Ensueño settlement ponds this past Saturday, the 27th. Ours was foraging with a small flock of Lazuli Buntings that we have been seeing in that area.

Indigo Buntings are described in allaboutbirds.org as “a scrap of sky with wings.” They will perch in trees singing when they are not foraging for seeds and insects in low vegetation. They migrate at night using stars for guidance. According to allaboutbirds.org, researchers proved this by studying captive birds in a planetarium.

Their beautiful blue color is not from pigment. It comes from microscopic structures in the feathers that refract and reflect light much like the airborne particles that cause the sky to look blue.

The Indigo Bunting primarily summers in the eastern United States and migrates from the northern neo-tropical region through the eastern part of Mexico to the US. There is a contingent that summers in Arizona and western New Mexico. Perhaps our birds decided to take a short cut and migrate up the Sea of Cortez coast. Who knows?

The birding group will meet this coming Thursday, May 2 at 7:30am at the Mariscos Esterito Cafe located at the end of San Carlos Bay near the fish camp and across from the Red Cross station. This is a NEW time as the sun is rising earlier and earlier.

You do not need to be an experienced birder to join our group. If you do not know anything except that you want to know more, our group will help you learn. If you are an experienced birder and just want to know other birders, then join us and share your knowledge. Please bring your water, sun and insect protection, and a chair. And your binoculars, of course. The outing will last until about 11:00am and we go out to lunch afterwards. If you have any questions, sightings to share, or comments, please feel free to contact me at maryltannehill@yahoo.com. I wish you happy birding wherever you are.
