Guaymas CINEMEX Movie Theater

Cinemex, the movie theater in Guaymas, shows movies in Spanish and oftentimes in English.

This week, Wuthering Heights, Frankenstein, and Stray Kids: The dominATE Experience are playing in English. Scream 7 will be playing in English starting on Wednesday, February 25.

San Carlos Beach & Desert Rally, February 19 – 21

On Friday, February 20 and Saturday, February 21, there will be 2 days of entertainment for all ages at the 4th annual San Carlos Beach & Desert Rally.

The fun begins at the ice breaker on Thursday, February 19 at 7:00pm at Hair of the Dog. It will be a biker atmosphere with live music.

On Friday, beachfront in the Bahia (map), the live entertainment starts at 6:00pm with Grupo Tolerado, then Rebel Sprit at 10:00pm.

On Saturday, Silencio de Blanka performs at 7:00pm, then The Dudes at 11:00pm beachfront in the Bahia.

Throughout the weekend, there will also be biker shows and exhibitions starting at 4:00pm. On Sunday, February 21 at 3:00pm, there will be a biker parade from Hammerhead’s to the San Carlos letters.

Kite Classes, February 20 – 22

From Friday, February 20 to Sunday, February 22, Kite Club San Carlos is offering an intensive 3-day Kite Class experience. Wind, sea, and three unforgettable days in a safe, beachfront setting. This is an experience for beginner to advanced riders, with IKO-certified instructors and caddies.

Real progression on the water, certified instructors, full equipment, and an experience that goes far beyond kitesurfing. Activities, food, community, and that exhaustion that comes from doing something truly worthwhile. Includes:

Ostioneros de Guaymas play basketball in the CIBACOPA league.

The CIBACOPA Basketball League starts its 2026 season on February 14.

Ostioneros de Guaymas’ home opener is against Obregon Halcones on Friday, February 20, at Gimnasio Municipal Guaymas at 8:15pm (map).

Rescate Marketplace, February 21

Every Saturday, browse the goodies for sale at the Rescate-sponsored Marketplace in the parking lot next to the Thrift Store from 9:00am – 1:00pm.

Many vendors will be selling their wares at the Marketplace, including baked goods, fresh fruit and vegetables and handcrafted items.

There will be live music to entertain as you shop.

Prime Rib Dinner, February 21

For those lucky enough to purchase tickets early, enjoy Club Deportivo’s sold out Prime Rib Dinner on Saturday, February 21.

Enjoy Prime Rib, mashed potatoes, gravy, corn, dinner roll, super salad bar, and strawberry shortcake for dessert.

Doors open at 4:30pm and dinner is served around 5:30pm. Come early and enjoy our delicious margaritas and other reasonably priced drinks.

Walk / Run to End Domestic Violence, February 22

The 6th annual 5K & 10 K run & walk “to End Domestic Violence” is on Sunday, February 22. The event starts at 9:00am at Seascape Plaza.

The cost is 300 pesos until February 21 and 350 pesos the day of the event. You can register at the Athleticlub San Carlos, RE/MAX First Choice Realty, Rescate Market and International Computer Solutions. The first 250 people to register will receive a dry fit t-shirt.

Registration and package pick-up is on Saturday, February 21 at Seascape Plaza from 9:00am – noon and 3:00pm – 6:00pm. You can also register on the day of the event between 7:00am – 8:00am.

Meet the Artist Wine Party, February 22

On Sunday, February 22, Tanta Vida Perros of San Carlos is hosting a fundraiser at Colibrí restaurant & Bar.

Art Classes, February 23

Club Deportivo is offering 2 new art classes.

Clay & Play on Monday, February 23 from noon to 3:00pm and a Watercolor Class on Tuesday, March 3 from noon to 3:00pm.

The cost is 500 pesos which includes snacks and all materials. All proceeds will be donated to local charities.

Free Country Line Dance, February 24

Join in every Tuesday at La Palapa Griega for Country Line Dance lessons.

These are Beginner Level, so come and try it out. No experience needed and all are welcome.

The class is free and will take place from 3:00pm – 4:30pm.

The instructor, Carrie Olejnik, creates a warm, welcoming atmosphere that makes every class enjoyable for all ages.

SBPA Luncheon: February 25

The SBPA 2026 Luncheon event is on Wednesday, February 25. The Luncheon will be held at the beautiful location of La Posada Beach Club on the patio (the patio just to the west of El Mar Restaurant where weddings are held). We will have music, auctions, a pet runway, lunch, and a ton of fun! More information to come.

Make sure to get your ticket today. Individual tickets are available for 700 pesos which includes lunch, entertainment, a dog walk, and a wonderful time. This is a great way to meet new people while supporting a great cause as each ticket you buy helps to support approximately one surgery.

Tables are also available to host with a required minimum of 8 people to reserve a table (tables seat up to 10). White tablecloths and white napkins are included. Hosts/Hostesses are responsible for selling tickets to their guests and getting the money to us at the SBPA bookstore or directly to Debbie. The host/hostess brings the centerpiece and can bring their own colored placemats, tablecloths and napkins. Flatware and wine glasses can be provided if requested.

Wine can be ordered and paid for in advance for 250 pesos. Or guests can bring their own bottle and pay an advance corkage fee of 150 pesos.

Scottsdale Jazz Band, February 25

On Wednesday, February 25, you are invited to a performance by the Scottsdale Crossing the Border Jazz Band, considered one of the best in the USA.

They will be performing in downtown Guaymas at the Concert Hall at the Fray Ivo Toneck Conservatory of Music (near the Three Presidents Plaza).

The performance starts at 7:00pm.

Tickets are 100 pesos each and are available at the Fray Ivo Toneck Conservatory, at 24th Street and A. L. Rodriguez Avenue. The ticket office is open from 8:00am – 7:00pm, Monday to Friday.

Winter Olympics Update: North American Highlights So Far

As the Winter Olympics continue, the energy is building and standout performances are shaping the medal race. Mexico, Canada, and the United States have each delivered moments worth celebrating over the past several days.

Mexico
All eyes were on Donovan Carrillo in men’s figure skating, where he delivered a confident and expressive performance that once again showcased his artistry and technical growth. Carrillo’s routine energized the crowd and demonstrated how far Mexico’s winter sports program has come. Team USA continues to deliver headline performances across the mountain and the ice. Wine & Food Pairing, February 28

On Saturday, February 28, there will be a special event hosted at the beautiful beach-front Casa Santuario in San Carlos (see map).

Bodegas Cieli from Valle de Guadalupe will be sharing their different premium wines and these will be paired with several dishes from Colibrí restaurant.

There will be 4 distinct tastings over the course of the afternoon / evening.

Enjoy the unique flavors while enjoying different genres of music including classical and jazz, plus other surprises.

The event begins at 3:00pm.

The cost is 2200 pesos per person.

Color Fun Run, March 1

Run or walk and enjoy an explosion of color at the Color Fun Run on Sunday, March 1 at 9:00am.

This 5 KM run will start and end at Club Duo at the Marinaterra Hotel & Spa.

The entry fee is 350 pesos or 400 pesos with a CHIP. A CHIP is necessary to record the participant’s race finish time.

Registrants will receive protective glasses, colored powder, an event T-shirt, and a chip to record your time (for 50 pesos more).

All proceeds will be donated to Estoy Contigo, which helps people with cancer and their families.

Wildlife Gala Fundraiser, March 8

On Sunday, March 8, CRRIFS will be having their first Wildlife Gala Fundraiser at the San Carlos Yacht Club from 5:00pm – 8:00pm. Dinner will be the Yacht Club’s extensive Mexican buffet. A cash bar will be available, along with a silent auction, live auction and a chance at a 50/50 raffle. A wildlife presentation will be shown.

Tickets are 600 pesos each.

Wildlife attire is encouraged and if you need help with what to wear, stop by the CRRIFS Gift Shop at the marina and get some animal or bird ideas. Wildlife headbands and bandanas are now being sold to help with your outfit.

There are only a handful of tickets left. They are available at either CRRIFS Gift Shop, Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00am – 2:00pm (in the breezeway behind Barracuda Bob’s) and at CRRIFS facility every day from 10:00am – 4:00pm. The facility is located at 1118 Avenue F, in the Ranchitos. Credit card payment is accepted at both locations.

San Carlos Fishing Report

We are waiting for the Spring bite to start. The seas have been flat and the water warming. Some cooler water is still kicking up and coloring the water. It should get the bait supply going.

I don’t have many reports to go off, or at least any good ones. The bottom fishing is decent, with some grouper and cabrilla in close. A few yellowtail are being picked up, but usually just one or two.

I saw one good dolphin show posted and another rare False Killer Whale pod encountered.

The fishing should pick up in a few days after the New Moon on Tuesday.

San Carlos Birding Report

Hola Birding Enthusiasts,

We had 13 for our outing last week and decided to head to the Rincón del Ensueño settlement ponds since ducks don’t mind a cloudy day and the little flitter birds down here seem to go deep unless it is sunny. So, although we had 28 species, the highlights were the ducks: Green-winged and Blue-winged Teals, Ruddy Ducks, stunning Redheads, and Lesser Scaups in full breeding plumage. It was topped off with two Great Kiskadees and a couple of male Lazuli Buntings. Eight of us went to lunch at Las Capitanas. We had not been there in a while and it was just as excellent as always.

My Bird of the Week is the Surf Scoter. Laura Flores Sánchez captured her lovely photo of this sea duck just off San Francisco beach east of the new Costessa condominiums.

The face of the male Surf Scoter is like no other. It has a prominent nasal patch (that looks like a hole) at the base of the upper mandible surrounded by white, red, and yellow colors. Google describes this bill as “great, big, beautiful, and highly evolved.” It is incredibly strong, with a hook on the tip, and designed to help it dive for mussels and clams.

Surf Scoters are ducks that breed in the summer in the far, far, north of Canada and Alaska in the boreal forest lakes. The boreal forest is a vast, coniferous green belt across the high latitudes of Canada, Alaska, Russia, and Scandinavia. In the winter, this distinctive duck is found only along the coasts of Canada and the US and down along the coast of Baja California and the Sea of Cortez. The Surf Scoter got the surf part of its name from its preferred form of foraging in breaking waves. It is thought that the Scoter part of its name was a spelling mistake of “sooter” meaning its coloring looked like soot.

The female does all the raising of its brood. Raising is primarily guarding them as they can feed independently once they leave the nest for the water. Young Surf Scoters often switch from one brood to another. While Surf Scoters are not rare in this area, we do not see them often. But, this year there have been a number of sightings so now is your chance. Look for them on San Francisco Beach. They will be heading north soon.

The birding group will meet this coming Thursday, February 19 at 8:00am at the Mariscos Esterito Cafe located at the end of San Carlos Bay near the fish camp and across from the Red Cross station.

You do not need to be an experienced birder to join our group. If you do not know anything except that you want to know more, our group will help you learn. If you are an experienced birder and just want to know other birders, then join us and share your knowledge. Please bring your water, sun and insect protection, and a chair. And your binoculars, of course. Outings last until around 11:00am and we go out to lunch afterwards. Diving Report

As the day temperatures are warming, divers are anxious to go diving. I know I am! This past weekend a group from El Mar Diving Center included future divers doing their check out dives and some already certified divers. Saturday’s dives were local at Tres Marias (only two still standing) and Zorro Cove. The water temperature was about 66 degrees, with visibility about 25 feet. As it turned out, the better viz was local. With water temperatures still on the cool side, many of the fish and invertebrates only seen in cooler waters are still around and in good quantities. Schools of Parrotfish, Three-banded butterflyfish, Groupers and Sergeant majors were plentiful at these two sites. Lobsters and octopus were seen out and about hunting. Cortez and Reef stingrays are always found in greater numbers in cooler waters too.

Sunday’s dives were at San Pedro Nolasco, with water temperatures the same as locally, 66 degrees. But, visibility was not as good, only about 20 feet. A large school of Dolphins greeted the boat as it approached the island. And the ever-playful Sea lions did not disappoint. The sites visited were South Point and North Lighthouse.

The cooler waters at the island brought in some surprises…a large Hornshark, very rarely seen in this area. This shy shark with an almost pig-like nose can be found hiding / sleeping deep under boulders during the day. They mostly hunt at night. Another rare to the area fish is the Stripebelly or White-spotted pufferfish (pictured left). More common on the Baja side, these beautiful puffers sometime make their way to our side of the gulf.

And, a third rare sighting was a Blunthead trigger. Much larger than the Finescale triggers, these have grey and pale yellow alternating bars on their bodies and of course a blunthead. Again a fish much more common on the Baja side. Other fish seen were schools of Cardinalfish, Cortez angelfish and Yellow-tailed surgeonfish along with a variety of puffers, eels and wrasses. A Green sea turtle cruised by the divers. Octopus, lobsters and several kinds of cucumbers and sea stars were seen.

A very rare nudibranch for this area was seen, Tylodina fungina or Mushroom sidegill (pictured right). Nudibranchs are a type of mollusk, but most have lost their hard shells over time. This is one that has not. It is often mistaken for a limpet because of the shape of its shell on top of its body. And again, this species is more common on the Baja side. The divers got to experience a little Baja diving much closer to home on their island dives this past weekend.

Clean Up San Carlos, February 21

Clean Up San Carlos! is a group of local volunteers who work together to beautify our surroundings.

This Saturday, February 21, the whole community is invited to help.

Volunteering is easy! Just meet a the designated spot and we give you bags, gloves and trash grabbers. It usually takes about an hour but you can come for any amount of time. It’s a great way to start the weekend!

We will meet at 8:00am on the main blvd near the entrance to El Rancho del Desierto – Astrid’s Ranch (see red Pin on map). This is on the way to the Soggy Peso / Algodones beach.

Join us, outside, and help keep San Carlos beautiful! Everybody is welcome.

** Bags and gloves and safety vests will be provided. Don’t forget to bring your drinking water.
** We have a few Grabbers on hand, but please bring your own if you have one.

San Carlos’ One and Only Sailboat Cruise

Introducing San Carlos Sailboat Cruises.

This beautiful Leopard 45 sailing catamaran offers 2 cruises a day: 11:00am – 2:00pm and a Sunset Cruise from 4:00pm – 7:00pm.

Beer, wine, coke and water are included along with light snacks. You are also welcome to bring your own.

We depart from L dock at Marina San Carlos.

We are available for private charters and special events too.

We comfortably accommodate up to 20 people with seating in both the front and back or enjoy the net for sunbathing. We are equipped with a restroom, life jackets and a bilingual staff.

Fishing & Cruising with No Le Hace

The boat No Le Hace is a comfortable, 53 foot yacht is air-conditioned and has a restroom. It leaves from the Iguana Dock (right in front of Marvida Taproom & Kitchen) at Marina San Carlos.

There’s enough room for 30 passengers so come with your family and friends to explore the Sea of Cortez and experience the beautiful San Carlos shoreline, playful dolphins, and the best sunsets in the world. We are also set up for your next fishing trip. Ask us for details.

Kite Club

Live the adventure at the Kite Club, where you will find water activities for the whole family. What a great way for you to connect with the Sea of Cortez, considered the world’s aquarium.

Located on the beautiful soft sands of the popular Algodones beach, Kite Club’s activity center has something for everyone!

We can teach you how to Flyboard, Kitesurf, or Wakeboard, or just rent out equipment to you. At Kite Club we also rent out Jet Skis, single and double kayaks, and paddleboards. And we also offer boat rides. So now is THE time to get in and on the water! And while you are here, enjoy some delicious food and drinks from our Snack Bar. We are waiting to serve you today! Or just come and check out the kiteboarding show while sipping on a refreshing cocktail and enjoying our music at the beach.

Specials: With a minimum consumption of 650 pesos, your 100 pesos entrance fee will be reimbursed by the restaurant.

Over the course of the year, we have lots of additional activities such as our bonfire nights and boarding competitions. Explore the freedom of the wind and the sea at Kite Club! Or just come and hang out with some friends and watch the spectacular kiteboarding show on any given windy afternoon. We are San Carlos’ Premier Scuba Diving Center, providing Adventure since 1988. We offer certification courses (Open Water; Advanced; Diver Specialties such as navigation, underwater digi-photo, night, deep, and wreck diving) representing SSI and PADI Training.

Already certified? Then come to El Mar to rent or fill your tanks or service your equipment. Come in to purchase a mask and other merchandise. We also offer a snorkeling course.
