Christmas Bonuses are Due by December 20

Under Mexican law, all employees (including maids, gardeners, cooks) deserve a Christmas bonus (it is called an Aguinaldo). It also creates and keeps a good, healthy relationship with your employees.

Christmas Bonuses are due by December 20, 2025, according to the Ley Federal del Trabajo, Articulo 87. The law states that the minimum bonus must be the equivalent of 15 days of base daily salary.

For part time employees, the equation is: (number of days worked in the year / 365) x 15 x daily salary.

So, for example, a gardener who works 1 day per week and earns 200 pesos, would be entitled to (52 / 365) x 15 x 200 = 428 pesos. To simplify, if you have a worker who works 1 time per week and has worked for you all year, use a multiplier of 2.14 times the salary (using the previous example, 2.14 x 200 = 428 pesos).

Fishing & Birding Reports

San Carlos Fishing Report

The fish were biting for the quarter moon over Thanksgiving. The week started slow, but finished with a bang. The best action for big yellowtail was off La Manga early. The bite progressed to a little after sunrise Tuesday. They aren’t easy, but most boats caught fish.

There were some large corvina caught in the Bahia. The bait was thick in places along the shore, where any predators were stuffed. I didn’t hear of any offshore reports, but the fish should still be there. A few bonita were around, as well as some good Sierra. Temps held all week just above 70 F and the seas were favorable.

San Carlos Birding Report

Hola Birding Enthusiasts,

We had 13 for our Thanksgiving Day outing and headed to the El Palmar settlement ponds on the west side of San Carlos. 32 species were noted but not everyone saw all 32. Highlights were views of the secretive Sora rail and a non-stop whiner Least Grebe chick begging for food from its accompanying parent. Some people saw the Lazuli Buntings and a few were able to see the MacGillivray’s Warbler. Those that walked up the old access road (we have to go in from the back now) heard/and or saw two Gray Vireos. They also observed a wandering Tarantula. Since it was Thanksgiving Day, we didn’t go out to lunch.

My Bird of the Week is the Broad-billed Hummingbird. Its Spanish name in Mexico is Colibrí Pico Ancho Norteño. The photo was taken by Laura Flores Sánchez at the airport. This is the bird I see most often at my feeder. Range maps in various books and internet sites do not show the Broad-billed in our area. However, as any of you with feeders know, this little hummer is a regular. Ebird.org reports confirm also that the Broad-billed Hummingbird is a year-round resident. This is just one of those cases where the range maps have not caught up to current reality. Birds move. Even though the Broad-billed is primarily a Mexican bird, some do migrate each year to southeastern Arizona, southwestern New Mexico and occasionally to southwest Texas.

The male of this species is like a jewel with his metallic dark green body and brilliant blue throat. The bill of both sexes is slightly curved and bright red with a black tip. Our other year-round hummingbird resident, the Costa’s, has an all black bill.

Hummingbirds usually have two clutches or broods (groups of babies born at the same time.) One in late spring and another from early July to mid-August. The female will build multiple nests during breeding season but only lay eggs for two clutches. Breeding coincides with peak nectar times. Besides being the nest builder, the female is also the incubator of the eggs. During the period after the brood hatches, the female feeds almost exclusively on insects. This is to ensure sufficient protein for the hatchlings.

If you put out hummingbird feeders when you are in San Carlos, you may find that during certain periods you have fewer hummingbirds visiting. The reason is that while high nectar plants are blooming, hummingbirds will gorge on these “natural foods” instead of at your feeder. Speaking of feeders, please remember that not only is it not necessary to add red food coloring, the chemicals in food dye are bad for the birds. A bright feeder and your regular mix of one part sugar to four parts water is all you need.

The birding group will meet this coming Thursday, December 4 at 8:00am at the Mariscos Esterito Cafe located at the end of San Carlos Bay near the fish camp and across from the Red Cross station. You do not need to be an experienced birder to join our group. If you do not know anything except that you want to know more, our group will help you learn. If you are an experienced birder and just want to know other birders, then join us and share your knowledge. Please bring your water, sun and insect protection, and a chair. And your binoculars, of course. Outings last until around 11:00am and we go out to lunch afterwards. If you have any questions, sightings to share, or comments, please feel free to contact me at maryltannehill@yahoo.com. I wish you happy birding wherever you are.

We have turtle and ocean style merchandise for sale that make great gifts. It’s a great place to stop by and learn about CRRIFS turtle program and the Wildlife Rescue Center.

If you can’t make it to the sale, you can visit our gift shop located behind Barracuda Bob’s at the Marina. We share the space with SBPA bookstore. We have recently received new merchandise. A lot of items are created by our treasured artists who donate their unique pieces. Stop by and see our new pottery collection by Trenton, new necklaces by Shar and large assortment of notecards, with designs by Kimmer and Judith Moore. We have new quilting by Lindsay and new artwork by Jana Latham.

We have an adult book about our own Sea of Cortez called “A Sea Full of Turtles” by Bill Streever, along with our bilingual children’s book titled “A Turtle Tale” by local author Maria Judy Greenhalgh. Maria has written a new bilingual book, “Chiquita’s Big Day” about our turtles. It is available on a Kickstarter platform where books can be donated to CRRIFS. Her first book is our best book seller. Check it out at: Chiquita’s Big Day!

If you are looking for a one-of-a-kind gift for the person who has everything, consider purchasing a ceramic turtle tile with your / their name(s) on it. It will be adorned on our Tortuga Wall at our center in the Ranchitos. They are only $100 USD or 2,000 pesos. This makes a great gift while helping the turtles. We are taking orders at both the Rescate sale and the gift shop.
