Cruisers Seminar: Marine Solar Power, March 4

The cruisers of San Carlos are offering free seminars on the first Wednesday of each month. The Yacht Club graciously hosts these events, offering a great venue and bar service.

Open to everyone – boaters, RVers or just curious people. It’s a great opportunity to check out the club and meet members

The Wednesday, March 4 seminar is on Marine Solar Power Systems, beginner level. The seminar will present information to help you make good decisions about using solar power for your boat, RV or off-grid living. A quick overview of available equipment, terms, proper installation and a review of the most common issues and techniques to improve your system. Real life examples and experiments will be discussed. Presented by Greg Yellenik, ABYC Certified Electrical and Systems Advisor, educator, boat owner and refitter.

Doors open at 4:30pm and the seminar is from 5:30pm to 7:00pm. There will be a 60 minute Q & A afterwards.

Open House Event, March 6

Kilometer of Support, ongoing to March 6

Adelante Mujeres from Castaway Kids invites you to take part in the fourth edition of the Kilometer of Support, an event in commemoration of International Women’s Day. We are collecting items to support women / mothers and their children in vulnerable situations in San Carlos and Guaymas.

The Grand Finale is on Friday, March 6 from 8:00am – 2:00pm at the Castaway Kids Community Center. That day, we will be counting donations, and you can also bring your contribution then.

Last year, thanks to the support of our generous community, several women and their families in vulnerable situations received food and essential items. We are now receiving donations at our drop-off locations. Once again, join us in the Kilometer of Support. Our goal is 1 Kilometer of Support.

Rescate Grand Bazaar, March 7

The annual Rescate Grand Bazaar will be held on Saturday, March 7 from 9:00am to 2:00pm in the Town Square by the Catholic Church (the Rescate Marketplace is cancelled today).

It will feature numerous vendors selling good such as beautiful jewelry, arts, gifts and local crafts. You can also buy delicious baked goods, and food by local vendors.

Come enjoy a stroll, browse the Market Place, listen to live music and have a bite to eat and a drink. There will also be live music and a raffle. All proceeds benefit Rescate Emergency Medical Services.

Imitafest Battle of the Stars, March 7

On Saturday, March 7, enjoy an evening of dance at Imitafest Battle of the Stars.

The event starts at 5:30pm in the Guaymas Auditorium (map).

Imitafest celebrates the art of imitation, featuring performances by talented individuals who showcase their skills in imitating famous artists and choreographies.

Tickets cost 150 pesos at the door and 100 pesos pre-sale.

Vino Fest, March 7

Marinaterra Hotel & Spa is hosting the 8th annual VinoFest Wine Festival on Saturday, March 7 at Club Duo (map).

VinoFest is an unforgettable experience that combines wine, food and music all in one place. There will be regional and international wines and several restaurants will be offering food for sale.

There will be entertainment throughout the festival. Headlining the event is popular Mexican singer Emmanuel.

Wildlife Gala Fundraiser, March 8

On Sunday, March 8, CRRIFS will be having their first Wildlife Gala Fundraiser at the San Carlos Yacht Club from 5:00pm – 8:00pm. Dinner will be the Yacht Club’s extensive Mexican buffet. A cash bar will be available, along with a silent auction, live auction and a chance at a 50/50 raffle. A wildlife presentation will be shown.

Tickets are SOLD OUT.

Wildlife attire is encouraged and if you need help with what to wear, stop by the CRRIFS Gift Shop at the marina and get some animal or bird ideas. Wildlife headbands and bandanas are now being sold to help with your outfit.

San Carlos Follies, March 8 – 12

The scheduled shows on March 9, 10, 11 & 12 for the San Carlos Follies are sold out. No tickets remain…nada, nada!

We have added a 5th show on Sunday, March 8! So, you can still get tickets to enjoy the Glamour! Glitter! Glitz! And Giggles! of the 3rd Annual San Carlos Follies, “That’s Entertainment!”

This will be a full show, complete with bar, concessions, 50/50, programs, and everything to make for a terrific evening of entertainment. Tickets are available at El Mar.

The show will be held at La Posada, in the El Mar Restaurant theater.
Doors open at 5:45pm and show time is 6:30pm. All seating is general admission on a first come first served basis.

Tickets for this show are 400 pesos. All ticket sales benefit the SBPA. Get your tickets before this extra special show sells out.

Clay & Play, March 10

Club Deportivo is offering another Clay & Play class on Tuesday, March 10 from noon to 3:00pm.

The cost is 500 pesos which includes clay, paint, firing, coaching and snacks. All proceeds will be donated to the Casa Franciscana soup kitchen.

Guest Speaker: Buck Wilson, March 10

Come join your friends at the San Carlos Yacht Club on Tuesday, March 10 for a presentation by Buck Wilson. Buck will be talking about the rich history and amazing varieties of Mezcal with sample tastings to enhance the experience.

The presentation starts around 6:30pm, but come early to meet friends, and enjoy drinks & dinner. We’ll be serving Lasagna with salad and bread. The Club & Bar open at 4:30pm, and the kitchen begins serving around 5:30pm. Rotary Carne Asada, March 14

On Saturday, March 14 from 11:00am to 3:00pm, the Ranchitos School PTA and the San Carlos Rotary Club will host the 34th annual Carne Asada Fiesta.

This event will be held at the Ranchitos Primary School (turn off Tetakawi Blvd at Coralitos, go past Athleticlub San Carlos and follow the signs).

There will be special musical and dance presentations in beautiful costumes including folklorico dancing and mariachi music.

An authentic Mexican carne asada meal will be prepared and served by the parents of the children who attend this school. The bar opens at 11:00am and that includes the famous San Carlos Rotary Margaritas and Bloody Mary’s along with other refreshments.

Don’t miss out on this special event! Come for the food (Carne Asada), entertainment, drinks and fun. It’s the cutest show in town. The food is tasty and plentiful and there is excellent entertainment. But the show stoppers are always the brightly costumed students from the Ranchitos school who perform several traditional dances.

The cost is 500 pesos per person. Purchase your tickets at the Rescate Marketplace, in front of Santa Rosa, at Coldwell Banker and Mondays at the Athleticlub. Everyone is welcome. All proceeds support school improvements at the Ranchitos Primary and Kindergarten school.

St. Patrick’s Dinner at Club Deportivo, March 17

On Tuesday, March 17, Club Deportivo will celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with our famous corned beef dinner, including cabbage, potatoes, carrots, dinner roll, super salad bar, and dessert.

Doors open at 4:30pm and dinner is served at 5:30pm. Come early and enjoy one of the best margaritas in town.

There will be live music by Joe Fritz.

SBPA Tianguis, March 22 – accepting donations

The SPBA Annual Tianguis will be held on Sunday, March 22 from 9:00am – 3:00pm (no early birds please) at Club Deportivo.

You will find all kinds of fun stuff to purchase while you shop for a cause. There will be sports equipment, kitchen items, household stuff, furniture, and more.

Do you have some items you have been wanting to get rid of? SBPA will be accepting donations on Friday, March 20 and Saturday, March 21 from 8:00am – 3:00pm. SBPA is not accepting clothes donations.

Castaway Kids’ Beach Party, March 22

San Carlos Fishing Report

It is feeling very Spring-like in San Carlos. I am sure that a few marlin are rolling around in the mist. We had 4 – 5 days of seeing the fog rolling in and out, which I have never seen, much like the record breaking temperatures. The wind has mainly only kicked up a bit around the fog, but it is ready to blow most afternoons.

Water temps have been from the low 60’s on the colder inshore water, to 70+ offshore. Currents were strong around the full moon, with the water seemingly turning-over and even some natural red tides forming. The seaweed was out and about in various forms and varied jellyfish blooms were prolific. Although the fish had fairly empty stomachs, there were many indications that there was plenty of bait around. I think I even saw a ballyhoo.

The yellowtail bite was good around the Island all week, even though it could go from red hot to cold within minutes. Many fish were in the 15 – 20 pound range, with just a few outliers. The biggest that I heard of was 27 pounds, with just a few in-between. Lures and jigs worked when they were biting, and some bit the topwater at times.

Not a lot of reports came in from along the coast, but that can change. I saw a few good fish just outside on Monday, but they seemed to be casually chasing small bait and were not interested in the lures. They were on a different schedule than the fish at the Island that day. Maybe like the dolphin and seals frolicking off the backside of the Island in the fog that we found, the fish are going through their pre-spawn routines around the moon, tides, and bait cycles and have their moods. Coordinate all that in along with the weather, keeping your boat working, or some news hysteria, and then hope that the giant squid don’t show up … which they just did.

San Carlos Birding Report

Hola Birding Enthusiasts,

We had 23 for our outing last week and due to the large number and the high temperatures predicted, we went to El Rincón del Ensueño. The two settlement ponds there have plenty of shade and room for a large group to spread out. This has been a very “ducky” place this season and we saw Blue and Green-winged Teals, Redheads, Lesser Scaup and a Ruddy Duck pair. There were 11 Least Grebes including a pair on a nest and 4 American Coots.

Around the ponds we saw two bright yellow Great Kiskadees, Spotted Sandpipers and Black-crowned Night Herons. The surprise of the day was when an Osprey twice dove down to the water, appearing to be after a fish. Since these are sewage ponds, that would be highly unlikely but when a Brown Pelican landed right after, we had to think that something was in the water catching their attention. It’s a mystery we were unable to solve. We ended the outing with 30 species and went to Palapa Griega for lunch.

My Bird of the Week is the Ash-throated Flycatcher. Its name in Mexico is Papamoscas Garganta Ceniza. I love flycatchers because they are sitters (as opposed to flitters) and give ample time for taking a photo. They perch to watch for flying insects – their heads moving from side to side and up and down perusing the sky for the perfect bug – and then darting out quickly to nab it, returning to the same perch or one nearby to begin the process again.

Allaboutbirds.org is a good online site to look up information on birds. They also have some writers that are quite poetic in their descriptions. One of them described the Ash-throated: With its pale lemon belly and cinnamon tail, the Ash-throated Flycatcher is reminiscent of a desert just before sunset. Its subtle hues help it blend into its surroundings, but notes sputter out of its mouth all morning long, giving away its location.  

The Ash-throated is a full time resident of San Carlos and the Sonoran Desert. Other populations are found in the western parts of the US but only in the summer. Like other desert birds, it is tolerant to high heat and does not have to drink water because it can find sufficient liquid from the insects it eats. It is chatty with other Ash-throateds and has a distinctive rather clucky call. This season we have had to rely on that call for our bird counts because we have not been seeing a lot of them. Last year they were everywhere. The bird in the photo was spotted at the Ojo de Agua seep north of La Manga. It hung around for quite a while so I am hoping we will be seeing more of them in the future.

Ash-throateds are secondary cavity nesters. This means they take advantage of other birds’ abandoned nest holes and will also use human made nest boxes or even hollow metal fence poles. Woodpecker cavities are especially popular. This nesting adaptability has allowed them to increase their population even as their natural habitat has been destroyed by human expansion.

The birding group will meet this coming Thursday, March 5 at 8:00am at the Mariscos Esterito Cafe located at the end of San Carlos Bay near the fish camp and across from the Red Cross station.

You do not need to be an experienced birder to join our group. If you do not know anything except that you want to know more, our group will help you learn. If you are an experienced birder and just want to know other birders, then join us and share your knowledge. Please bring your water, sun and insect protection, and a chair. And your binoculars, of course. Outings last until around 11:00am and we go out to lunch afterwards. Clean Up San Carlos, March 7

Clean Up San Carlos! is a group of local volunteers who work together to beautify our surroundings.

This Saturday, March 7, the whole community is invited to help.

Volunteering is easy! Just meet a the designated spot and we give you bags, gloves and trash grabbers. It usually takes about an hour but you can come for any amount of time. It’s a great way to start the weekend!

We will meet at 8:00am on the main street Tetakawi by JJ’s Tacos (see red Pin on map).

CRRIFS: Lots of New Patients

Thank you to the community for continuing to be vigilant and calling CRRIFS when you see hurt or sick wildlife, or find a stranding on the beach.

February is usually a busy time at the Wildlife Rescue Center. Recently, we have been called out to rescue a small bird, dove, seagull, pelican and baby bunny. Unfortunately, many times when we take the patient back to our facility, he is too sick, or their injuries are too severe to help them. This was true for the pelican who had a severe eye infection and was no longer functioning.

But sometimes they surprise us, like Angelica. She was one of our ring-billed seagulls that arrived very sick and not able to stand up. After treatment and severe fluid therapy, she fully recovered and was released last weekend to an awaiting flock on San Francisco Beach.

With a staff of three Veterinarians, two Biologists, an aspiring intern studying Environmental Science, and more than sixty enthusiastic volunteers, we would love to show you around our Wildlife Rescue Center where you can meet our patients. We hoped to have everyone join us for our first Wildlife Gala on Sunday March 8 to explain all that CRRIFS does. Unfortunately, (or fortunately!), we sold out of tickets the first week. If you were fortunate to get a ticket, wildlife attire is encouraged. If you need help with something to wear, we have animal ears and bandanas for sale at the event, or this week in the Gift Shop located behind Barracuda Bob’s in the marina. There is no costume contest, just a fun evening in store.

Live the adventure at the Kite Club, where you will find water activities for the whole family. What a great way for you to connect with the Sea of Cortez, considered the world’s aquarium.

Located on the beautiful soft sands of the popular Algodones beach, Kite Club’s activity center has something for everyone!

We can teach you how to Flyboard, Kitesurf, or Wakeboard, or just rent out equipment to you. At Kite Club we also rent out Jet Skis, single and double kayaks, and paddleboards. And we also offer boat rides. So now is THE time to get in and on the water! And while you are here, enjoy some delicious food and drinks from our Snack Bar. We are waiting to serve you today! We are San Carlos’ Premier Scuba Diving Center, providing Adventure since 1988. We offer certification courses (Open Water; Advanced; Diver Specialties such as navigation, underwater digi-photo, night, deep, and wreck diving) representing SSI and PADI Training.

Already certified? Then come to El Mar to rent or fill your tanks or service your equipment. Come in to purchase a mask and other merchandise. We also offer a snorkeling course.
