Workshop: How to Read the Bible in Parallel

On the left, you see the first part of the Gospel of Mark laid out as the author intended. There are no chapters and verses, no newspaper columns, and you read horizontally and vertically. That is true for about 80% of the Bible.

I will teach you to organize and read the Bible horizontally and vertically. As a result, you will come to your own vastly different conclusions. This is NOT a workshop about how to interpret the Bible. Your faith is your business.

I am Robert North, Ph.D. I am a scripture scholar and therapist who has recently moved here. That is the cover of my book on the left. It explains the newest discoveries about how to arrange and read the Bible and other ancient texts.

To facilitate your learning, I am offering interactive three-hour workshops. They are limited to five people each, so I can tutor each person, and everyone can discover together. You will learn more than most scholars know. The content for each class is the same, so you register for a single class.

Cost: $50 USD or 850 pesos.
Workshop length: Three hours, from 2:00pm – 5:00pm.
Dates: February 16 – February 18 (Monday to Wednesday).
Location: Embarcadero Restaurant, Covered Patio, at the Marinaterra Hotel.
You will bring a pen, scissors, and tape. Other materials will be provided.

If interested, kindly send me an email telling me the day you desire (Monday – Wednesday 2/16-2/18) at: BobWNorth@Gmail.com or call at +1 951-718-9787.

I look forward to meeting you. We will have fun and discover a lot.
Robert

Workshop: Ancient Personal Growth Secrets

I am Robert North, Ph.D. I am an ancient text scholar and Counselor who has recently moved here.

Ancient humans were like us: They sought the same psychological / spiritual development secrets as us. They all suffered from worry, regret, anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress, and other emotional issues. They all asked the same life questions, like, “Who am I? How do I find my mission? And, how do I resolve the tension in my family?” The ancient wise leaders captured their insights in poems, sayings, and allegories. We find them in ancient texts such as the Old Testament, Buddha’s poems, and other manuscripts.

I discovered that their core principles for emotional and spiritual growth are more fundamentally insightful than those used by most therapists. I have spent the last 40 years unearthing them and writing about them. I want to teach their insights to you. To facilitate your learning, I am offering interactive three-hour workshops. They are limited to seven people each, so I can tutor each person, and everyone can discover together.

The content for each class is the same, so you register for a single class.

Cost: $50 USD or 850 pesos.
Workshop length: Three hours, from 2:00pm – 5:00pm.
Dates: February 19 – February 21 (Thursday – Saturday).
Location: Embarcadero Restaurant, Covered Patio, at the Marinaterra Hotel.
You will bring a pen, scissors, and tape. Other materials will be provided.

If you are interested, kindly send me an email telling me the day you desire (Thursday – Saturday) at: BobWNorth@Gmail.com or call: +1 951-718-9787. I look forward to meeting you. We will have fun and discover a lot.
Robert

Testimonial: We had the pleasure of attending Robert’s workshop last week in San Carlos. What a fantastic experience. We found the information both interesting and thought-provoking. We came away from the workshop inspired with new thoughts. Looking forward to attending more workshops in the future.

Head to Carnaval Guaymas for the biggest party in Sonora. For Carnaval, Guaymas’ beachside malecon will be transformed into a party promenade. 2026’s theme is  “La Fiesta Somos Todos”.

The week of Carnaval, February 12 – 17, will be filled with the burning of the bad humor, crowning of the Carnaval Queen and Rey Feo (Ugly King), concerts, theater, poetry readings, fireworks, parades and all night parties.

From February 14 – 17, there will be four days of colorful parades featuring decorated floats, brightly masked and elaborately costumed people, marching bands, and pulsating dance music. The parade is scheduled to start at 4:00pm each day (though it often starts much later). Thousands of onlookers, both young and old, will dance, cheer and throw confetti along the parade route, then make their way to the malecon where the party will continue with more live bands, food, drink and carnival rides.

Fishing & Birding Reports

San Carlos Fishing Report

It’s feeling like Spring in San Carlos! We had a few brief showers, but also many sunny days in the 80’s. I am sure that the bass are staging for the spawn at the lake. One marlin was spotted, and they’re basking out there somewhere. The calico and grouper fishing looks decent. The yellowtail were still off last week, but a few were found. I think that the nice weather will get them biting.

The latest report was of four yellowtail caught out in the Bay on the troll. A few were scratched out around San Antonio, with a couple kayakers getting two off Piedras Pintas. I saw my first boil off the beach in town in ten years. The pangas were getting them at the Island, but they wouldn’t touch the jig that day. One boat didn’t get them up the coast, where another jigged up fourteen. Sometimes you just have to be in the right place at the right time.

San Carlos Birding Report

Hola Birding Enthusiasts,

We had 15 for our outing last week and after some discussion decided to go to a spot along the Esterito Road. The forecast had been for sunshine but it was cloudy and cool and birds prefer their baths in the sunshine. Our beginning was auspicious: I parked my car, looked up at the tree beside me and spotted a Red-tailed Hawk. It flew off when I opened the car door but perched nearby and everyone had very good views.

It was slow pickins for the next hour but when the sun intermittently peaked through the clouds, it picked up and when the sun finally emerged more enthusiastically, the birds flew from the bushes and started to bathe and fly about. We ended the day with 31 species including Varied Buntings, a Canyon Towhee, a Black-headed Grosbeak, Lesser Goldfinches, a Gray Flycatcher and Vireo, and both a MacGilllivray’s and Wilson’s Warbler. Our outing ran late because most of the birds arrived just as we were getting ready to leave. I call this an “oh, wait” moment. Since our “oh wait” had lasted for 45 minutes, we decided to forgo lunch.

My Bird of the Week is the Gray Flycatcher. This precious little bird is a member of the notoriously difficult-to-identify genus Empidonax. Its name in Mexico is Papamoscas Bajacolita.

Like all our flycatchers, the Gray is a poser which makes it much easier to photograph. It sits on a branch and then darts out to grab an insect and often returns to the same branch or one very close for further surveying of the insect landscape. I spotted the little bird in the photo at what we call our Esterito Road watering hole. At times this spot has running water from the mountains and at other times it is no more than a puddle but the birds love it.

Birdsna.org reports that the Gray does a full molting after migrating to its winter grounds. (San Carlos is a wintering area.) This winter and early spring plumage is called “fresh basic plumage” and has a distinctly green tinge to it. This is the coloring we see almost the entire season here in San Carlos. In spring, summer, and early fall, the Gray is in “alternate plumage” and is mostly gray with its white belly. My photo was taken on February 6th and is a good example of the greenish “fresh basic plumage.”

The Gray looks a lot like the Dusky Flycatcher which migrates through our area but has a behavior characteristic that differentiates it and is easily spotted once you are looking for it: it wags its tail gently downward as it perches. This behavioral twitch is fortunate because the call of the Gray is almost identical to that of the Dusky, Least and Willow Flycatchers. Habitat for the Gray Flycatcher is sagebrush and brush and it likes to forage in low bushes but on a perch that allows clear views of insects. It winters in our area of Mexico and breeds in the western US.

The birding group will meet this coming Thursday, February 12 at 8:00am at the Mariscos Esterito Cafe located at the end of San Carlos Bay near the fish camp and across from the Red Cross station.

You do not need to be an experienced birder to join our group. If you do not know anything except that you want to know more, our group will help you learn. If you are an experienced birder and just want to know other birders, then join us and share your knowledge. Please bring your water, sun and insect protection, and a chair. And your binoculars, of course. Outings last until around 11:00am and we go out to lunch afterwards. If you have any questions, sightings to share, or comments, please feel free to contact me at maryltannehill@yahoo.com. I wish you Happy Birding wherever you are.

CRRIFS: our Slow Healing River Turtle

Coral came to us last year with a crack in her plastron, which is the underside of the shell. She is a semiaquatic river turtle, but due to her injuries, she must stay on land and is in an enclosure at The Wildlife Rescue Center.

She was run over by a car in Guaymas and was taken to a local veterinary who contacted us. We have worked on putting resin on her fracture for it to heal, but it is a long recovery. It takes over a year to heal a fracture of this magnitude.

Usually reptiles brumate in the winter, but due to her injury she must stay awake so she can heal. She likes to hide in tall grass in her area. She eats lettuce and fruit each day.

If you would like to come and look for Coral who is probably hiding in her habitat, and visit our other patients and our new aviary, please contact us for a tour. We do not charge for tours, but donations are accepted.

For these stories and more, please join us on Sunday evening March 8, as CRRIFS will have our first Wildlife Gala at the San Carlos Yacht Club. Tickets are 600 pesos each for dinner, cash bar, auctions and a wildlife presentation. Tickets are available at CRRIFS Gift Shop at the Marina (behind Barracuda Bob’s) or at the Wildlife Center. For more information, contact us by text or phone on WhatsApp at 622-152-9934.

Located in the heart of San Carlos, Sonora, Tortuga’s has become a reference point for those who appreciate fine dining, thoughtful details, and an atmosphere that feels both lively and intimate.

At Tortuga’s, the experience goes far beyond the table. From the moment you arrive, you are invited to settle in, relax, and let the night unfold. A carefully prepared menu, perfectly crafted cocktails, and live music every day create a warm and inviting setting where conversation flows easily and connection feels effortless. This is the kind of place where dinner gently turns into drinks, where laughter lingers, and where you find yourself staying longer than planned simply because it feels good to be there.

Valentine’s Day at Tortuga’s is not limited to romance alone. It is a celebration of love in all its forms — couples sharing a meaningful evening, friends honoring years of shared stories and friendship, and individuals choosing to celebrate self-love by giving themselves an experience worth savoring. Here, romance feels natural and unforced, rooted in presence, comfort, and genuine enjoyment.

To make the evening even more special, we will be serving an exclusive Valentine’s Day menu, thoughtfully designed for a night meant to be remembered. Begin your experience with a glass of wine — red or white, your choice. Then indulge in our one and only, elegant and unforgettable Lobster Bisque that tastes like heaven, with a delicious fresh-out-of-the-oven bread toast served alongside a classic French sauce Rouille provençal style. The main course features tender Beef and Shrimp bathed in a luxurious Béarnaise sauce, followed by a delicious fresh strawberry dessert with smooth vanilla cream, the perfect sweet ending to a romantic evening.

Known as the best restaurant in all of San Carlos, Tortuga’s Restaurant Bar offers a balance of exceptional flavor, welcoming service, and an atmosphere that invites you to slow down and be present. It is a place where memories are made quietly, over great food, good music, and the company that matters most.

This Valentine’s Day, choose a setting that invites you to linger, to talk a little longer, to listen to the music, and to truly enjoy the moment. Because “Love is not about how many days you’ve been together, but about the moments that make your heart stay.”
