Cinemex, the movie theater in Guaymas, shows movies in Spanish and oftentimes in English.

This week, there are NO movies listed as playing in English. Avatar: Fire and Ash; The Housemaid; The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants; Primate; Anaconda; Zootopia 2; Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 and Song Sung Blue are playing in Spanish.

Free Salsa Dance Classes at Soggy Peso, January 8

Start your New Year off with a bang by joining us this Thursday, January 8 at the Soggy Peso Bar.

We’ll once again be hosting Salsa Nights including free salsa dance classes followed by fantastic live salsa music by Guajira Son with Dany Moreno.

Classes will be led by our local Salsa maestro Fabian starting at 2:30pm (tips will be welcome). No worries if you come alone, as there will be plenty of other people to practice with.

Sip on a fresh margarita to the sounds of Guajira Son starting at 4:00pm (or perhaps during your Salsa class to loosen up your legs).

Don’t be shy, just come and have fun and salsa the evening away at Soggy Peso.

Naranjeros Baseball Playoffs, January 8

The regular season of the ARCO Mexican Pacific Baseball League is over.

Naranjeros de Hermosillo are now in the playoffs!

Naranjeros finished third and are playing Charros de Jalisco. After the first 4 games, the series is tied 2-2. The next games are Tuesday, January 6 in Jalisco and Thursday, January 8 at 7:30pm in Hermosillo and Friday, January 9, if necessary.

If you’d like to watch the games in Hermosillo, you can buy tickets online here. General ticket sales start on Wednesday, January 7. Tickets cost as little as 80 pesos for the bleachers.

Open House Event, January 9

RE/MAX First Choice Realty, Seaside Realty, Coldwell Banker and Vive Real Estate will be hosting an Open House Event in San Carlos on Friday, January 9 from 11:00am – 3:00pm.

2026 New Year Kick Off Cup, January 9 – 11

This weekend, the San Carlos Pickleball Club is hosting the 2026 New Year Kick Off Cup, a GLP team-style pickleball tournament.

You don’t need to make your own team. There will be a live draft on Friday chosen by team captains in an effort to make balanced and competitive teams from individual sign-ups. Each team will be matched to create the ultimate competition experience. Teams will include 2 men and 2 women wherever possible. If needed, teams may be adjusted to maintain fairness and integrity.

We’ll play conventional scoring for regular matches and rally scoring for dream breakers. Every player is guaranteed a minimum of 8 games (4 matches).

Registration is open now, until January 8. The cost is 650 pesos for members and 750 pesos for non-members.

Rescate Marketplace, January 10

Every Saturday, browse the goodies for sale at the Rescate-sponsored Marketplace in the parking lot next to the Thrift Store from 9:00am – 1:00pm.

Many vendors will be selling their wares at the Marketplace, including baked goods, fresh fruit and vegetables and handcrafted items.

There will be live music to entertain as you shop.

Guest Speaker Caitlyn Tanner, January 13

Come join your friends at the San Carlos Yacht Club on Tuesday, January 13 for a presentation by Caitlyn Tanner, author of “The Exercise Hack.” This will help you get motivated to start the new year with a lasting exercise habit.

The presentation starts around 6:30pm, but come early to meet friends, and enjoy drinks & dinner. We’ll be serving our salad bar. The Club & Bar open at 4:30pm, and the kitchen begins serving around 5:30pm. The cost for the salad bar is 300 pesos for club members and 350 pesos for non-members.

Club Deportivo Filet Mignon Dinner, January 17

On Saturday, January 17, Club Deportivo invites the community to enjoy an entertaining evening with a delectable Filet Mignon dinner.

For dinner, dine on filet mignon, baked potato, green beans, garlic bread, a super salad bar and dessert.

The bar opens at 4:30pm and dinner is served at 5:30pm. Come early and enjoy delicious margaritas.

There will be live music by Jack Wheeler.

When you buy a Club Deportivo dinner ticket, you are helping to support most of the local charities, because Club Deportivo donates to many of them.

Cow Plop Bingo, January 18

On Sunday, January 18, join Rotary for the Cow Plop Bingo fundraiser for the Telesecundaria (Jr High School) in the Ranchitos starting at 11:00am.

All of the net proceeds will benefit the TeleSecundaria school in the Ranchitos.

To play cow plop bingo, purchase plot tickets for 50 pesos to win one of 3 prizes. You don’t need a ticket to attend but you do need a ticket to win one of the three plop prizes.

You can purchase tickets at Santa Rosa Market, Coldwell Banker, Colibrí’s, or from any Rotarian. Last year was a complete sell out and ticket sales have started out strong this year.

Come and enjoy food, drinks, music and fun, and you will have a great time supporting the children of San Carlos. You might want to bring a chair for your own seating. This is a fun event for all ages.

The Cow Plop is on the field beside the ball diamond in the Ranchitos. There will be signs on Calle 3 (go past Athleticclub San Carlos) which will take you straight to the event.

San Carlos Fishing Report

The holiday crowds have left, but not our cloudy weather. I think we’ll start to see some more sunshine soon. We’ll see if any warmer water pushes in after the full moon. I did hear a report of one marlin caught at the Island! It has been in the low 60’s with the tides, but some bonita were still caught in close. Most of us are just hoping for the return of the hot yellowtail bite.

The seas were nice last week and a few boats found good yellowtail catches. Most boats were lucky to scratch out a fish or two. There is a decent calico bite now, when the conditions allow. Very few yellowtail were hitting the surface, but that can always change. I’m sure that good times will return soon.

San Carlos Birding Report

Hola Birding Enthusiasts,

We had 11 for our New Year’s Day outing and headed west to the natural seep Ojo de Agua. This place has been very birdy recently and when the birds are there, they are close for excellent views. It is normally a watering hole for cattle from the Ojo de Agua Ranch but, for some reason, there have been no cattle this season and the beautiful ground vegetation is thriving and attracting even more birds.

This year we have what seems to be a resident flock of Orange-crowned Warblers. They were in and out of the various trees during the whole time we were there. After bathing in the various small puddles of water, we could see the almost always hidden orange crown. Highlights were a Canyon Towhee, our first view of the season; a Black-throated Gray Warbler; a Ruby-crowned Kinglet, and a lovely pair of Northern Cardinals. We had 22 species total. Besides the birds we had a number of butterflies and the Black Witch Moth which is the largest moth in North America. The plan was to go to Doña Rosita’s restaurant in La Manga for lunch but it was closed so we ended up skipping a group lunch.

My Bird of the week is the Wilson’s Warbler. Its Spanish name in Mexico is Chipe Corona Negra. It is one of the brightest of the warblers. Its brilliant yellow body is topped off with a black patent leather looking cap and little black button eyes. The female also has the cap but it is less pronounced.

The Wilson’s Warbler is what is called a “habitat generalist.” This means they are not picky about their housing nor their food. They winter throughout Mexico, migrate through every continental state except Florida, and breed in western Oregon, Washington and throughout Canada and Alaska. We are at the northernmost edge of its wintering grounds so we see them most often as they migrate through but there are a few here all winter. In San Carlos, we spot them most often flitting through brushy shrubs and trees near wastewater treatment ponds or at the Ojo de Agua watering hole out past La Manga. However, Laura Flores Sánchez captured the bird in the photo at the Guaymas Airport.

Warblers are little and fast. They hop about gleaning insects from the foliage and branches of trees and even though brightly-colored blend in well enough to make spotting and capturing a photo a challenge. In the United States, people get what is called “Warbler’s neck” from craning to see them among the high treetops where they prefer to forage. Luckily for us, San Carlos doesn’t have a lot of tall trees so the warblers are much lower, especially the Wilson’s who, unlike most warblers, prefers to forage at lower levels. They migrate at night in small mixed flocks and then rest and forage during the day.

The birding group will meet this coming Thursday, January 8 at 8:00am at the Mariscos Esterito Cafe located at the end of San Carlos Bay near the fish camp and across from the Red Cross station. 

You do not need to be an experienced birder to join our group. If you do not know anything except that you want to know more, our group will help you learn. If you are an experienced birder and just want to know other birders, then join us and share your knowledge. Please bring your water, sun and insect protection, and a chair. And your binoculars, of course. Outings last until around 11:00 and we go out to lunch afterwards. Clean Up San Carlos, January 10

Clean Up San Carlos! is a group of local volunteers who work together to beautify our surroundings.

This Saturday, January 10, the whole community is invited to help.

Volunteering is easy! Just meet a the designated spot and we give you bags, gloves and trash grabbers. It usually takes about an hour but you can come for any amount of time. It’s a great way to start the weekend!

We will meet at 8:00am at the entrance to the Mirador Lookout (see red Pin on map). Historically this area has always been very dirty and challenging so please join us if you’re available!

Join us, outside, and help keep San Carlos beautiful! Everybody is welcome.

** Bags and gloves and safety vests will be provided. Don’t forget to bring your drinking water.
** We have a few Grabbers on hand, but please bring your own if you have one.

Monday Yoga at Loma del Mar

Joanne Hader is leading a yoga class on Mondays at 10:00am at the Loma del Mar palapa.

Classes will run Mondays starting January 5 through March 31.

It is open to everyone. The cost is 100 pesos and all the money raised goes to charity.

2026 San Carlos Follies Auditions

Glitter, Glamor and Giggles!

Here’s your chance to be a San Carlos Super Star. Dazzle your friends and be the “Toast of the Town”! We are looking for creative, fun people to join the Follies Family and become Folliespians. It’s a great way to meet new friends this winter.

This is not a scripted play or a “Talent Show”. The Follies is more Musical Comedy Theater with an emphasis on humor. We are looking for Dancers, Singers, Lip-sync acts, Celebrity Impersonators (think Elvis? Cher? etc.), Magicians, Musicians, Comedy Skits, Spoofs (Pickleball Players? Realtors? Local “News”? Game Show?) Think outside the box! We also need Emcees (Solo or Team) and of course, Chorus Line Dancers.

Not a performer but still want to help? We always need behind the scenes volunteers! Want to perform but don’t have an act? Show up, sign up, who knows where that will lead. Hope to see you there.

Thursday – the angelical versatile  sounds of Maria’s Chelo (a beautiful ensemble of songs), 6pm – 9pm.

Friday – a flamenco night awaits with the magnificent Jessy (a night under the stars with great fun and ambiance), 6pm – 9pm.

Saturday- DJ / Sax extraordinaire Daniel will mesmerize you with his ability to play (our terrace and garden are looking fabulous and the weather could not be better. There is no place in San Carlos with such a beautiful setting), 7pm – 11pm.

Sunday- the relaxed piano sounds of Robert Sheetz (a perfect way to end your weekend on a high note ), 5pm – 9pm.
