Fishing & Birding Reports
San Carlos Fishing Report
We hit the bonita good Wednesday, with a few larger models. The big Sierra were consistent all week. Thursday we caught our first couple of yellowtail in close, with a few more Saturday. Some good bites were had at dawn outside La Manga. Will marlin and Dorado join in that mix? We’ll see. Offshore still has clear warm water with marlin and still some sailfish. I didn’t hear of any big Dorado, but we found smaller ones, and they could be still keyed in on some bait balls. The good water is not far out, and the forecast is favorable after the next couple of afternoons and the typical post full moon push of the southern current. We can see summer action in November! The Island produced lots of small skipjack, bonita, and a few yellowtail. We picked up some nice snapper trolling in close. I had the smoker going all week with big Sierra, Cabrilla, corvina, and even a halibut were right off the shoreline. If you’re not fishing, you’re not catching. by Bryan Replogle, Team Margarita Sportfishing, repsilon@aol.com |
San Carlos Birding Report
Hola Birding Enthusiasts, We had 6 for our first birding excursion this past Thursday and went to the Rincón del Ensueño development settlement ponds across from the old Paradiso. It was a good place with a lot of shady areas which are needed in this hot weather. We spotted 19 species and heard several more. Highlights were a new batch of Least Grebes less than a week old and still riding on the parents’ backs and a wonderful aerial display from two Belted Kingfishers. In addition there were a number of Black-crowned Night Herons including juveniles enjoying perches above the ponds. Two Great Blue Herons also flew in. When the group started to talk about food instead of birds, I decided it was time to wrap it up and we went to the Little Cactus for a delicious late breakfast. My Bird of the Week is the Green Heron. We have a lot of heron and egret species in the San Carlos area. Most are found at Estero Soldado or along the shores of the sea. The Green Heron is the most difficult to locate of all of these. Their normal habitat is around wooded ponds, marshes, rivers, reservoirs, and estuaries. They like to stay hidden. Here we usually see them near or under vegetation on the edges of estuaries and occasionally at settlement ponds. We spotted the Green Heron in the photo at the El Palmar settlement pond on Sunday. They normally stand motionless at the water’s edge (under or in vegetation) as they hunt for fish and amphibians and typically stand on vegetation or in the mud rather than foraging in the water like our other herons do. Our heron was slowly walking the shore of the west pond and then found a perch on sticks and stayed visible for at least a half hour before disappearing into the thick foliage. You may wonder why it is called the Green Heron when it does not appear green. Birdsoftheworld.org describes it as having a glossy greenish-black cap and black wings with a greenish or bluish cast so I guess that was sufficient for the bird-naming people. In Mexico, it is called the Garcita Verde. According to Allaboutbirds.org, the Green Heron is one of the world’s few tool-using bird species. They will create fishing lures with bread crusts, insects, and even feathers. They then drop the lure on the surface of the water to attract small fish. The birding group will meet this coming Thursday, November 6 at 7:30am at the Mariscos Esterito Cafe located at the end of San Carlos Bay near the fish camp and across from the Red Cross station. You do not need to be an experienced birder to join our group. If you do not know anything except that you want to know more, our group will help you learn. If you are an experienced birder and just want to know other birders, then join us and share your knowledge. Please bring your water, sun and insect protection, and a chair. And your binoculars, of course. Outings last until around 11:00am and we go out to lunch afterwards. If you have any questions, sightings to share, or comments, please feel free to contact me at maryltannehill@yahoo.com. I wish you happy birding wherever you are. by Mary Tannehill |

CRRIFS Released 4 Rescue Patients
Charlie, our hungry pelican, was released at San Francisco beach. It took him a minute, but then he happily flew off to meet new friends. He was sick and weak when he arrived about a month ago. He healed nicely with food, water and antibiotics administered by our two veterinarians. Paquito, our adorable duck, was taken to the Country Club settlement pond to join other ducks. When we opened his door to freedom, he walked outside, looked around and decided to go back inside his crate. The American expression “the grass is always greener on the other side” didn’t hold true, as he didn’t want to leave. After coaxing him for an hour, he was taken back to the Rescue Center. This is the only home he has ever known, as he was rescued at two days old without any ducks around. Now that he is back at the Center, he is given more freedom to fly around. We hope he will want to leave us sometime soon. We do have a few new patients, including a kingfisher recovering from a fractured wing. If you would like to tour the Wildlife Rescue Center to meet Paquito, our two Red Tail Hawks and about 15 other patients, please call or text on WhatsApp at 622-152-9934 to set up a tour. We do not charge for tours, but donations are encouraged. |

The full moon came in and turned on the bite and bait. The shorelines were packed with layers of bait moving in. I snorkeled past the bait and stingrays to see an amazing amount of fish. Throw small lures if you want to get good action, or wait for a big bite. There are mostly small anchovies and sardines, but ballyhoo and herring were starting to mix in. It’s tough when they have easy pickings.
