Fishing, Birding & Diving Reports

San Carlos Fishing Report

San Carlos Fishing Report, November 12, 2025The fishing stayed pretty good after the full moon. Most of the bait is small, or at least from what we found in the hungry fish. There were some big bonita, but the big ones are thinning out. A few good yellowtail were caught, but I didn’t hear of anyone catching too many. The Sierra were in close in all sizes, but not too thick. The water is still warm with plentiful bait around, so the action could still just be starting up.

I didn’t hear any offshore reports, but we will be trying tomorrow. The water is clear and topping 80 degrees, so there is no reason that good concentrations of pelagics are not still around. A few Dorado were being caught trolling in close finally. We had an incredible surprise bringing up a 30 pound yellowfin tuna only two miles out in 300 feet of water.

The shorelines were choked with bait all week. I had to snorkel through darkness for 10 – 15 yards at times, skimming over numerous stingrays. Snapper were swimming in massive schools. I saw corvina, pompano, tropical damsels, and much more. Yellowtail swam by me in 2 feet of water while I battled a skipjack two hundred yards out on my fly rod. There are lots of options at the moment!

San Carlos Birding Report

San Carlos Birding Report, November 12, 2025Hola Birding Enthusiasts,

We had 8 birders this past week and we went to the Rincón del Ensueño settlement ponds across from the old Paradiso. It has sufficient shade for everyone and those adorable baby Least Grebes that we enjoyed last week. Many of our birders return north in the early spring and miss the breeding season so it is very special that those birders now have a chance to see the adorable little striped chicks. I suspect the late rains provided food which encouraged breeding.

We had 21 species including 5 Redhead ducks and 10 Blue-winged Teals. The biggest thrill was when a Green Heron flew in and gave us all good views. We sometimes go a whole season without seeing a Green Heron and so far this season I have seen 3 at 3 different locations; but, most of the group had not seen the other sightings so this one was special. When the temperatures heated up and the shade started to disappear, we went to El Mar for breakfast.

My Bird of the Week is the Red-naped Sapsucker. A friend spotted this species of woodpecker while we were scouting areas to enter the east side of the Miramar estuary. While the Red-naped summers in middle America, it winters in much of Mexico. However, there have only been 5 recorded sightings in the Guaymas / San Carlos area over the years and all were between October and December. I suspect it does not winter here but passes through to wintering grounds further south.

Sapsuckers are a very interesting woodpecker. They like the sugary sap found in some trees and drill neat little rows of holes in Aspen, Birch and Willow trees in order to sip (not suck)  the delicious sugar. The holes are pecked through the bark and into the next level of tissue to create little wells of sap. They require a great deal of maintenance so the Sapsuckers defend them fiercely from other sapsuckers as well as other species. One of those other species is the Rufous Hummingbird which will build its nests near sap wells, follow Sapsuckers in their rounds of maintenance, and even time its migration to coincide with Sapsuckers so they can feed off their sap wells. If you are worried about the poor trees with all those holes, be reassured. Research has shown that most trees survive easily.

The birding group will meet this coming Thursday, November 13 at 7:30am at the Mariscos Esterito Cafe located at the end of San Carlos Bay near the fish camp and across from the Red Cross station. You do not need to be an experienced birder to join our group. If you do not know anything except that you want to know more, our group will help you learn. If you are an experienced birder and just want to know other birders, then join us and share your knowledge. Please bring your water, sun and insect protection, and a chair. And your binoculars, of course. Outings last until around 11:00am and we go out to lunch afterwards. If you have any questions, sightings to share, or comments, please feel free to contact me at maryltannehill@yahoo.com. I wish you happy birding wherever you are.

Diving Report

San Carlos Diving Report, November 12, 2025San Carlos Diving Report, November 12, 2025
Two more days of diving in the books for this autumn season. The local dives were at Catalina Island, in front of Martini Cove, and the east side of San Nicholas Island, just outside the marina entrance to the left. Both dives had an abundance of marine life. Large schools of Grunts, Chameleon wrasses, and juvenile Parrotfish were some seen. The down side of these dives was 76 degree water and very low visibility. All of that life needs something to eat and this time of the year brings nutrient cold water up from the deep to feed the masses.

Sunday’s dives were at San Pedro Nolasco, Casacadita and Lighthouse North. And, the difference was dramatic. I had been comfortable in my 5 mm with hooded vest on Saturday, but the island water temperature was 82 degrees and visibility was 50′ – 60’+. Again, there were large schools of fish. Leopard grouper and Giant hawkfish were preying on schools of hundreds of Scissortail damselfish. Groups of Wounded wrasse and Blue-bronze chubs were sweeping across the rocks picking at any tidbit they could find.

The swim through at Lighthouse North had a large free swimming Green moray eel and a Bumphead damselfish (pictured left) in the dark corner. This damselfish differs from the Giant damselfish (pictured right) with its bright blue eye and missing white edged flowing fins. It is not commonly seen in the San Carlos area. The entrance of the swim through has been covered in Orange-cup coral on past visits, but there were many broken pieces…maybe from summer storms.

Even though the night air temperatures are going down, it seems the water might be holding its warmth a little longer this year. Grab a wetsuit and book a trip. El Mar Diving Center runs dive trips most weekends so stop by their shop to get the details and book a trip.

CRRIFS: Last Chance to Adopt a Nest

CRRIFS Adopt a Turtle NestCRRIFS volunteers are no longer walking the beaches each morning, as it is the end of the nesting season. So please, if you are walking on the beach and see baby turtles struggling to get to the water, contact CRRIFS immediately so our volunteers can come and assist these babies. This is also true for the rare experience of witnessing a turtle laying her eggs on the beach, or if you see large turtle tracks.

Last week while we were releasing babies by Marina Real, the security guard called us over and showed us some tracks. Sure enough, there was a nest there. This is probably the last nest of the season with a pre-Christmas hatching date.

If a nest wasn’t located last month and it developed naturally on the beach, now is when the babies will be hatching on their own. If there are ATV tracks or bright white lights at night, this will confuse the babies who will be disoriented or not able to cross the tracks. It is important not to ride ATV’s, make fires, or shine white lights on the beach at night (red light is best) during turtle hatching season which is August to December.

We have less than 30 nests remaining in our Incubation Center. Almost all are adopted, so if you are interested in being a part of this magical experience of releasing baby turtles, call our Nest Hotline IMMEDIATELY. NEST ADOPTIONS is our largest fundraiser. In person adoptions start at 1500 pesos. Treat your family or workplace to this fantastic experience.

Please call or text on WhatsApp 622-172-9176 to adopt a remaining nest. The number to call to report wandering turtles or injured wildlife is 622-152-9934.

Our restaurant was made for you to socialize, drink, enjoy great food, music and entertainment.

We are located on the 2nd floor of the new Casa María Boutique Hotel. We offer indoor and outdoor seating. Join us for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Our varied menu showcases the best of Mexican cuisine with a contemporary twist. From soups, salads, and tantalizing appetizers bursting with authentic flavors to sumptuous seafood dishes crafted from the freshest local catch, glazed salmon, carousel shrimp, chicken campesina, mouthwatering cuts of beef, and much more — every bite is a celebration of taste.

Savor handcrafted cocktails and an extensive selection of fine wines that complement each dish perfectly. Let our expert mixologists surprise you with innovative concoctions or enjoy classic favorites with a modern flair. Whether you’re dining indoors surrounded by elegant décor or enjoying the al fresco experience on our terrace, every moment is magical.

Our Rooftop patio on the 3rd floor of the Casa María Boutique Hotel offers breathtaking views of the San Carlos marina, Tetakawi mountain, and captivating sunsets. Here you will find a snack menu, or you can order from the restaurant menu.
